can we all just pause for a moment and revel in the fact that Star actually used the correct form of "you're" for the first time in, well...  (lessee, he hasn't been a regular here for 2 years, so...) at least 36 months?

It was just so very mediocre, gorgeous to look at but the story... meh. Facile enough for young teens, but it was a big disappointment to me.

I never really found the Black Panthers comics all that engaging to start with. There seems to be more hype around the sociological aspects of the film then the actual story itself.

The Marvel movies in general haven't really been deep from a story standpoint.

RLM has what sounds like a decent review of it. Mike, though, mentions he's starting to get a little worn out on Marvel movies, and he does have a point.

There are spoilers, but they put a placeholder to tell you to fast forward to a certain point when that time comes.

Yep. Started feeling the fatigue a while back. More noticeable with the Star Wars movies though, imo. The Disney-fication of these franchises does wear one down.

With exception to Winter Soldier and perhaps Iron Man 3 I agree.

But they are obviously sacrificing individual story for the greater Avengers arc. Maybe once the Infiniti war is concluded they will get better. That said these are still the best comic book movies put to film with exception to X-men 2.

Agreed. They're great comic book movies, but they're still comic book movies so I don't go into any of them expecting a lot story-wise.

I didn't like the original X-Men trilogy all that much.

But, I REALLY liked how they incorporated some characters/elements into the following X-Men movies...pretty cool.

If I waxed rhapsodical about the Passion of the Christ (a flawed but genuinely artistic film) or the God is Not Dead films (flawed and not particularly artistic films -- both examples chosen partly because Bob loathes them ;) ), you might suspect, also given my strong ideological beliefs, that I'm letting my ideology get the better of my critical judgment. And Bob has shown increasing SJW partisanship over the years.

I honestly can't imagine him giving this movie a meh rating and calling down upon himself the fury of social shaming, the likes of which were thrown at the guy who broke the 100% tomatorating for a similarly meh review.

(Edited to clarify: I watched MovieBob's review a few days ago when he first released it.)

Mike and Jay from RLM... mostly Mike, echoed (in a more educated and eloquent way) my feelings. I had high hopes for this movie. The undercover operative stuff was good for me. The ceremonial stuff was not.

I appreciated how Mike and Jay each had different things they most liked about the story (although each was bored by what each other liked!) -- as well as wanting to see more of some things. It was a highly nuanced and sober review.

On the otherhand - he hated 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - a film I thought was fantastic. It's funny how you mentioned SJW...because it was that kind of perspective that showed right through in his review of 3 Billboards. Slamming the film for even briefly mentioning rape, drugs, bad police blah, blah, blah.

So I'm not saying he's right or wrong - I was putting an alternative on the boards.

I thought Black Panther was good - edging on very good - but I didn't think it was as good as he made out. I would put 3 Billboards way ahead of this movie if I had to go and see either again.

Black Panther - 6.5
3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 8

Just back from seeing BP. Liked it a lot. Wouldn't say it is the best MCU movie, but it is definitely one of the better ones.

The criticisms are few and minor:

Some of the things I really liked:Solid Marvel movie. I give it an 'A'.

Took the family to go see it and both girls liked it, while my son and I were not all that impressed. I found it very long and the long lost kid - who turned Navy SEAL and later bad guy just seemed so clichè. My opinion appears to be in the minority - at least in the mainstream press, etc....

I get what they were trying to do, and in a way I kind of respect it for going out on a limb like that, but Iron Man comics were my main read when I was a kid, and Mandarin was of course his arch-enemy for decades. What they did was totally womp wooommmmp.

It was lame and a waste of Ben Kingsley. Guy Pearce was not a good villain either.

It was, but I still had to roll my eyes just a tad because they had to shoehorn an Asian location into the film.

Yeah, because the Bond films never shoehorn in locations.

I had much less of a problem with it than I did with say in the Transformers movies.

It coulda been China, I guess. South Korea makes as much sense as anywhere else, but you know they did that on purpose to pad their numbers there. Or maybe not, what do I know.

One of the more interesting subplots of the comics, is that Freeman's character (whose name I can't recall) ends up romantically involved with Shuri, the sassy younger sister of BP, who also (albeit temporarily) takes on the BP mantle.

The MCU usually likes to play the long game (though I think they fumbled in several ways with BP, but I appreciate the fumbles are based in fidelity to the classic roots of the character and his story -- e.g. he really shouldn't have been BP yet in Civil War). So I'm not going to be surprised if they're setting up for this down the road!

Sadly, this fellow is not wrong about the weaknesses of the film. Weaknesses which, again I'm trying to be fair, derive almost entirely from hewing too faithfully to the source material (except when it doesn't on occasion which also generates plot friction between the concepts).

I still enjoyed the spectacle. I just had to quickly stop thinking about the movie, at all.
