Title: That time of year has come again to scare Gus!
Post by: JasonPratt on September 15, 2017, 11:02:15 AM
And yes, he has already finished Alien: Isolation. Next plz.  >:D

I've had my eye on Darkwood for a while. Top-down horror survival. My favorite of many good reviews:

This is a great thread idea, thanks Pratt!

Once I am on a proper pc (tonight) I will check out Darkwood some more. If it's the top down game I think it is, I was no really that intrigued.

What is the name of that relatively recent game set in 17th century North America that sees the protagonist looking for the reason a colony got lost...just saw it for sale at Humble Bundle or Bundletars for .99.

Can't remember the name but I have been interested in it for a while.

I can scare Gus. Gus, those Prit Buttar books you wanted me to hang onto.... I used them to keep my velvet painting of Elvis above water during Hurricane Irma. Sorry.  :wow:   BOO!  :DD

Not really. Just shaking you up man. They were the first thing I put up high and dry. Next was the Elvis painting.

You're in luck, Gus! For the next five days the Humble Store is selling Betrayer (https://www.humblebundle.com/store/betrayer) for 99¢.

I actually own Betrayer, but have never played it (or even installed it so far as I recall).

In other news, I could have retired some time ago to play games, except for all the games I've bought over the years, including ones I've never even played.  L:-)

Yeah Greybriar I got that email for the .99 deal - it's what made me think of Betrayer. However a quick check of Metacritic reveals some meh reviews, so...anything else you guys recommend?

At drill right now so it's going to take a lot to scare me 💀

I like to call those 'investments'. I've pinned my retirement on the returns.

The pat answer I used to give was the Gabriel Knight series (http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/gabriel-knight-series). But it's pretty long in the tooth now except for Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition which has a Metascore of 74 and a User Score of 8.1 at Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/gabriel-knight-sins-of-the-fathers-20th-anniversary-edition). Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition is currently on sale at the Humble Store (https://www.humblebundle.com/store/gabriel-knight-sins-of-the-fathers-20th-anniversary-edition) for 75% off, or $4.99 U.S.

You're welcome, Gus. I haven't played Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition yet but I just discovered it in my GOG game library and am installing it now. As to when I'll get around to playing it...well, possibly next month during Halloween. ;D

Sang-Froid is exactly free on Steam right now for no reason I can understand.  ???

It isn't a jump-out-and-boo kind of game, but it's certainly a game about overcoming fear (by both faithing and sciencing the bleep out of it.  O0 ) Atmosphere is very good.

Space Beast Terror Fright (which should be "Terror Fight" frankly) is a properly dread-inducing Space Hulk kind of game. It's also hard as hell, even with multiple players, and throat clenching alone. Looks a bit old-school as a 3D shooter, but claustophobic and dark. Light exists only to give you hope to take away.  >:D

^Checking out Sang Froid again now. I remember being somewhat interested when it was released a few years ago.

Greybriar that Gabriel Knight 20th Anniversary game looks pretty good!

I played it back in college and enjoyed it then but I wouldn't call it scary.  It's an old-timey point and click adventure game.

You might want to have a look at Layers of Fear.  It's pretty spooky in places but it's also full of a lot of horror cliches.  Good game if you can find it on sale.

Also, the team who made that recently released a cyberpunk adventure called Observer and the main character is voiced by Rutger Hauer (I think he needs to lay off the smokes and whiskey.  He's starting to sound like my aunt).  It's very, very Blade Runnery.

I'm only about 90 minutes into it so far so I can't tell you if the story's any good but the aesthetic is fantastic.  The amount of detail the artists crammed into each location is phenomenal.

Started playing Enderal (conversion mod for Skyrim) again and in the last hour found four different locations that look like they will fit the scary bill well.

Local cemetery outside the capital city of Ark [unexplored]:

Some kind of fortress, not too far from the cemetery:

Gate surrounding the manor house of the 'Aged Man,' a bizarre old hermit/artist who likes 'puppets':

Entering the Aged Man's manor house to complete a quest. Wish us luck.

Is the mod known by another name? A search on the Workshop didn't return any results.

Wow. Just amazing the talent of so many individuals. Keep us informed of how you like it. I may even reinstall Skyrim.

Sorry I don't think it's loaded to Steam workshop. Enderal is basically a one man project - do a search for SureAI and that will bring you to the main site.

I've put about 25 hours in to Enderal before returning now to where I left off and if you liked Skyrim at all you will enjoy Enderal too. A DLC pack is also being worked on, as well as constant updates. The lore alone is worth the price of admission (which is free 😎).

Perhaps. It reminds me of Sunless Sea, which I also own. The latter was in early access when I got it back in 2014. I haven't played it since they made it a full version, but that's because of other gaming distractions. Sunless Sea might be doable, but it's a challenge.

