If this had happened just 30 days ago I could have gotten my $3,500 back for scholarship tickets.

So Alabama basketball last night had a rough night.

They were losing to #14 Minnesota, when a scuffle broke out under the basket with about 14 minutes to go.  A bunch of the Bama players leave the bench to get involved in the scuffle, and as a result, the entire bench gets ejected, leaving them with the 5 guys on the floor.

Then one fouls out

Then one gets hurt

'Bama plays the last 10 minutes and change with 3 guys on the floor and no subs.

And while down to only 3 guys, actually cut into the lead and had it down to 3 points at one point.  They outscored Minnesota 30-22 while playing short 2 guys.

Crazy...

Paragraphs like this are why I'm thrilled college hoops Mark Titus season is here again

QuoteThe soft rims of Maui are so legendary that I could easily be convinced that they're a Dean Smith Horcrux, and that North Carolina's national title hopes depend on it first making a pilgrimage to Hawaii to harness Smith's power. Hell, those rims have brought so much joy to my life that any article about Adam Morrison's 2005 Maui Invitational — 86 points in three tournament games, including 43 in the semifinals! — reads like erotic literature.

no idea - I'm in Columbia w/ Bayonet Jr's soccer team and haven't seen anything about the game.  State wasn't expected to do much this year anyway during the transition to Keats' system, and beating 'Zona a few weeks about might've been an awful thing since it raised expectations way beyond where they should be

Things are not looking good at either Moo U (NCSU or Auburn)

"NC State starting point guard Markell Johnson has been suspended indefinitely for "a violation of the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct,'' the school announced Saturday.  Johnson missed Saturday's 81-76 loss to UNC Greensboro, which picked up its first win against the Wolfpack in 11 attempts and just its third win in 62 games vs. ACC opponents."

dude - it was Wofford.
You should be able to roll out the ball and just say "go get 'em boys!" and win by 10.

Went to an Auburn's Women's game yesterday that was one of the more interesting games I've seen them play in a couple of years.  They started out just dead cold but playing good defense.  Florida was hitting their shots and Auburn fell behind in the first quarter by 20.  Then Florida started having trouble with the Auburn press and Auburn cut the lead to 10 by the end of the first period.

By half-time it was very tight with a very narrow lead.  But Florida was getting tired.  Auburn and Florida were each playing basically 7 people, but Auburn's conditioning was clearly superior - especially at forwards and Center.

By the end of the 3rd period Auburn had a less than 10 point but sustained lead.  Florida was not moving their feet on defense.

In the fourth period Auburn outscored Florida by 25 points and won by more than 30.

Auburn did not get discouraged or change their game plan when their shots did not fall.  Florida does not have the conditioning program to play 7 people against a team that presses the length of the court the entire game.

Auburn does not have the talent to be in the top quarter of the league (those teams will compete for the national title again).  But they might be able to finish in the top third of the league.  Maybe.  Still, this is the most talented squad they have had in a decade.

Go NCSU!  They beat Satan's team!  Mooooooo!

Auburn beat 2 ranked teams this week and may be ranked next week.  They are hitting their free throws, not turning the ball over and (usually) playing pretty good defense.  For being so short, they are rebounding very well.  This is all without 2 starters who have not been ruled eligible.  Strangest AU season I've ever seen in 30 years of having season tickets.

Auburn is 4-0, 16-1 and leads the SEC.  This is after their best two bigs are not eligible to play this season.

They are short and not very talented.  They are hitting their free throws, not turning the ball over, playing good defense, hustling the entire game and not giving up.  They rely on the 3-ball, which will come back to kill them from game to game.  Their performance is due to execution.   They have come from more than 10 back at halftime four times to win this year.

So far, this is the most unbelievable season I've seen in 29 years of being a season ticket holder.  It is almost like they are the anti-Auburn (free throws, and good defense).

No.  But they beat Tennessee in Knoxville and Arkansas at home.  Both were ranked.  Auburn had not won at Tennessee in around a decade.  They beat Ole Miss at home who beat Florida.  Auburn has played through a very rough part of their schedule.

