Title: Civ 4 Caveman to Cosmos Mod Update
Post by: solops on February 16, 2018, 12:12:23 PM
The Caveman-to-Cosmos mod was updated to version 38 this morning. I have not played it much since version 28 and even then it made the game awesome. The changes to basic Civ4 are stunning. The mod allows options to change city parameters, research parameters, religion parameters, leader parameters and development, etc. New game speed and development options are added. Lots of AI enhancements. The new combat options are mind boggling - ambush, retreat, pursuit, hidden unit and much, much more. Non of the feature threads tell much of what is in the game. Only after installing it and going into the game setup is the full range of options revealed.

Guys, forget Civ5 and Civ6. This is the ultimate Civ experience.

I am really jazzed about this mod and I have to share some stuff. Attached is the official Player Guide. I want to post some highlights of SOME of the OPTIONS for combat, highlighting one comment:

"The goal of the C2C Combat Mod is to transform the Civ IV base stack combat system into something that will make you wonder why Civ V and VI EVER thought it would be a good idea to introduce 1 Unit Per Tile when there was still so much we could do with Stack Combat."

A few of the purely combat related options in the game setup:

Surround and Destroy
Advanced Nukes
No Nukes
Upscaled Building and Unit Costs
C2C Combat Mod - Fight or Flight
C2C Combat Mod - Size Matters
C2C Combat Mod - Hide and Seek
Realistic Siege
C2C Combat Mod - Without Warning

Been playing this a lot the last 2 weeks.  I think this mod does something for Civ4 similar to what Black Ice did for HOI3.  Lots of extra stuff plus some changes that should have been in the original game.  Like being able to build multiple items in the same turn if you have enough production points for it.

I do have to say I don't enjoy slogging through all the animals during the prehistoric era.  Sometimes you need a couple hunters just so your regular troops can get through the herds without damage.

That does look interesting (the mod, not the screenshot--I'll wait for her in VR).  Solops, do they list release notes in any format besides a Word Doc?  For those of us trying not to use free products rather than pay out the nose for MS Office...

If not, no worries, just thought I'd ask!  Thanks, guys, for posting this.  I played the old Civ IV Fall from Heaven mod about 2x as much as I ever played the original game, so if this mod has half the legs, I might be dusting off my old Civ IV copy.  You know, if I can actually find the DVD...   :)

This mod got an update which was mainly a cleanup, which I am grateful for. I was loving it and then ran into a game-killing error at the end of the dark ages. This update fixes that and a lot of other stuff:

https://www.moddb.com/mods/caveman2cosmos/downloads/caveman2cosmos-v385

From the devs -

"v38.5
We haven't done much to change the game for 38.5. Which is why it's v38.5 instead of v39.

What we have been up to since the v38 release has been little but debugs and polishes. No new features or processes or assets. Not even many adjustments to those things. BUT there have been a LOT of rebalance efforts. debugs, and AI corrections - not NEW AI so much as getting it to work as it was designed. Still no claims of perfection but you should find the AI much more enjoyable to play against now.

v38.5 is much what v38 was intended to have been. As a team, we've been disciplined in holding back on adding new content in the meantime, waiting for this mid-version before cracking open any more cans of worms.

I'm really enjoying my personal play testing of this mid-release version and I'm sure you will as well. Things are working very nicely so far as we can see. I'm sure more bugs will be found but so far we're playing through some of the best game experiences we've ever had with C2C. Sometimes its best just to clean house right? We invite you to share in the quality of this new C2C experience.

Yep... there went your summer ;)"

I played the mod for about a month when you first posted about it.  Enjoyed it for a while but the grind of harvesting roaming animals ended up making the game drag on.  Only got about half way through the classical era (500 BC) before I stopped.  Does wild animal spam get reduced as time goes by?  I wanted to try starting at a later era but the mod recommends not doing that because it disadvantages the AI too much.

And I guess the biggest question: is my save file compatible with the newest patch?  I'd hate to go through that all again.

You might have a problem with the DVD.

I tried re-installing CivIV; Warlords; and Beyond the Sword, but it doesn't work anymore because of a change Windows made. 2K were doing a Steam replacement scheme for people with disk copies, but that has expired.

