Happy Anniversary, JD <:-)

+1  O0

I'll be playing Time of Crisis with the missus to help get myself ready for Origins.
If there's time I might try to play a PC game. Don't know which one.

Judge Dredd is a pretty epic Porn Name chicka bowwow!

Man alive, will I do any gaming this weekend?  Seriously considering buying Britannia and giving that a go.  Also, sorely missing on my ACW action, so something like Scourge of War or Second Manassass is a possibility.

Dayum..I just don't know.

Maybe just drink beer and play Poker Night at the Inventory.

Congrats JD, hope you and the missus have a wonderful weekend.

Got pbem turns to get to:

TOAW4- Nghia Lo 51, I'm the French. Reading the description looks like i'll be taking it on the chin until at least turn 9. We just started.

SCGC- I'm the Allies, Poland fell in two turns, its the quiet time right now, March 1940. He's either hiding it well or not going to attack France. I smell some alternate history attempt going here, strange Japanese troop movements near the Russian border.

OOB- Skirmish, i'm the Japanese. I'm currently counter attacking after a push by the Americans.

Twilight Struggle- First game, not sure what im doing. I'm the US and just picked my card for the first headline phase. i'll take any tips I can get.

Not sure what else besides the pbem turns, maybe some more Deathwing been enjoying that, up to chapter 5.

Is TOAW any better than the previous versions? Is it worth buying?

Better to play as the Soviets when you're learning.  The game favours them a bit in the early war stages.

1)  The early war scoring cards are Europe, Middle East, and Asia so concentrate on building influence in those regions.  Coup the crap out of places and get that DEFCON down to 2.  It prevents the other guy from launching coups by locking down regions and it gets you your required military ops each turn.

2)  Read the text on the cards.  Lots of high value cards that potentially benefit your opponent have preconditions.  If they haven't been met, you can play them safely early on in the game.

3)  Don't put a lot of influence into France or Italy during the opening setup.  Italy is easy to coup and the DeGaulle and Suez cards screw the US player over royally if they dump a lot of influence in France.

For me I feel it is. I like the new UI better and the help with how many rounds your using when planning battles helps me maximize my rounds that part has always been a bit frustrating to me.Haven't really tested the navel part which is supposed to be greatly expanded. I always like the idea of TOAW, and have bought every version but have always had trouble "getting it" . If you played a lot of TOAW3 not sure there would be a massive difference, except the navel and the way battle rounds are handled and the supply changes. It does have a nice range of scenarios, I downloaded those 600 scenarios from that TOAW website, who's name escapes me right now. The scenarios I've opened and converted in the TOAW4 editor have worked so far. The small thing that bugs the crap out of me is the pbem playback window, its in the middle and your not able to move it so a lot of the unit movement on the map is obscured. I guess for me i just find it easier to play and understand whats going on. I have had some map artifacting when scrolling and graphic trails and other graphic oddities but nothing major but YMMV. To this point I've only completed 4 scenarios, one pbem game. I expect to play this more than I have the other versions.

HAHAHA.....France and Italy is where i placed my influence, along with W Germany, think i dropped one in Israel also. When to play the bad cards in your hand will i think be hard for me to grasp. Can't say i have a handle on any of the mechanics yet, hopefully experience is a good teacher. Either way as long as its fun for both of us, i'm good to go.

Well I managed to get some Witcher 3 in so yay me.

Also one of these days I'll figure out how to make a rack of ribs (or 4) in the timeframe I am looking for.
Insert witty comment here.

I'm going to my first ASL tournament this weekend.  They have kindly accommodated starter kit play, so hopefully I can play against another newbie.  This will be my first time playing face-to-face, and my first tournament, so I don't know what to expect.  I know the rules fairly well, but in ASL it seems that there's always one DRM that I forget about.  I know even less about strategy, but hopefully I'll not embarrass myself and maybe see how the game is played.  I'm looking forward to it.

That was fun.  I am not ready to play full ASL in a tournament, so I signed up for the SK play.  I really just wanted to try playing f2f.  There was supposed to be two other SK players there.  One of them I know from work, and he had told me earlier in the week that he had a health issue and wouldn't make it, and I guess the other guy didn't show up, so I was sort of alone.  The tournament director wasn't playing, so he sat down and was kind enough to play a game with me.

I picked a scenario between Italians and Greeks that was simple with no tanks.  I had soloed it a long time ago, but I didn't remember it.  He gave me my choice of sides, so I chose the Greeks, only because the Italians had to move first, which would allow me to watch someone else make the first move.  He wound up getting some bad luck at the beginning, followed by a string of good luck.  Then towards the end, we had a small line of squads next to each other (i.e., point blank) shooting it out at a critical time in the scenario, but we both had the same luck: both sides survived the fusillade unscathed.  That's ASL, I guess.

I wound up winning the game.  Afterwards, I looked up the scenario in the database, and found that it was unbalanced, with the Greeks winning over 70 percent of the time, so I guess it was sort of expected of me.  My opponent was helpful and patient and good company, so it was a great experience.

You can't ask for more than that! :)  Glad you had a good time.  O0

I'm going to a board game convention tomorrow.  It'll be my first time attending this one.

QuoteReputation is more Euro/casual

Mission to get a wargame going failed.  There were about 140 people in attendance and the general theme/vibe was very light and casual games with a lot of families.   I did get into a game of Twilight Imperium IV.  I played the original way back in college and got my ass handed to me early on.  I think I was out or contention within an hour and a half or so which sucked because I got a ride there with someone else.  This was much the same.  7 hour game with a bunch of guys who play at least once a month.  They were all up around the 7 or 8 mark on the scoring track and scheming away to be the first to reach 10 points.  I was at 2...

It was OK but way too long for what was essentially a learning game for me.  I was getting pretty restless by the 4-5 hour mark and was just hoping it'd end.  I'd play it again but I think I prefer Star Trek Ascendancy over this one.  I think the main turn off for me with TI4 is the points salad system of scoring. Same reason I don't like Scythe.  I prefer Ascendancy's tighter focus on win conditions.
