Title: Critter R.I.P.
Post by: Bison on May 13, 2012, 06:48:54 PM
Can anyone here confirm if this is true?

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3103878&mpage=1&key=&#3103900

This is Debbie, Critter's girlfriend. I know he was on this site often. Critter had a heart attack on 5.3.12. We had to take him off the ventilater this last Tuesday. They tried to for 25 minutes to get a heartbeat, they succeeded. However, due to the lack of blood flow to the brain, he was in a vegetative state. He would only open his eyes half way, was not able to focus or make contact with you. He also could not follow any commands such as looking around the room or squeezing your hand. Critter died early this morning.

Jesus if this is true.  It's very sad news indeed.  Critter was a very thoughtful man and he will be sorely missed.

I haven't heard anything like this, but Critter has been offline for quite some time. I sure hope this isn't true, Critter was a fine person and great to talk to. But I can't imagine anyone would be so crazy as to put a post like that up for a joke, so I hate to say I think it may be valid. I will miss him as well.

I've searched on google and bing and didn't see an obituary for Raymond Cheatham.  He sent me a package in Afghanistan with some pictures colored by his grand kids. Just really sad news.

The announcement was just made on the forums. It may take a couple of days to show up. Keep looking and keep us posted. I don't see him registered here as Critter so there's not much I can do from here.

Usually takes a day or two after a death for an obituary to show-up in newspapers. Very, very sad.

statistically, I'm surprised we haven't lost anyone else in the 7+ years I've been hanging around with this gang.

But to lose a thoughtful and articulate guy like Critter really sucks.

RIP Critter...may there be plenty of dice in whatever heaven you find yourself.

Critter and I had an ongoing Civ game for a while.  We talked occasionally and he even promised to get by and have a beer with me.  I asked him to come over to Grogheads, but, I think he was attached to Azz.  I used to get texts from Ray from time to time and Azz would Reply All whatever his response was.  I switched phones about a month ago and lost some of my Contact information.  Critter was one of them.  I'm sorry about the news.  I hope it isn't true, but I'm afraid it may be.  R.I.P. my friend.

I'm stunned as well.  It seems like just yesterday (even though it was ~9 months ago) when I spoke with critter on the phone about my then-unemployment, and the advice he was giving me on possibly becoming a truck driver.

He was a really friendly and personable guy, and I will definitely miss him.  I can't believe he's gone.  :'(

He was a fun and funny guy. I have a fond memory of us having a good laugh when I made some quip about Montesanto's GMO starting a zombie apocalpyse. It turned out, the next day he was driving a load of Montesanto products and he told me not to blame him. It was a great exchange and show a keen wit. Funny the things you remember.

...Is it crazy that I'm actually considering driving down to St. Louis (St. Charles) for the funeral?  My plan is only half-assed at the moment (I'd need to get Thursday night off, which might be tricky), but I'm thinking it could work.

All right, I think I've got it worked out so that I can attend his funeral on Friday.

I was already going to be heading southeast this weekend anyway (Syttende Mai celebration in my mom's hometown, and I'm visiting my grandmother while I'm at it).  The main difference is now I'm leaving a day earlier and am taking a longer "scenic route" than originally planned -- 11/12-hour trip versus 5 hours.  :P

It'll mean Thursday & Friday will be long days with all the driving, of course (it's also a 7/8-hour drive from St. Louis back up to Spring Grove, MN so I can attend the Syttende Mai festival), but I deem it worth the effort.  I considered Ray a friend, and he meant a lot to many of us; I think it's the least I can do for him.

By the by, I'm wondering if I should maybe get a card and "sign" it from any Grogs (and possibly WG'ers) who request that I put their name(s) in.  What do you guys think?

yes please.
(and maybe in a separate note the links to his tribute threads at Grog, WG and Matrix .... maybe there are more sides?)
it may comfort his family and closer non wargaming friends a little, that he was much more then  'a trucker from IL with an exotic hobby'
He made a global footprint.

hmmm ...i also opt for a quick collection here for some 'flowers'? (i dont know the right American english expression)
i would 'paypal' you my share upfront to your account  (pm me the infos that would be nessesary ...if that would be ok?)

You guys want me to use your real names (in which case you should probably PM me with them, as there are still some of you where I don't know it or -- to my shame/embarrassment -- have forgotten it), or will your GH handles suffice?

EDIT:  It would help if you could please let me know no later than, say, 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning (CST), as I'll be largely "off the grid" after that.

Thanks for all the well-wishes, everyone!

Well I'm back -- so to speak.  I'm now in La Crosse, WI (got in last night around 10:00), getting ready to go visit my grandmother and attend the Syttende Mai festivities across the river in Spring Grove.  Before I go, though, here's a quick report on my trip to St. Louis for the funeral:

Ray's memorial service went well (if that can be said for such an event).  It was held at the funeral home, and was a fairly intimate gathering; I'd guess somewhere around 50 people were there, mostly family (I believe).  Appropriately, he was being buried with his copy of Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris.  I had to grin when I saw that!

The Patriot Guard riders were there in full force as well (for those who didn't know, critter served in the Navy).  I'd never seen them in person before, and they presented a most impressive -- and moving -- sight.  I thanked them for their service, having promised myself I would do so should I ever have the opportunity.