I don't think Auburn can defend against twin big men playing a high-low interior passing game.  Auburn is winning through execution and forcing other teams to beat them.  They don't have much of a margin for mistakes.

Auburn will be either first or second in the SEC after the first third of the season is done with a 5-1 record.  They lost at Alabama when they shot horribly everywhere including the free throw line, but still finished close.

Today after shooting 25% in the first half and being down by as much as 16 points, they came back in the second half and won by 14 over Georgia.  Auburn shot over 90% from the free throw line, had a very positive turnover ratio, and did not get utterly destroyed on the boards.  They had some defensive lapses in the first half, but Georgia mostly shot amazingly well from long range.  Both teams reverted to their averages and Auburn won.

I came home and read the write-up and the professional sports journalists caught almost everything I did.  The only thing that the story did not emphasize was Heron being scoreless in the first half after two quick fouls coming back with a roar in the 2nd half.  Sports journalism = quality journalism (at least in the USA).

The SEC has 18 conference games for each team.  We are a third of the way through the schedule and Auburn is 5-1.

What is amazing to me after 30 years of having season tickets is Auburn hits their free throws, especially down the stretch.  Yesterday against Georgia they had a 10 point lead with 4 minutes left and started delaying.  I was pretty calm.  They hit all of their free throws during the last couple of minutes.  In previous years that almost never happened.  No lead was safe.  The foul line was a psychological terror for the fans.  It is amazing to have the team actually playing fundamentally sound ball.

NBA All-Star rosters were announced, and rather than straight conference affiliation, they had Lebron and Steph pick teams as captains.

Russell Westbrook got picked as part of Team Lebron, and apparently was pretty chuffed about being picked last for his team, until someone pointed out to him that the list was released alphabetically   :2funny:

Auburn simply crushed LSU at home.  Amazing to someone who has had season tickets for 30 years, the cheapest ticket on stubhub to the game was $75.  Auburn has surpassed their conference (7-1) and total win (19-2) totals for last year, and we are not quite halfway through the SEC regular season.  If they win their next game, they will be on top of the SEC at the midway point.

This has been an unbelievable season.  Auburn's best bigs both got 4 fouls on them with 15 minutes to go and they still cruised through the game although LSU started a 6-10 and a 6-11 players. Their next game is at Ole Miss which usually plays very tough at home.

Auburn has a 2 game lead in the SEC with 8 games left.  Tennessee is the next team in the list, and Auburn beat them at Knoxville in their only meeting.  Home stretch Auburn has to play at Florida, Kentucky, Alabama and at Arkansas.  Of course, every other team will be gunning for them since they are highly ranked and have the highest RPI in the SEC.

UNC won.

Dook lost to a game which had lost 11 straight (chuckle, snort).

Not listing AU in the power rankings makes me distrust his opinion.  His "confusion" over UNC is stupid.  UNC has two consistent scorers.  Guard even one of them well and they are about 50% likely to lose.  They are not hard to evaluate.

Yes I read it and was not impressed.  Recruiting and getting them to play as a team are usually different things.

And I don't think Mark Titus knows more about college hoops than everyone else here, or probably even everyone at my home since my wife is really knowledgeable.  Multiple things in that column are pretty inane.  UNC is not a mystery to anyone who has been watching them.

Not having AU in a top power grouping right now is nuts.  Perhaps not next week or in three weeks after they play Kentucky at home and Florida and Arkansas on the road - but right now they are playing as well as anyone outside of the top 4 in the rankings.

Auburn lost for the first time at home all season 81-80.  Amazing it was this close for a couple of reasons.
1] Texas A&M is the tallest team in the SEC.  AU's two earlier losses were to teams in the top 25 or so of starting height.
2] AUs best defender and leading scorer got hurt and set out the entire second half.

Despite getting clobbered on the boards, AU hit 21 of 24 free throws to keep it close.

Wish they had won, but it was a great game to see.

Regretfully, my wife got sick and could not go with me to the game.  I gave the student to an undergrad waiting in line for standing room only tickets instead of selling it for > $100.

yes. Plus they have a few more conf games to raise their profile.  They'll be forgiven if they lose to Louisville, but not if they lose to Syracuse or BC or Wake Forest.