I was just saying S-Sea has the same kind of feel. You're exploring a dark dimension and encountering stuff. It's not nearly as strange and trippy as Darkwood is (I had a Let's Play on briefly of Darkwood this morning), but it's somewhat similar.

There's a free demo up on Steam for a new horror game called Home Sweet Home.  It's from a Thai development company.  I don't know if it's the same group that made Araya or not.  That's another horror game that was put out by a Thai dev group and got pretty good reviews.  I was going to get it until I found out that you couldn't remap the key controls.

Anyway....Home Sweet Home.

Well I just celebrated the 27th anniversary of my 21st birthday, and maybe I'm just a product of my time, but there is something genuinely authentic, weird, and frightening about horror movies from the late 60's through the 70's. Perhaps it is due to the fact that many were slow burners and didnt rely on CGI's to generate emotions. Tie in some open 4 barrels pumping down the highway at 7 MPG's and you might end up with

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fangoria.com%2Fnew%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2013%2F06%2FRaceWithTheDevilStyleB.jpg&hash=4bd8e10fd3786a519527529f40cbc3e031c85203)

OK. Bad example. I don't dare watch it in the last 40 years to see how corny it actually was but I remember going to the drive-in with my parents and my older brother tormenting my for weeks afterwards. In those days there was an unspoken rule that mom would say 'blanket' and whatever we gleaned while peeping out from underneath was just part of some twisted learning curve. From knifes through the eyes to partial frontal nudity.   :bd:

That would suck if Darkwood is like those old Sierra adventure games. You know, where you forget to pick up something but the game lets you go 16 hours in before you realize you didn't pick something up and you have to start all over.

I'm playing Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father 20th Anniversary Edition from gog.  The game is broken up into days where you must accomplish certain things to advance to the next day.  I'm currently on Day 4.

The rework is pretty good.  So far, none of the basic puzzles or story line has changed.  I remember enough of it from the last time I played to get through the game.  The reworked game does not have the timing issue from playing a DOS game, has a space bar to indicate hotspots so you don't have to play "hunt for the magic pixel," and retains all of the psychological buildup of the original.  It has been pretty fun, probably great fun for someone who has never played it.

I had to check but I have Gabriel Knight on GOG also, though I never played it. If you guys recommend it that's good enough for me to give it a try sooner rather than later.

BTW Gus, Sunless Sea is pretty enjoyable. It's much slower-paced and not in-your-face with jump scares or anything. It comes across as a Lovecraftian horror thing too. The longer you spend out on the water, the more Terror your crew accumulates, but your goal is to explore. The game warns you from the beginning that your Captain will die, so don't get too attached to them. ;D You'll get to continue on as other characters, though, as something gets passed down each time it happens.

Admittedly I rage quit last night (well, not really rage, more like ::) than actual rage) when my Captain died about 20 minutes into the game.

Do you recommend Darkwood?

Depends how challenging you like your games, b. If you enjoy difficult puzzle solving and crafting, you with love it. I definitely enjoy it for it's creepy factor from what I've played so far - couple of nights worth - but I am stuck now and think I have to start again. I was also constantly consulting the internet for help. It's not like Skyrim or The Witcher or other more standard rpgs, roguelikes or action games...the difficulty can be brutal.

I'll be posting a quick and dirty review with screening here soon too. You don't have much to lose if you get it though, at 15.00. I think it's worth the risk and it's something I would return to when feeling more ambitious/smart/self-confident.

If I keep mucking up in Darkwood I will switch gears to The Witcher 3 for the DLCs, and then Shadow of War comes out on 10/10 🤓

I finished it after 1.5 days of play.  It is better than the original - but not a lot different from the original.  Unfortunately, there is no screen capture on the program and greenshot would not work.  So I got no screenshots.  Still, my mind is refreshed enough to write a review for the mystery mobile front plate that does not exist.

I played it a bit yesterday to get a feel for it. If you press and hold the Space Bar, every object you can interact with will appear on the screen, just like airboy said. I wouldn't have believed it until I saw it - that's pretty amazing for a game from the early 90s.

No, I've never told Gus it's scary. It's got a major autumn haunted-house vibe going for it though, and plays heavily into the Batman theme of overcoming fear by becoming what scares the things that scare you.

Another non-scary but hugely Halloween-atmospheric game (and much more linear) is the first Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

^ I don't usually go for gorefests - they tend to be too over the top for me. That said I did like the first Silent Hill game, Alan Wake and some others like Clive Barker's Undying when it came out. I've been a little curious about Evil Within, but more interested in Resident Evil - Biohazard. It never seems to go on sale though.

I bought Dying Light a few months ago but got stuck on one of the early parkour sets and rage quit - which is a shame because I was really looking forward to that game :/