Ray's ex-wife Linda (with whom he'd remained on good terms) found me shortly before the service began; she greeted me warmly, especially when I explained what I was doing there and how I knew Ray.  She delightedly introduced me to his friend Greg, with whom he'd been playing wargames for the better part of 30 years.  (We talked shop a little bit, despite his being clearly out of my league -- this guy's experience with the genre was orders of magnitude beyond my own -- and also got to learn a little bit more about critter in the process.)  He was an incredibly nice guy, and we sat together during the service.

I also spoke with Ray's fiance Debbie afterwards, and she too was very glad to see me after I explained how I knew him.  (In addition, I thanked her for informing us about his passing.)  I told her and Linda about the Grogheads, Wargamer, and Matrix sites (I'd included the web addresses for all three in the card), and they said they would be sure to check out the threads dedicated to him.  They seemed very touched by the fact that so many people whom they'd never even met were affected by Ray's death, and I made sure to let them know that they had our full sympathy and well-wishes.

Anyway, that's about all I got for now.  I'm off to see my grandmother and stuff my face with fine Norwegian cuisine.  Later guys!

Martok,
Just wanted to echo the sentiments here as well. Critter's family now knows that they are not alone in missing him. Most of us will probably pass away unnoticed by all but a few friends and family. Critter leaves a living memory behind that networks across several continents. Where ever he may be, Valhalla, Heaven, etc ( joining his daughter who died too young)  he can look out and see how many people he touched in some way. Thank you for helping make it happen.

Martok - you've done the family proud.  And anyone who doesn't think we're a family doesn't know what a family is.

Amen!

I'm embarrassed to even say "you're welcome" -- I'd originally done this for my own reasons, and was genuinely happy to do it -- but you're welcome.  :)

It did feel good to be representing the community at Ray's memorial service.  I think Debbie and Linda (and hopefully, his entire family) will derive some comfort knowing he's missed by so many of us.

^Thanks again Martok. And get some good WWI stories from Granny this time!

I am looking forward to those WWI stories!
I'll start another thread about that when I get a chance (hopefully tonight).

However, I'll warn you:  It's not going to be much.  As I've said before, my grandmother was only a little girl during the war, and she doesn't remember much at this point.

My oldest son and I recently had a somewhat drunken discussion (Jack Daniel shots and Shiner Beer in a college bar within walking distance of his house) during which the subject of what his Mom and I want done when that time comes. He wasn't being morbid, his best friend's dad was my age and just passed away of a heart attack, so it was kinda natural for that to cross his mind.

Among other things that I told him (like don't spend a dime you don't have to!), I asked him to log onto my account here with the news, but also that in lieu of traditional weepy stuff, I wouldn't be in the least offended if an Irish wake broke out with shots, beer and the sound of laughter. There are certainly worse ways to be serenaded off into the afterlife than hearing the laughter of friends and loved ones on your way.

My point? Simply this. Free booze when I pass. That's one way to guarantee a good turn out   ;)

Amanda, please accept my deepest condolences.

We all enjoyed your dad's virtual company and we all miss his presence.

I've also lost my father unexpectedly (it will be 6 years this coming December).  I want you to know that missing Dad (even at Father's Day) does get easier over time.  Keep breathing and eventually things do get better.

Hi Amanda,

I didn't know your father well, but I truly enjoyed his company. We miss him. I'm sorry for your loss but cheered by your story of enjoying gaming with him.

Hey Amanda!  I'm very glad you found us.  :D

(I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you and your siblings that day I was in St. Charles for the funeral.  I was on a tight schedule that weekend, and I knew I wouldn't be able to stay in Missouri for very long before I had to head back up to Wisconsin/Minnesota.)

Yeah, your dad was a good guy -- which of course, you already knew! -- and he's missed by an awful lot of us as well.  It was hard enough losing a friend; I can only imagine what it's been like for you to lose your father (especially so quickly/unexpectedly).  I'm glad we've been able to help you cope, though; that makes us feel better too.  :)

Tell your mom I say hello!

Greetings, Amanda.  All of us who knew your dad, even slightly, were glad that Martok was able to come and express sympathy for all of us.  I enjoyed playing games online with him.  I had hoped that one day, his route would take him through my own small little town.  I would like to have had dinner and a beer with him and talk history and games and life.  He is missed.

Hi Amanda...your Dad really helped me out big time last year when I lost my job. He was a generous guy and stepped up to help me out and I will remember that. All the best to you and your family.

From ScottP at Wargamer -

QuoteCritter's love for wargames and especially Decisive Campaigns can never be forgotten. This was discussed with the team at Slitherine/Matrix Games and we'll be putting a mention to Critter in the credits of Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue.

That seems like a nice way of honoring Critter.

Amanda

I just wanted to offer you my sincerest condolences for the loss of your father.  He made a very generous gesture and sent a care package to me while I was deployed that had some pictures colored by his grand daughters.  It was very thoughtful and touching gesture on his part.

I hope that you and your family are finding comfort and peace in the knowledge of just how many people your father touched during his life.

I thought this was pretty cool...

A fellow over in the Matrix forums apparently noticed the following on his copy of Decisive Battles: Case Blue (the sequel to Decisive Battles: Warsaw to Paris, the game critter was buried with):

"DEDICATION
In memory of
Raymond W. "Critter" Cheatham, Jr.,
from his friends at Matrix Games."
