Title: #TBT: Gaming Nostalgia!
Post by: bayonetbrant on July 14, 2015, 09:24:43 AM
While the GrogCast is on its Summer hiatus, we've got a new Tuesday feature for you: Gaming Nostalgia! (http://grogheads.com/?tag=nostalgia)

We're going to be running all sorts of old ads and articles from 25 or more years ago, back in the ancient days of gaming.  Keep your eyes out for some serious cobweb-clearing memory-shakers over the next few months :)

First up today - Recon (http://grogheads.com/?p=8541), the RPG

Recon is one I never played. Wasn't really a fan of Palladium's stuff but now I'll have to scour the interwebs seeing what a copy of it costs.  :knuppel2:

Reading that ad, I wonder how we ever survived the "Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery". With all the ADD/ADHD out there these days, kids would probably be rioting in the streets if that was the case now.

I never played Recon either...role-playing in Vietnam didn't really appeal at the time, though there were plenty of ROTC classmates in high school that liked it.

Probably not, as they are still selling PDFs actively:

https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/168819/old-task-force-games-now-available-pdf

...though after checking each link I'm not finding Task Force Magazine, specifically, just a bunch of SFB stuff. I'm guessing they'd still claim copyright on Nexus, though.

Played a boatload of Recon which was originally released in a near-pamphlet format.  It then became ADVANCED Recon (oooooh) and was given a folio release.  Painted up a bunch of 22mm plastic VietNam era Marines to play ownside and, if memory serves, some Italieri VC.  There wasn't so much with the role playing in this game as there was the period between combats where you resupplied, rested, and prepared for the next mission.  The combat was also that modifier-heavy, check 14 charts, mid-80s sort of a thing that made Twilight 2000 such a joy.  Still, for the topic, it was the only game in town and, searching the collection, I've found I have two copies of Advanced Recon for some reason or another...

Best,

Jim

I really liked how the 007 modules differed from the movies enough to make them playable and at least somewhat surprising.

And who didn't create a 007 character without the 'weakness for women' trait?  ^-^

I played the hell out of this game from 4th grade to about 8th grade. The car chase rules were a lot of fun, and all of our adventures always seemed to have several chases.
For straight up new planetary exploration, Justifiers is a better game, as it's designed with that in mind. But for urban science fiction adventuring, Star Frontiers was a ton of fun

Star Frontiers was my group of friends second favorite rpg after AD&D.  There was also a ship combat add on (I guess, that was a long time ago) that played similar to Star Fleet Battles.

here it is Knight Hawks

In order:

Had 007.  Never had anyone to play the game wit.  Bought it mostly because I liked Bond.

Read the Elfquest graphic novels.  Even read some of the anthologies.  Never played the RPG.

Totally dug Star Frontiers.  Easier than Traveller to get into.  Also, the only sci-fi RPG I had after someone got my Traveller rulebook.

I actually fought at least 2 battles using the Delta-Vee system, too.  Never again.

I actually LIKED World Killer and the Cartesian representation of 3D space...then again, I liked trig a lot too, so that may be saying something.

Delta Vee, on the other hand, like so much else that SPI did, just drove that sumbitch off a cliff...

I used to love them (LOVE them), but they screwed me on a mail order back in the day. I ordered a copy of "Trader Captains and Merchant Princes" (the first edition, from '83 or '84 or so when it first came out) for the ST RPG. The book was a hot mess - pages double-printed, repeated, not all the content was there, some blank pages...it was an utter and complete travesty that ANYTHING like that could go out the door without being noticed. All they had to do was flip through the bloody thing to see it looked like a thesaurus and dictionary had wicked sloppy sex and left their letter leavings everywhere. And they never made it right.

I might still have it upstairs among my RPG stuff. If I have a chance later I'll go look for it and scan a few pages. As a tech writer/writer in general, sending someone something like that is akin to taking a hot shit into a book and mailing it to the customer. Unforgivable if not made right, and it wasn't.

"Trader Captains and Merchant Princes" is one of the few ST:RPG books I don't have (yes I still have all of mine stashed somewhere).

I will grant you that the editing and production values of many FASA ST products left a lot to be desired.

Played Morloc's Tower and its near relative (different company) Temple of Apshai.  I don't recall the former offering me the company and services of the lovely Imelda quite that way.  There is a very deep sense of bathos derived from a game looking like this one did -- dig them screenshots -- that repeatedly panders to the male libido...

I think Return to Brookmere was the first one I read and I collected a bunch of others.

Damn! I loved Return to Brookmere, too. I had the first six up to Revenge of the Rainbow Dragons but stopped collecting them after that for whatever reason.

Be An Interplanetary Spy was another favorite of mine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_an_Interplanetary_Spy

I usually hated those kinds of puzzles (like Games Magazine used to do), but I loved them in the BaIS series.

