I had planned to host a Sails of Glory event today but didn't get quite the numbers I was hoping for so the five of us decided to switch to Wings of Glory instead.  It had been a while since I had this on the table so it was fun to push little planes around again.

The scenario saw a two P-51Ds escort a B-17F and a B-17G on their way to bomb a ball bearing factory.  The Germans scrambled two FW-190D-9s and two Bf-109Ks with Mauser 151 20mm gunpods to intercept.  In addition, the factory was protected by an 88mm flak battery.

American deployment.

Germans enter the map.  They are several thousand feet below the heavies and have to climb to altitude.  Fortunately the 109s climb like mad.

(Paint job on the new 109s kinda sucks.  The 190s look so much nicer.)

Fighters close the distance.

The 190D breaks left to engage with the Mustang while the 109K ignores the Red-Tail and goes straight at the bombers.

The 190 on the left pulls an Immelmann turn and gets a belly shot into the P-51 and takes some high angle deflection fire in return.  The 109K in the middle takes some hits from the P-51 as it passes but it doesn't appear to do any damage.

He then cuts in on the B-17F and opens up with the gun pods......which immediately jam.

Then he receives a lot of attention in the form of .50 MG fire from both bombers as he passes between them.

The 190 that pulled the Immelmann gets on the 6 of a Mustang and opens up but can't manage to knock it down.

The P-51 starts to pull away and it becomes apparent that the 190's engine was damaged in the initial pass.

The bombers press on as the fighters overshoot one another and turn to get back in position.
The B-17G takes a heavy flak hit which knocks out two of its engines.
The B-17F takes fire from the other 190 and the crewman in the nose is killed.  The other 109K takes a shot at a P-51 and also suffers a jam with its gunpods.

The heavies drop their load while taking more fire from fighters and flak.  They take a beating but somehow manage to stay up.  One of the 109Ks is shot down by fire from the tail gunner on the 17F.

The bomb drops are bit off.  They manage to damage part of the factory but fail to score a direct hit.

The 17F takes some cannon fire from the remaining 109K and loses two engines but it's too little, too late.  The bombers manage to escape while the Mustangs tie up the remaining fighters and take down the other 109K before breaking off contact.

Fun game.  Bad luck for the Luftwaffe in that both 109Ks suffered gunpod jams on their opening salvos.  All the Yank planes took massive damage but never quite enough to get a kill.

Those bombers look awesome on the maps.  O0

Thanks.  It was fun.  I'd love to be able to get a game of it played on a massive surface area so there'd be more opportunity to maneuver and also recover and get back into the fight after an overshoot.  The bombers are usually able to get across our usual table and hit their before fighters can get turned around again.

nevermore

Always wanted a go at this, you kind of inspired me

This is definitely cool; thanks for posting! I had no idea the B-17 model for the game was that big.  :o
