Cruising around the Facebook and I discover that he and his wife both passed?
Mind officially blown.
Fellow cheesehead at that...
R.I.P.
holy shit
WHAT?!? When how? :o
WHAT!?!?! :'(
Holy Crap...you gotta be kidding! :o
I was really dreading hearing this news.
James randomly stopped returning our emails at the beginning of January, and I didn't have any other way of getting in touch.
He will be sorely missed.
Per Facebook, the circumstances are most bizarre. I will not speculate, but his sister-in-law posted of his passing January 18.
Terrible news. :'(
That's a shame. He always struck me as a class act.
Damn. Very sad news. RIP, Jim.

What awful news. RIP Jim.
Sad too.
Some of his articles for us here

One of the best wargame reviewers of all time.
May God have mercy on his soul.
My condolences to all who knew Jim, God bless him.

My condolences to his family and friends.
Very sad. I enjoyed his reviews.
My sympathies to the family for losing both.
:'( Bismarck?!
Oh no.
RIP
RIP Jim and Angela
Terrible news! Rest in peace, Jim. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Angela. Hopefully she will recover.
Agree totally with the above. Prayers for the family. Tragic.
RIP :'(

Unfortunately it appears so. Look at the last post in the Facebook screenshot in Reply #10 in this thread.
RIP
Jesus. Sorry to hear that. RIP Jim always read your stuff.
RIP Mr. & Mrs. Cobb
Goodbye Jim.
May you and Angela soar far and free now that the terrible burdens life placed upon you have fallen away.
This is really sad news. I loved his reviews all the way back from the days of Computer Gaming World.

Me too. The first time I talked to Jim online it felt like meeting a gaming celebrity, where you say stuff like "I've read all your reviews". He will be missed.
I heard back from their kids after pointing them to this thread

Thanks so much for sharing. We're all heartbroken
Please let the grogheads know Jim & Angie's passing was caused by the flu.
The flu!! Man. 10-12 years ago Cobb gave me some really great advice on writing/reviewing and was very welcoming when I joined the staff at Wargamer. I will always remember him fondly.
The flu.....man, you hear about what a bad flu season it has been but this makes it hit home. God bless their kids and loved ones, this has to be so hard....
Does anyone here know how old they were.

I think Jim was in his late 60s.

I used to send him e-mails, him and Bill Trotter, back in the old days. And they both would always respond to me. Me asking about silly things like Strategic WWII games one day coming out, or if someone would make a good operational level game.
The guy never once flinched from talking to an eager, weird pimple faced weirdo like me in 1998.
Feels weird in this world where everything is closer together, where my wife is a well paid reviewer under a pseudonym. Feels very weird. I'm sorry he's gone.
RIP Bismark (Jim) ...so i remember him from my first days as still a shy (language barrier) lurker over at Wargamer
Really sad to read this news. Rest in peace.
RIP, hopefully they weren't one of the people that couldn't afford the medicine. This round seems to be taking a lot of people!
I did not know him. But I certainly knew his name and respected it.
RIP both.
I have to say it really took me by surprise. I always got a kick outta Jim - sent him a couple of games on one occasion and he was a grateful and witty guy. I noticed in the Facebook posting that he and his wife were born 4 days apart and died 4 days apart.
Great guy and he will be missed!

That's too young, my Dad passed at 67, didn't even get to enjoy retirement.
I was surprised & sorry to hear this news. I always read his reviews and usually found if Jim liked the game, I'd like the game.
He'll be missed by the community.
RIP Bismarck.
RIP
really sad news :(
How terrible. I'm very sorry to hear of Jim and Angela's death. :'(
RIP. :'(
RIP Mr and Mrs Cobb.
Man part of my childhood just passed. I can't tell you how important Computer Gaming World was to a city kid moves to the middle of no where Nebraska. Always loved reading his articles. Rest in Peace Jim.

+1. Well done Brant.
Touching write-up for a guy who well deserved it. We often never realize the giants among us until they're gone.
Very well done Brant.
^ +1, an excellent tribute.
thx guys - he's a tough man to encapsulate, and I didn't just want a traditional obituary
Nice job!
^+100
Nice job. :)
That was a wonderful tribute to a great person. That's the first time that I ever read anything on the front page.
RIP
Very sad news indeed. RIP Dr and Mrs Cobb.
Thanks for posting that Brant, I thought I knew Jim from Armchair General. I was really looking forward to his write up on some projects going - mainly because his feedback was concise but also detailed.
I know a lot of guys who knew Jim in real life, although unfortunately I never had that opportunity.
It is a big loss for wargaming; although I am sure it is far bigger for their families.
Nicely written.
thx
Brant, I've been out of town for a couple of days and only now got to read this. Very well done, my friend.
Poignant article, Brant.
Sad news of Cobb's passing. Like most people in the public eye that we admire and respect, he was immortal in our mind.
Groggy
Well done, Brant.
RIP. Such sad news...

Makes me feel a bit worse that we were so close geographically and I never met him.
And I doubt he would have liked "Pickelhaube" being translated as "spike".
Thank you for posting that, Cyrano.
Yes, thank you.
Thank you for posting, Cyrano.
He was a great contributor to our hobby. The passing of him and his wife is sad indeed. Thank you Brant for the great obituary for GH.

Based on SIL's info, I found Cobb's obit in the Odessa, MO paper, but they don't make them available online - you have to order a paper copy.
Damn. Influenza got both of them. :(
The Flu is not to be futzed around with, particularly this year's. I got the Flu Vaccine every year for free as a nurse and when I retired I thought I probably no longer needed it so I passed on it. That year I got a case of the Flu so bad I wanted to die. I was sick for about 2 weeks. To make matters worse, my doctor gave me Codeine for my coughing and it apparently makes me crazy as a Shit-House Rat. :idiot2: Sometimes a Flu bug will hit you all at once with a high fever and body aches but be gone in a day or two. Other times it's less acute but causes a lot more respiratory problems-- thems the ones you got to watch out for. And the over-the-counter stuff will only help so much usually.
I got this back from Cobb's sister-in-law after sending them the link to the article & thread over here at GH
QuoteThank you so much for sharing this beautiful tribute for Jim. Andrew & I both appreciate you & all the grogheads

This is very tragic. :( RIP Jim and Angela. I greatly admired Jim's work, and he was an inspiration.