WHOA. Holy crap. You can download them for free for e-readers: https://archive.org/details/Be_an_Interplanetary_Spy_01_Find_the_Kirillian

I remember when Space: 1889 first came out and being completely perplexed by the concept and mocking it.  Then, a few years later I discovered the wonders of the Victorian era and dove head first into the game.  We had a lot of fun playing it (and me GMing it) but most of us were more interested in settings on Earth than in the whole Martian/Venusian sci-fi aspects of the game.  Still have all my books for the game but sadly the miniatures have long since disappeared.

The doc file attached below is 20 KB in size. (Or 19, estimates differ.)

It consists entirely of a text reading, and I quote:

Of course, I programmed code for an ad hoc means of calculating combat for Red Arrow, Black Shield, back in that day, on a Kaypro II, so I know that could really amount to, what, sixteen thousand lines of code? Sixteen thousand characters of code?

It's just uncanny that an empty text doc today takes up more space than a full game back in those days.

West End Games.  Man, I bought a lot of their stuff back in the day.  I liked Air Cav a lot but always had trouble getting anyone to play.  I liked the initiative system in Fire Team but felt the game itself was a bit lacking.  Soldiers seemed like it could be fun but that's one I never managed to get on the table.

I also bought pretty much all their Star Wars RPG stuff and still have a fair amount of it in a container somewhere.  (I also bought their Ghostbusters RPG....bad idea...)

The AH version was playable, but always seemed a little predictable, unless you were able to get the minor powers into play to shift things around.

I've heard mixed things, tho more bad than good, about the Avalanche version - GJK can probably weigh in on that one.  I did like the graphics updates for the Avalanche version.

The new LNLP version will be interesting to see.

I had the original Third Reich game...that thing was a PITA to learn, especially the economy rules, but I would be damned if I wasn't going to try to play it back in the day...and did so many times, more than a few solo. $60 for a wargame back in the 80s was a king's fortune then.
Title: Re: #TBT: Gaming Nostalgia!
Post by: mirth on August 04, 2017, 07:33:01 AM
Yeah, I bet I paid at least $40 for A3R back in the early 90s. That was a good chunk of dough for a kid making less than 20K/yr
Title: Re: #TBT: Gaming Nostalgia!
Post by: BanzaiCat on August 04, 2017, 07:37:30 AM
I think I was making 3.50 an hour...maybe closer to 4.00...whatever minimum wage was back in the late 80s.

It's sobering to consider that you'd have to work 20+ hours back then to pay for ONE wargame, whereas today, if I had free capital, it takes much less time to earn the dough for a game.

Very true...

It's funny that software is about the same, too. I worked at Babbage's back in 1989-90 and Electronics Boutique in 1990-91 and remember games like Leisure Suit Larry costing upwards of $59.99 or so when it came out. Just about every game was $59-70 or so brand new...didn't matter the platform. Amiga, Nintendo, PC, Apple, Mac, you name it.

Well, some games are priced at that level...we're talking about mega-games, though. I haven't seen many but it seems that the price point has gone up for a few of them, upwards of $80-100 or so for some.
Title: Re: #TBT: Gaming Nostalgia!
Post by: mirth on August 04, 2017, 07:54:43 AM
Sure, but those are well outside the average. It's unusual for me to pay more than $60 for a game, board or video. Most of what I buy is well under that.
Title: Re: #TBT: Gaming Nostalgia!
Post by: BanzaiCat on August 04, 2017, 07:57:15 AM
I tend to add a shitload of games to my Amazon cart and then select 'save for later.' Every so often I'll go check them, because the cart will show a list of any price changes on them. Sometimes they go down drastically in price. Armada, for example, was around $90, dropped to around $65, then soon after went back up to $80. It's like a retarded game stock market. I pretty much just hope that whatever I want is not on an upward trend when I earn a couple of Amazon gift cards.

The Fantasy Trip was the only RPG I ever got into, via Melee and Wizard (I collected most of those cheap and tasty Metagaming Microgames back in the day).
What D&D I had played was proving pretty dull, with unimaginative DMs and Monty Haul dungeons.

Funny that you illustrated the article with the cover of the second edition of Melee, the one in full colour of what looks like two Halflings and a dwarf fighting a gargoyle. The gargoyle has his reproductive appendage hanging out for some reason - are there even lady gargoyles? Still, I once read an online post by a  self-proclaimed fundamentalist Christian gamer complaining about how he had to draw swim trunks on the gargoyle so he wouldn't be offended!

^ I did try it once or twice but the group didn't really grok to it. They were more D&D players.

I had that issue whenever I tried to introduce new games - Twilight: 2000, Paranoia, Tales from the Floating Vagabond...they didn't take to Buck Rogers at all.

