Title: Whilst I was working on my P-51
Post by: JudgeDredd on March 25, 2018, 03:16:21 PM
So as I had the kit out to make the Airfix P-51D, I decided I might as well carry on with one which I had started over two years ago ( :o ) my Revell 1/72 P-47D Thunderbolt

Have you tried AK Interactive's Xtreme Metal paints?  I've got a few bottles that I'm using (no airbrush though) and they're very impressive.  Might want to have a look if you're going for an aluminium finish.

Yeah - never done that.

From what I've seen of people doing cars, they put a black gloss coat on first. I wasn't sure if I had to do that with aircraft so I didn't bother.

It's done. I do love me a P-47

Not my best...but in my defence, my bad eyes and shaky, huge hands find it really difficult to do 1/72

A couple of things I did wrong...

Well, if you don't want it, I'll take it! :)

I hear you on the scale, though. Back in my modelling days 1/48 was THE scale for WW2 planes, especially fighters.

It's on the shelf now...until I get a 1/48 version.

I don't know if it's 1/72 in general, or whether it's certain kits, but they're not just fiddly because of the size - but they're fiddly because often there's no "anchor" points for the fiddly bits like undercarriage doors for example, or the drop tanks. The drop tanks on this thing had ridiculously small pins to anchor them to the wings and fuselage.

Same for the undercarriage doors. The ones on this kit. They came as one piece and had to be cut into 3 sections. 2 sections connected to the wheel by ONE anchor point each - a terrible time was had trying to fit them and the eagle eyed of you may notice that the lower part of the undercarriage doors are not attached to the wheel...I simply could not work out how they were meant to be attached.

I find older Airfix kits (they're making new moulds and I don't know what they're like) and Revell kits to be terrible for the lack of anchor points for fiddly little fittings.

I absolutely do not like 1/72. They're quick to fire out, but they need a shed load of work.

All done - wash and all.

Now I can move onto something with a bit more substance. I'm defo going to get a 1/48 scale of these bad boys

P-47  :smitten:

I thought the P-47M was supposed to have that raised 'fin' running down the dorsal part of the tail, from the vert-stab.  Looks like your model is a P-47D..?

I hate you nerds  :smitten: :smitten:

It was meant to. Do you see the little white mark between the tail and the canopy? I put the "aerial" in the wrong place so I couldn't put the fin on. As it happens, the aerial broke off anyway (hence the white mark).

Good spot.
