I have three WW1 games on my wish list at the moment. All of them I'm excited aboutt. In no particular order there is..

1. Red Poppies Campaigns: Ypres.

I was interested in this game when it was plain old Red Poppies released by Worthington Games. However now it has a campaign system and seems much improved in gameplay and visually. The maps look lovely.

Some play testing reports going on at Consim...

2. The Great War.

Richard Borg's latest offering using modified Command and Colours system.

3. Great War Commander.

WW1 version of the very popular Combat Commander games.

All these games can be played solo after doing some enquires.

Landships! is a pretty nifty tactical WWI game that can be had for fairly cheap:

Combat Commander: WWI sounds interesting.

'Der Weltkrieg' series is worth a look as well.

Good Morning,

Just some thoughts:

"1914:Twilight in the East," is IMHO one of the best WW1 games out there.

  "Der Weltkrieg" is awesome.

Also check out "Marne" and "Somme 1918" by Nuts publishing.

  "Strafexpedition," is also good.

If you can find a copy of it the old SPI "Great War in the East," is an easy and elegant system.

I had the old "Red Poppies," and didn't care for it. I prefer the "Infantry Attacks" series or even the old SPI "Soldiers" is still good, if very outdated graphics-wise.

Paul take a look at the new Red Poppies...lots of improvements and is looking pretty darn good.

Excellent, last I heard was Worthington had pretty much given up on Red Poppies. Really pleased to see they are with a new publisher and continuing, I really enjoyed Red Poppies but it does feel a bit limited.

Very interested in Great War Commander too.

I had a look at "The Great War" at the recent UK Games Expo and it does look really nice. I've just come to the conclusion that the C&C system isn't my favourite, it's fun for some 2 player gaming but I play a lot of solo gaming and whilst it works it just doesn't hold my interest. Still...WWI so I may end up getting it.

Good thing about Compass Games is it will be quality components. The new Red Poppies maps look like a work of art..similar to Bloody April map.

Yeah I'm tempted to preorder but import costs and postage will no doubt make it more expensive than just waiting for retail.

Not so keen on the counters though, but then they were not great in the first game.

Ditto. We have the added difficulty factor here in Switzerland that we seem to have no wargame retailer in the entire country. I think that's going to make it pretty dang hard for newer games to make the "buy" list. I'd be moderately interested in a new Red Poppies, but not enough to pay a premium price.

Sounds like a business opportunity....  ;)

Ha! Yeah, but I think by definition one would have to have customers to have a business! There are definitely some wargamers here, but I think the population is very small. Doing business Europe-wide would not be an option really--it's just too expensive to do business here and European customers wouldn't want to pay the customs (which I totally understand).

Now that I'm here I do understand the laments I've heard from European wargamers on the forums. I would guess my purchases will go from around ten new games a year down to one or two--and I'll probably get those at the German game convention Hexacon to save postage and customs. I love gaming, but I just can't quite wrap my head around paying almost double the cost (in dollars) for games.

We up here in Canada get nailed with high shipping costs from the US as well. Sometimes it doubles the cost of the game. And most times you have to spend time to convince the shipper NOT to us UPS and just use USPS. UPS charges HUGH fees or customs importing...  >:(
