LOL! :-" After all my frustration it turns out that my graphics card drivers were two years out of date. :-[ I was trying to figure out what on earth the problem was as my rig should be more than able to handle things. As soon as I updated the drivers it worked straight away. Not all that odd when you stop and think about it, but at the time I just thought it was something less obvious!!! Anyway, I thought I'd share the solution just in case someone else runs up against the problem.