You'll have to play it on Steam now, or the GOG version.

Someone produced a patch that takes away the CD check. I believe it was sanctioned by developer but I can't recall where it's located at the moment.

edit: Did some reading at CivFanatics forums and if you have installed the BTS 3.19 patch it should run without the disk check.

The animal kill grind has been toned down, but it does last a bit. I play on Marathon speed. I reloaded all of my games from the Civ4 Complete DVD and I have no problems playing under Win7.

:)   I would NEVER have made that connection!!!  I still go by Civfanatics from time to time, mainly to check on this mod. I have been caught up in other things and not been in a while. Now that this new version is updated, I'm going to try it out. I have gotten addicted to Shadow Empires, so I have to kick that first....SE has very steep learning curve and some vital info is poorly presented. Hopefully, the dev will sort that out soon.

Civ IV is my favorite Civ game.  I didn't know about this mod.  How difficult is it to dowload and install?  Do you get the mod through Steam or the Civ Fanatics forum?

QFT!  (in case none of you knew of my affection for IV)  And I second the question posed, how easy is it to install?

Easy peasy! Download the zip file from the link in the Civ Fanatics thread, which sends you to ModDB. Unzip it. It creates a C2C folder. Move or copy that folder into the mods folder of the Beyond the Sword subfolder of Civ4. Done! Just select C2C mod in the Civ4 startup menu.

The download link

The latest is 40.1

Also, I have been using the 32-bit exe extender for all my old programs. It helps a great deal by helping old programs address more RAM.

OK, running the new version and liking it much more than one from 2 years ago.  No hordes of animals hindering movement now.  I do have a problem with an invisible unit (Exile?) pillaging my improvements.  I can't find anyway to observe them (used Watcher and Enforcer).  Building city improvements too (watchtower, etc) Any ideas what to do?

To answer my own question, I continued playing and eventually I got a start of turn message that said a criminal had been detected in my city.  When I clicked on my Enforcer, there was a new action  button at bottom that said apprehend criminal.  Pressing it resulted in capture and disposal of a Russian Exile.  Cost me a total of two improvements, and about a dozen trails.

Major Update today from v40.1 to v 41. This update breaks save game compatibility, so beware. The devs say that the update addresses stability, game balancing, speed and memory usage.

The Caveman2Cosmos v43.7  For Civ 4 has been out since January...and I just found it. This mod is fantastic. I have been playing it for years. It make me wonder why they ever bothered with Civ 5 and Civ 6. I think Civ 4 with this mod is a far, far better game. It has AI improvements, new techs, new eras, combat changes including a sort of combined arms...LOTS of stuff.

https://www.moddb.com/mods/caveman2cosmos/downloads/caveman2cosmos-v43

From the ModDB page:

"Caveman2Cosmos is a CivFanatics community mod that add new features and content to the Civilization 4 experience, with almost daily updates since November 2010. It is the spiritual successor the The Civilization 4 mod Rise of Mankind and its addon A New Dawn, and combined the work of over 100+ modders to create a mod to "rule them all". It is developed by StrategyOnly Productions with its modding team made up of prominent members of CivFanatics.

Another year of refinements and improvements. Caveman2Cosmos for 2023. Some more UI and AI improvements as well as some building refinements. Unit sightline and culture growth and decay revisions. The AI isn't perfect yet, but gaining intelligence rapidly and should be very difficult to play against now.

Caveman2Cosmos is the most expansive mod for Civilization IV. It stretches the game from the early prehistoric all the way to the conclusion of Humanity's journey through technology and revolution. Start from the true beginnings of Homo Sapient and end in the farthest future imaginable. Every era has been more intensely detailed and the game rules themselves are pushing the boundaries of the original Civ IV game engine to all kinds of new frontiers. This is a true 'what if' mod that explores the potentials of alternative histories and futures that could have been and yet could be. Warning: Highly Addictive."

It is amazing. I do wish they'd flesh out the "cosmos" half though, it has a lot of interesting late-game ideas regarding space exploration but the mechanics are all broken (which they freely admit). And I don't mean unbalanced, I mean they literally don't work.
