Title: [Android] Fall of Normandy
Post by: spelk on January 30, 2013, 07:24:28 AM
I've mentioned Joni Nuutinen's wargames on the Android platform before, but I thought rather than just generalisms, I'd show you a point in my Fall of Normandy campaign, turn 33, when I play the Axis trying to prevent the Normandy landings breakout.

Here's the status of Turn 33

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi139.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq297%2FspelkUK%2Ffall-of-normandy-campaign-status_zps0a9c2145.jpg&hash=2191f79d4c6bad6fb0a8028a5bf87ac8217de65e)

It assess the VP's changed since last turn, any skills my troops have gained during the last turn, along with resting troops, the new resources available to me and any in danger encircled units. It's very wordy but after a few turns you begin to take in the structure and you can assimilate the nuggets of info swiftly.

Here's the full map of the area on Turn 33

As you can quickly see, I've managed to smother the British/Canadian beachheads around Gold, Sword and Juno beaches. But the Americans are desperately pushing inland and I'm having trouble containing them. I think I've pushed too much armour towards the British landings and my infantry trying to contain the American Armour is having a rough time of it.

Here is Sword beach

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi139.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq297%2FspelkUK%2Ffall-of-normandy-sword-beach_zps4503a9cc.jpg&hash=cb6ee7ee2ce48c49f9f77a93693870bc122f4a16)

I have Armour, SS divisions and extensive minefields holding the British invasion back, I've swamped Sword beach, but am trying to edge my way west along the coast to take the other beaches.

My push to Gold beach has been thwarted a little, by a breakout.

The boxes in the bottom left hand corner indicate unit strength, as you can see most of my units have had a rough time of it!

The damage around the incursion from Omaha and Utah is plain to see.

I simply don't know how I'm going to contain them. Slowly yomping fresh troops in, but the tide of armour is just rolling over them. My hope is that I can sweep the British Beaches clean and push in westwards behind the Yanks. Cut them off from their supplies. Its a bit of a long shot though.

Here are some resources available to me

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi139.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq297%2FspelkUK%2Ffall-of-normandy-resources_zps8cce1d5a.jpg&hash=897b08d41e780d7059f8fb8ee44bd966ad8fcf68)

Every turn you get some resources, so theres always some addictive jiggery pokery you can do for some troops to salvage a bad situation. Its one of the main draws of the game, it evolves all the time. Troops also get experience out in the field, and become better in some area, defense or offence or you can bestow some Anti Aircraft units on them to prevent air bombardment sucking up all the Movement points!

Heres the stats on how its going in graph form

And if you want it theres an extensive unit list to peruse over to check situations and skills acquired

Overall theres a hell of a lot to do in each turn, and the constant re-inforcements and skill additions along with environmental changes, weather, air bombardment, means the front is always shifting and changing. Very moorish for someone who likes chit shuffling under evolving battle conditions.

There, the beauty of the Conflict series of wargames on display. And this dev does a lot of different theatres and eras using a similar engine. Top stuff. Now when is he going to lay down a North Africa campaign game for me!!!

Thanks. I keep looking at games from this dev and wonder how they play. This one does look good.

Have you done this review on a tablet or mobile phone?

Cheers  :)

They play very straightforward. The number of blue pips top left show the movement points, move into an enemy hex to attack. Attack is resolved based on strengths and supports and defence, result is displayed in a popup box. Effects and Skills show up on the chit itself. It's a true chit shuffler, just pushing them about a map. Chits stack in a "square" hex, and you can have many - so tapping on the hex rotates through them all. But usually if you're stacking, you're defending.

These shots are from my Nexus 7 tablet. I haven't tried playing them on a phone.

However, you can zoom the chits up in the games settings - even sizing text, so I'd wager they'd play ok on a smaller device.