That happened a few years ago at a high school game I was at.  One of the opposing teams cheerleader's didn't like a call and wouldn't let it go, so the ref let her leave early.

Unfortunately, Auburn's starting Center (only 6'7") is probably out for the rest of the year.  Their leading scorer and defender is nursing a shoulder injury.

Just one of those things.  Happens to lots of teams.  It is still disappointing.  This team has played up to their potential better than almost any college team that I've followed, including Dean Smith's teams.  I hate it for the kids since they have played with such good intensity and have improved so much.

Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game.

On the bright side, it was a beautiful day in Auburn and I saw 5 innings of the baseball opening series.  AU lead 16-0 when I left.  One of my students is a current starter.

Auburn is down to 7 scholarship players.  The injured center had surgery for a broken leg and multiple torn ligaments and will be out 6 months.  Best scorer and defender is day-to-day.  They may not win 2 of their last 4 to clinch the regular SEC season.

This is really sad for a group of kids who played together so well and maxed their potential.

More reasons to love Mark Titus

https://www.theringer.com/2018/2/16/17019206/college-basketball-power-rankings-michigan-state-texas-tech

(fwiw, Titus played on Ohio St's Final Four teams 10 years ago)
Quote11. Ohio State (22–6)
I have no idea what I did to make Penn State's Tony Carr so angry, but the man is hell-bent on ruining my life and I would greatly appreciate it if he'd show even the slightest bit of mercy. This concludes my thoughts relating to the Ohio State men's basketball team. Thank you for your time.

and

Quote8. Auburn (23–3)
I don't think it's any secret that Auburn has traditionally been bad at basketball. Ask the average college basketball fan to tell you something about the program that doesn't involve Charles Barkley, and chances are they'll just make something up ("Didn't Willis Reed play there?") and hope you don't catch it. With Auburn having won seven of its past eight games and coming to the precipice of winning an SEC regular-season title for the first time this millennium, though, I think it's worth reminding everyone just how bad the Tigers have been.

Auburn is a charter member of the SEC, which is to say it's been in the conference since the league was formed all the way back in 1932. Since then, the Tigers have won exactly two regular-season SEC titles and only one SEC tournament. That's three conference trophies in 84 seasons of basketball! By comparison, Kentucky has won four SEC trophies in the past two seasons alone. So yeah, the numbers confirm that Auburn has, in fact, been a historically lousy program.

I bring this up as a way of emphasizing that what's happening at Auburn this season is in a completely different stratosphere than virtually every other surprising story of the 2017–18 campaign (except maybe the rise of Texas Tech), such as Tony Bennett leading Virginia to a no. 1 ranking in the AP poll or those two weeks in December when America thought Arizona State was great. It completely boggles the mind how Bruce Pearl is doing this. The only other time that Auburn has been anywhere close to this good since the mid-1980s was when Chris Porter led the Tigers to an SEC title and the Sweet 16 in 1998–99. But what Pearl is accomplishing is much more impressive considering that the Porter-era Tigers were cut down by NCAA violations involving a player receiving illicit benefits. Something like that would most certainly never happen under Pearl's watch.

and later...

Quote4. Texas Tech (22–4)

I mean no disrespect to Texas Tech when I say this, but holy hell, is it going to be hilarious if the Red Raiders are the program that snaps Kansas's Big 12 regular-season title streak. Oklahoma's Trae Young seems like a lock to become the fourth national player of the year to come out of a non-Kansas Big 12 program since the streak began in 2004–05, and if projections hold true and Young and Texas's Mo Bamba are taken in the top 10 of the 2018 NBA draft, they'll become the ninth and 10th non-Kansas top-10 picks to come from the Big 12 since the streak started. In other words, there has been a TON of individual talent in the conference in the past 15 years, and all of it has come up short against the Jayhawks. So you'll have to excuse me if I think it's hysterical that Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin couldn't snap the streak, but a program so desolate that it hired Tubby Smith to be its savior five years ago can.

