See, I saw it as the villain not really being a villain but a person who lost something, couldn't cope and decided to lash out at the thing they though was most responsible.

That's one of the primary negatives I've been feeling on the MCU (and one of the reasons why I like the deadpool movies) is that the majority of the villains in the MCU play the "powerhungry tyrant who wants mahw pahwah to take of the earth, galaxy, solar system, NYC"

I mean even with Infinity War...what exactly is Thanos trying to accomplish???
He states that the universe is overpopulated and he's doing a service? So what....every couple hundred of years he'll thin out the gene pool?
Insert witty comment here.

Hm.

Cap1: the Red Skull does want moah powah to take over the world. He's also generally regarded as one of the best villains!

Hulk: Thunderbolt Ross is cleaning up after his embarrassing mess, and genuinely also wants to stop a dangerous menace, plus wants to recreate the super-soldier serum for the sake of American military power (and his own ego). Blonsky resents growing old and fears being too weak to be a solder anymore. The Leader wasn't quite a villain yet but was doing it FOR SCIENCE!

IM1: the Ten Rings generally are destablizing the Middle East for their own unstated agendas, but Obadiah Stane is the elder brother (equivalent) in the parable of the prodigal son, who resents Tony coming back (especially coming back penitent, especially since Stane arranged his execution) because Stane has been the one to keep the company going and believes he should have inherited everything from his hard work while Stark was out wasting money with prostitutes etc. (The plot structure of IM1 builds off at least three of Jesus' parables.)

IM2: Justin Hammer is jealous of Stark professionally and personally, and wants to have Stark's fame and acclaim. Ivan Vanko is horribly jealous of Stark's father having stolen (as he sees it) the arc reactor technology, and wants to destroy Stark for revenge of his family.

Thor: the Ice Giants live in a crapsack world and want to expand but by conquest. Loki is jealous of his brother and wants his parents and people to recognize his own superior qualities (as he sees them). Once he actually takes over as king, later, he doesn't give a hoot about the power and just amuses his own ego pointlessly while setting up ways for people to 'remember' him fondly.

Avengers: Loki again, same deal -- he's attacking Earth out of jealousy of Thor (and apparently out of fear of Thanos).

Phase One results: only one main villain plays the "powerhungry tyrant who wants more power to take over the etc."

IM3: the pseudo-Mandarin enjoys the perqs and bennies, and the acting challenge. Killian is jealous of Stark, particularly for Stark's casual cruelty years ago, and wants to corner the military industrial market with a new tech (now that Hammer and Stark are out of the business). Hansen is mainly in it FOR SCIENCE!

Thor2: Malekith does want more power to take over the universe, but from dark elves' perspective the universe has been poisoned by light and they're trying to restore their ruined realm.

Cap2: it's Hydra, so arguably just a straight world-takeover attempt.

Guardians 1: Ronan resents the peace treaty between the Kree and the Nova Corps and wants to strike back in vengeance for his dead people. He isn't trying to conquer anything.

Av2: Ultron's programming went crazy as he went sentient, partly from studying too much of humanity's awfulness (and also partly from Thanos' influence apparently), and aside from resenting being made as a slave (in effect) he wants to save humanity (apparently from Thanos!) by destroying it, kickstarting an evolutionary advance.

Ant Man: Yellowjacket is jealous of his teacher and feels like he ought to inherit from his mentor (a variation of Stane's motivation). The leftover Hydra stooges have a more prosaic motivation (power to take over the world again. There seems to be no contact with the reshuffled hydra motivations of the Shield plotline going at the time.)

Phase Two results: Hydra in Cap2 is the only villain playing the powerhungry tyrant who wants more pwoer to take over the etc., and arguably Pierce wants to take over the world to stop the kind of messes he had to deal with as an ambassador, bringing world peace.

Cap3: Baron Zemo wants revenge on the Avengers for what he sees as their lack of responsibility in acting without oversight. (A verrrrrry unZemo-ish motivation, since he's usually just after more power to take over the world as its leader!)

Doctor Strange: Dormammu already has the power to take over the universe and remake it in his image, he isn't looking for more power, just someone to open the gate for him. That's admittedly an even more-straightforward motivation of the same type (power to take over the world), but he isn't really the personal antagonist of the story. Kycilius and his fellow disciples have misunderstood the Ancient One so feel betrayed by her, thinking that she has been hogging immortality for herself alone, and that Dormammu offers everyone on Earth immortality which they're trying to achieve.

GotG2: the Sovereign queen is out to punish an insult (somewhat justifiably), and Ego wants to stop being alone (one way or another, although one of those ways involves spreading himself over multiple planets).

Thor3: Hela wants an inheritance which she believes is rightfully hers, and also wants to keep the early conquests of Asgard going again. (She kind of fits the charged stereotype.) Surtur just wants revenge on Thor's father by destroying Asgard, and maybe also wants to feel important by achieving a prophecy about himself. The Grandmaster just wants to have fun, and sees controlling a world (already) as the best way to do this -- but he also genuinely seems to want his people to prosper and enjoy themselves, too, in their crappy circumstances.

Black Panther: Killmonger wants to save the black race by using Wakandan technology to start a world war against everyone else, and is furious that the Wakandans haven't been helping anyone at all with their power (especially fellow Africans).

Infinity War: Thanos was denied an excuse to flex his murderous tendencies to save his planet, and uses his planet's subsequent self-destruction as an excuse to flex those murderous tendencies across the universe. (Yes, he probably does intend to just keep doing it over and over on an occasional basis, insanely imagining the gratitude of the universe that he was so, soooo right.)
