Title: Hurricane Florence
Post by: steve58 on September 10, 2018, 08:26:51 AM
*sigh*  Looking like NC/SC/VA/etc are gonna get hammered.  Good luck to all in her path.

Truly. This storm will be a bad one no matter exactly where it hits. Flooding inland could be very bad too. I would pack-up the family and head either south or way inland. Don't wait until Wed/Thurs. Get lots of water, batteries, gas, and plenty of TP.

And we have two more right behind this one. We don't need another hurricane season like last year.

Stay safe.

Florence reminds me of Isabel in 2003.  Same time of year, and making landfall in about the same place.

Back in 2003, I was in the process of buying a house at the southern end of Hatteras Island.  Closing day had been planned for the day Isabel hit (about 15 September, IIRC), but the sellers had asked to delay it.  Fine with me because it would give me a chance to see if the house was still there (it was).

Where I live in the DC area, Isabel caused some problems.  We were without water and electricity for about five days.  I remember going to a neighborhood swimming pool and filling up a jerry can with water for the toilet.

This year, we've had a lot of rain in northern VA.  Flood warnings are almost becoming routine (we had one last weekend).  The ground is saturated, and the rivers are probably pretty swollen too.  So if the storm soaks us as it moves inland and up the coast, it will be more rain that we don't need.

I was reading some of the forecast blogs on weather underground today, and this doesn't look good at all.  They're saying the storm is going to stall after landfall like Harvey.

This is going to really, really suck for a lot of people.

Crap.  :(

Keep safe all you Mid-Atlantic-type Persons. Take your Personettes and Personlings and head for high ground. Don't forget to swing by Sir Slash's place to load up on TP.

Stay safe guys.

Glad I'm in Wisconsin this  week and not NC.

I read about the stalling too. Over already drenched areas. Not good.

In the event of an emergency, TP can also be used to bandage wounds, send smoke signals, and as a lasso to pull someone to safety. It's called a 'Charmin Shank'.  :coolsmiley:

I just opened the Google App store, and there is an app at the top for Hurricane Florence from the American Red Cross.  Looks like it is designed to help with planning and communications.  If your in the affected area, you may want to check it out.

Guessing it's on the Apple store also.

*sigh* I think I need to drive down to Charleston, SC and tell my little sister and her husband to GTFO NOW! :-\  ...can't understand why they want to ride this one out.  Its going to be right on their doorstep for 24+ hours  :tickedoff: :pullhair:

I begged my kids to get out of FLA before that killer one last year.  They ignored me.  Turned out ok for them, but, riding out a Cat 3 is not a good thing if you can get out of the way.  Here's hoping you can talk them out of there.

This has had one of the odder storm tracks I've seen in years for a major storm.

I've been watching a lot of this in lieu of the Weather Channel.  I like how this channel has a quad thing going.  They had that Frying Pan Reef cam live in one corner for quite a while today.

I think the flagstaff thing held together pretty well considering. I have a 12 ft. aluminium flagpole in my backyard and the first serious thunderstorm that came by the wind bent it.  :o  Now if it's bad weather I take my flag down.

'Kevin' is the internet nickname given to the Frying Pan Reef flag.

I read that the storm surge was 10 feet which can kill.

Good grief! -- I'm a little surprised at that, considering it came in as a Cat 2 before making landfall as a Cat 1.

Just goes to show, don't mess with hurricanes, ever.

{moving to the Rockies} {just to be sure}

A customer of ours, over on the NC/TN border, says they're expecting to get 10" of rain there in the mountains.

That water will have to go downhill somewhere...  :hide:

How are you guys in and around Big Flo fairing? Everyone ok?

The reported death count is up to 13-14 depending on who's reporting. :(

I think 6-8 people have been run-over by news reporters on their way to cover the flooding. I saw 3 guys fighting over a fallen tree in Wilmington.  ::)