I mean, imagine if someone would have told you after the 2011–12 season — when Billy Gillispie coached the Red Raiders to an 8–23 record — that Kansas's streak would be snapped in 2018. Imagine if that person then asked you to name the program that would end it. Where would Texas Tech have fallen on your list? I'm not even joking when I say that I would have listed Wichita State and Creighton above the Red Raiders on the off chance that either ended up joining the Big 12.

and still...

Quote2. Virginia (24–2)
Ty Jerome is 11-of-39 (28.2 percent) from the 3-point line in Virginia's last 10 games. I used 10 games as the cutoff for my sample because if you add in the game before that — when the Cavaliers defeated Syracuse 68–61 and Jerome went 3-of-10 from deep — it weakens my point since his percentage actually goes up. That's right: A 3-of-10 outing represents an improvement over what Jerome has done lately. Meanwhile, Kyle Guy, who leads the Hoos in scoring at 15.2 points per game, has shot 25-of-78 (32.1 percent) from beyond the 3-point line in his past 10 games. I don't want to tell Tony Bennett how to coach his team, but when you build an offense around three guards who are supposedly great shooters (Devon Hall being the other) and two of those guards suddenly forget how to shoot, what you have is an offense built around one great shooter. And that is not a good offense at all.

Despite Virginia's offensive problems, though, the Hoos entered this week sitting atop the AP poll for the first time in more than 35 years. This has me wondering whether maybe — just maybe — Virginia's strength comes on the other end of the floor. I'll have to study more film to be sure, but the vibe I'm getting is that the Wahoos are so good because they play great team defense. What's that? They're playing historically great defense? Like, Virginia is literally playing a level of defense that rivals anything college basketball has seen in the past decade? Oh.

Well in that case, who cares whether Guy and Jerome aren't hitting from deep? Virginia shouldn't even bother playing offense anyway. What I'm most interested in finding out is how few points the Cavaliers can score and still win a game. With Pitt on the schedule next Saturday, I have a feeling we're about to discover that the answer is somewhere in the neighborhood of 12.

I just love that bit at the end of the Virginia entry...  :)

Auburn beat Alabama last night with only 7 scholarship players, down two starters, and a third starter had a gimpy ankle.

Heron the #2 scorer was scratched 30 minutes before game time with a stomach bug.  He was hospitalized and on IV fluids.  This left 7 scholarship players against an Alabama team that was much taller and played 10 people.

And Auburn outrebounded them and won by 19.  Auburn just wanted the win a lot more than Alabama did.  They played a lot harder, especially on the boards.  And they really did this with 6 people since Horace Spencer was in serious foul trouble the entire game.  Honestly, Alabama should have easily won this game except they did not play as a team, did not hustle, and did not really fight for rebounds.  I would have been angry if I was a Bama fan and lost the opportunity to sweep Auburn.

Auburn only needs to win one of their last 3 games to clinch the regular season.  This has been one of the most enjoyable seasons of Mens BB that I've followed closely during my lifetime - and that includes a ton of the UNC teams going back to 1980.

Teams cannot exceed their potential, but they almost never play up to their potential.  This year Auburn did - even if they lose the rest of their games because they are so thin.

Oh, and right now they're up 19 at the half against FSU, who are behind NC St in the conference standings but somehow ranked, while NC St (w/ wins over multiple #2-ranked teams) somehow isn't...

Mississippi State could not hit from 3 point range (3-19) and Aja Wilson played with the result being the 4th straight SEC title for the Game Chickens.  Mississippi State had 70% of the fans at the Bridgestone Arena.

Mississippi State looked better than last year and USC looked worse - but good enough to win.

The Women's NCAA BB Tourney has had some interesting results.  The ACC has thus far been the strongest conference.  The SEC has bombed with only the top two teams left (Mississippi State & South Carolina).  There have also been far more upsets this year than I can remember.  Usually the Women's NCAA tourney is close to a straight chalk result.

Brant, NCSU is doing better than anticipated so far.

A couple of series that weren't expected to be that competitive have turned out to be pretty good - Utah v OKC and Cleveland v Indy - and at least one turned into a sweep in the 'other' direction (NOLA over Portland).