I loved the universe - it was rich and there were many fiction books that came out covering things, so it had all kinds of support. I just never knew anyone that actually played it and it kind of died out unfortunately.

It's a shame D&D cornered the market first. Maybe other games would have Stood a chance to become established and loved, if D&D hadn't so completely closed people down to looking at other games. Not that there's anything wrong in loving a game and becoming hooked, just it's sad other good games fell by the wayside. I'm glad you got a chance to try to introduce it though to a game group :) Thanks for explaining to me why you thought the game failed, it's interesting :)

Catching up here:

1.) That little print ad even looked like it was made on a Mac of the time!  :bd:

2.) I seem to recall the two SSI Buck Rogers RPGs being available on GoG by now. I haven't validated my fuzzy memory on this yet, but I do have an apparent memory of seeing them there. (Bro and I beat the first one on release, can't recall if we ever got around to beating the second one but I'm at least 80% sure we tried.)

3.) How this thread has not yet answered the question of whether there are female gargoyles, with links to Demonia or whatever her name was from the Disney cartoon, is beyond me.  ::)

Buck Rogers is an intellectual property separate from the other 'gold box' games, and not owned by SSI or WotC, and there's also quite a legal mess around Buck Rogers in general (movies and series being canceled), which might be why it won't ever get made. But who knows.

Spelljammer was a meh title but I wouldn't mind seeing it appear on GOG either.

My brother has my original disc. Or rather I'm sure he has lost my original disc, long ago. ;)

No matter. I've got the Campaign Series from Matrix.  :smitten:

Hm; so MtG's first advertisement in Dragon Mag, was for the Arabian Knights expansion? Its first expansion iirc.

Notably, for only $50 (a very reasonable price under the circumstances), you could buy a full deck of the production-release cards (plus enough land duplicates to be useful). Not the 'alpha' or 'beta' sets exactly, but what eventually became the first full production run.

I rather randomly stumbled on a YT channel this morning where a collector from back in that day had traded any rares he picked up for 2 booster backs (or one booster pack for a rare), thus ending up now 20ish years later with over $150,000 worth of collectable booster packs. He had created a channel dedicated to opening those packs. I can only assume he was either insane, or else was betting he'd pick up enough higher-cost ancient cards this way to make the value exchange (in opening high-cost unopened booster collectables) worth it. But then, to capitalize on that, he'd have to flood the market and devalue his own stock.

WotC didn't run any ads of their own before that one ran.  WW was a distributor back then, and they had the first .\\tG ad.  WotC started running ads around the time Legends was released.

I used to frequent Wargames West in the mid to late 80's. It was my second home when I was a teenager, whiling away many weekend hours in the back game room. I worked for their warehouse for a couple of years back in the early 90's--a few years before Magic: The Gathering craze hit.

Good memories. Thanks for posting!

Hey, the digital Great Battles (of antiquity) series! Available in modern times at GoG, as I recall.  O0

I haven't played Great Battles of Hannibal yet. Of the other two, I think I liked Alexander more due to what felt like more varied battles. Caesar scenarios tended to become epic slugging matches, which were fun and historically accurate but could get repetitive.

I got Alexander from an uncle, who knew I liked strategy games, though was a bit too young to appreciate it fully at first. I remember sitting in his living room and playing Alexander when one of my cousins in her "horses are awesome" phase came in and gasped at the dead horses on the battlefield (the dead hoplites were seemingly not a problem). I removed them, clever of the designers to include a more family friendly option to remove the dead bodies. Well, it also removed clutter, maybe that was the real reason the feature was added.

The North vs. South Civil War spin-off (albeit by the series' designer) was mediocre, particularly considering that the excellent Grant, Lee, Sherman: Civil War Generals 2 had already been released two years earlier.

It might be typical for my "generation" of wargamers that I only found out a few minutes ago that the series was actually based on board wargames by GMT. I thought they were inspired by, not actual adaptions of, board wargames. For a number of series, I've only played the computer versions of the wargames in that series.

I liked the opening theme from Caesar so much that I listened to it for half an hour or maybe even an hour at some point (which I believe required shutting down and starting the game as it didn't loop IIRC, or maybe it only required starting a scenario and going back to the main menu). Those blasting trumpets and the booming score were one minute of epic.

Man, does that bring back memories. The battle themes were simple but effective, some quality sound design there.

I've only played the LBB version of Traveller. I have the new Mongoose edition but have yet to play it. I don't know much about Traveller 2300 but I do know a lot people didn't like it.

It was very different from regular Traveller, and misbranded such that a lot of people mistook it for a prequel or reboot. It's really quite a neat setting in its own way, more hard sf than Traveller tends to be.
