Title: Revisiting Grand Theft Auto V
Post by: Jarhead0331 on January 02, 2019, 10:11:05 AM
GTA V came out in 2015 and it is a game that I periodically go back to, usually on PC. I'll play it for hours in spurts, and to be honest it never gets old. The game is a remarkable accomplishment. The world of Los Santos is so alive and diverse. The variety of people, objects, vehicles, locations, activities and the way the world reacts to the player is truly impressive. The scripting and voice acting is AAA across the board and there are so many times I find myself laughing out loud. The story line and the situations that the characters get into are over-the-top, but still totally believable and relatable. I'm really hard pressed to say anything negative about the title, and there are very few games I can say that about. It is so rare that a game lets the player explore the game universe freely, in a way that the player wants to, and then experience the manner in which the play style impacts the world and has consequences.

Even more impressive is the state of mods for the game. There are literally thousands of them. My favorite is called LSPD: First Response and it essentially turns GTAV into the best police simulator on the commercial market. Pick your department or agency, your uniform, vehicle, loadout, and then hit the streets. Perform traffic control duties. Pull people over, issue tickets, administer breathalyzer tests, issue citations, collect evidence, make arrests, go to court, call for backup, etc. etc. There is just sooooooo much to do. On top of the base system, add new vehicles, weapons, gear and outfits. The amount of things you can do with the mod are nearly limitless. Its just so damn impressive in every way. For a very brief period of time last year, the mods were shut down by Rockstar, or its parent company, but this was due to a potential exploit the mod software permitted with the MP system and a potential for malicious attacks on user accounts. However, Rockstar worked with the modders, worked out a solution to the problem and then permitted the mods to be re-released to the community. How many developers will do something like that?

Anyway, I know GTA isn't everyone's bag around here, but really...its frequently on sale and really should be experienced.

I give it my highest recommendation without any reservation.

I have never played a GTA title. But for that LSPD mod alone it sounds to be worth getting.

I picked it up on sale 3-4 months ago but still haven't played it much.  Took quite a bit of fiddling to remap all the controls for lefty types (enough buttons to rival a flight sim in this game!).  I occasionally fire it up, get frustrated with all the time it takes to log in, then I forget what I mapped the controls to and I go play something else.

Funny you bring this up.
I was just thinking about GTA V the otherday when playing RDR2. These two games are just so vibrant, so polished, so full of remarkable characters and little stories and so damn fun!
When I finish RDR's campaign I am likely going back to GTA to replay its campaign again.
I play them on PS4, so I miss out on the mods, but I don't really care; the stock games are just that great!

^Hehe...they are an acquired taste, but I generally prefer these kinds of games with them.

This time around, i have been playing with mouse and keyboard...with the LSPD mod, there are just too many keys.

That's funny, I am the opposite nowadays....although it may not offer the same precision, I find myself mostly playing games with gamepads...too much work setting up joysticks and keyboards:)

Thanks for the link.  I bought the game through Steam.  It is still installing / upgrading.  I found a lot of cool videos.  Some made by "First thirty minutes" are really good.  I think after the base game is done upgrading and can be launched I need Rage Hook and LSPDFR 0.3?   But I have also read that 0.4 should be out soonish?  Not sure if it would be better to wait.

Then there seems to be a confusing amount of plugins / call outs etc.  A plugin and call out are the same thing I think?  Do players here use these and if so which ones are recommended?

there are basically three different types of mods for LSPD...plugins, scripts and then add-on type mods, such as new vehicles, weapons, uniforms, objects, etc.

Call-outs fall into the plugin category. Call-outs are simply events that occur while you are on duty. So you may receive a call to respond to a bank robbery, or a drug transaction, or to apprehend a known/wanted individual, etc. Plugins are very easy to install and do not need any software outside of the Ragehook program and LSPDFR. Scripts require the ScriptHook software and the add-on mods get a little more complicated, requiring a whole different set of software to access the code and essentially insert these objects into the game. Its not too hard and there is a lot of knowledge and guidance out there. Just start with getting the basic LSPD mod running. Once you have it working, let me know. I will then post a list of my must have plugins, which in addition to call-outs include some very useful functionality. Stuff the adds detail and complexity to your policing activities and technology. I'll also give you a list of plugins that add realism and some quality of life stuff too.

JH, that mod looks incredible. I might just have to reinstall V. I played a bit of multiplayer until the hackers became unbearable and very little of the Story mode. It doesn't help when I can't stand the main protagonist, any of them. Nick (?) is a tool from what I seen early and the other guy I just cannot handle the street jive mumbo jumbo for more than a few minutes. And that son? There isn't a military school brutal enough to flail that little schmuck into shape.

But this. This looks good. Is it a Workshop mod or nexus? Since I don't have the game installed mods arent showing up in the Workshop and, if I remember correctly, Rockstar removed modding which is why I quit and never came back. Are they reinstated?

Thanks

PS. I'd love to have a call to where a protest turns into a riot where the extreme left and extreme right are making hamburger out of each other. Someone has to do ammo drops for the betterment of the rest of us here in San Andreas. If only...

This is seriously cool. I'm not much of a general gamer but the GTA series seemed particularly uninteresting - why run around being as ass-hole - hard pass. But if you could run around in the chaos trying to rain it in. Cool!
Still not likely to try it but really cool that you guys are sharing - thanks.

I always found that one of the great things about the GTA series is that you do not have to run around being an "asshole" in order to get enjoyment out of the game. You can really play these games the way you want to and the world around you will react accordingly.

SHOTS FIRED!!!  There is a cool plugin Vocal Dispatch that allows you to have limited verbal radio traffic with dispatch through the mic on your PC headset.  The phrase "Shots fired" is one of the the things the plugin understands that will get backup rolling code 3 to your location.  Very cool.

R/O was on routine patrol in the Chamberlain Hills neighborhood of Los Santos when multiple loud reports were heard.  The back window of the squad car was shattered.  R/O tactically re-positioned his vehicle in a nearby parking lot (floored it actually  :) )  and notified dispatch.  Three armed, suspected gang members exited a SUV and engaged R/O.  Upon the arrival of backup units one suspect was KIA and the others fled southbound on foot.  Referred to gang unit 3 Henry 10.

Via the Vocal Dispatch plugin air support can also be requested which is very useful for pursuits.  Looks really cool at night with the spot light following the car/suspects.  I keep forgetting to grab a screenshot of helicopter support at night (always to busy :) ).

I haven't place GTA since the one based in the eighties.  This mod might just make me buy this.

Great shots Mos!

I check every day for more of these.  :bd:

MOS, if you're having trouble catching screenshots, try using a screen-capture video program (like NVidia's free Shadowplay), and then go back with Windows Media player or something like that to snap shots at will.

Spend the weekend installing GTA V with a large number of mods only to find today that :

LSPDFR 0.4 - Now Available.

https://www.lcpdfr.com/forums/topic/89621-lspdfr-04-now-available/

Attention : most of the other mods (https://www.lcpdfr.com/downloads/gta5mods/essential-mods/) don't work with 0.4 yet.

Keep meaning to play more of this; thanks for the LSPD stuff as it's a nice spring-board to all the other mods that are out there.  Zombies?  Oh yeah!

I used the auto installer and it deletes version .3 as part of the process. It appears all of my plugins are in fact broken now as expected, however, it also looks like a bunch of them have already been updated. With the new functionality of the mod, some of the old plugins might not be necessary.

Anyway, didn't play much, but I did create my character which was pretty cool. Lots of options...you even get to pick your ethnicity and base physical characteristics by selecting your mom and dad...crazy detail for a game like this. Very eager to dive in and see what else the new version has to offer.
