Title: Oh FRIDAY
Post by: Jarhead0331 on February 01, 2019, 12:50:58 AM

Enjoy the weekend everyone...not sure what I'll be playing, but probably some Destiny 2 on PC and maybe some more Battle fleet Gothic II?

Wife and daughter heading Saturday for a ghost hunting expedition so will have the house to myself. Will be smoking a couple of pork butts for the Elks Lodge Super Bowl viewing party but the rest of the day will be mine to play. Besides answering PBEM turns i think it will be a host of different games. So many calling for my attention that I can't say where I'll land.

After traveling most of the week I will be playing lots. Just not sure what. Also plan to get some board game time in with my kids.

If and when I can play, I'll be giving New World Interactive's games most of my attention: Insurgency, Day of Infamy, & Insurgency: Sandstorm are my current go-to's.  Finding the pace of play to be a fun thing to get used to coming off of RS2.

And rubbing my hands delightedly for the upcoming Beta test for Division 2 next week!

Wheee!

Finished Wolfenstein: The New Colossus so may start The Saboteur. Continuing my Order of Battle - Winter War campaign. Will also continue Wings of Prey tutorials, this weekend with my old Thrustmaster joystick set up. I've also become a little interested in The Division...anyone here play it solo?

Oh and I also bought an old copy of Secret Weapons Over Normandy. I will hopefully be able to fire that up this weekend too.

Enjoy the weekend all!

Yup.  Over 200hrs. in and 16K killed per the Ubisoft app. (I just loathe Cleaners and just do laps in some areas shooting the bastards) and pretty much all of that was solo.

I suck for gear builds and all the nuts-n-bolts stuff that make you a "L33T," playa - and I don't care.  Obsessing over that stuff is similar to those that min/maxed Feats and whatnot in D&D 3rd Edition and that ain't my bag.  However, I get my ass handed to me in the Dark Zone by those that do know these things on a regular basis, so... :P

Not sure what if any game I am playing this weekend, have set aside to (again) binge watch Generation Kill instead  :smitten:

Finishing watching Punisher Season 3 on Netflix with my lady, playing some HOI 4 (hope they release the DLC soon, I hate the current naval combat), reading some pen & paper roleplay stuff, recording some music at home, playing my guitars and checking out a new music recording app.

After surviving the Polar Vortex I am ready to get outside for a walk this weekend. Probably at a local park or recreation area. Maybe some flight training in FS2004 and reading about weight and balance. Hoping for good commercials in the Super Bowl.

Warframe baby!
Project Hospital - I picked this up on a whim.  Not bad so far.  A few niggling issues but it's a very comprehensive hospital management sim.
I'll also try the Anthem demo this weekend.

THE NIECES VISIT TOMORROW MORNING!!  <:-)

Probably some gaming, too. I've been spending a lot of my free gaming time on AoW:SM, having lightly hacked the game into creating characters using niece photos for the wizard portraits. (Not sure I'll get to show that off tomorrow.) Will probably continue until I can finish off their campaign.

Elsewhether, the Grogpublic umping continues. And provisionally, tomorrow night I'll be finishing up helping manage a British vs Zulu battle for Cyrano's Friday Night Fights.

I'm also looking to get back into actually flying my beloved 1941 He-111 in IL-2 Battle of Moscow, probably via the dynamic campaign (restarted). Then I'll be able to return to flying with Tuna in dynamic multiplayer mission generators. (Being shot down over stomach flu has added too much verisimilitude to being unable to reliably fly!!)

Recently picked up the release Alpha of Volcanoids, which I've had some fun messing around with. May get to show that to the nieces, unsure. (Think the drill mole from Edgar Rice Bouroughs Pellucidar series, i.e. At the Earth's Core, as a mobile base on an island that detonates volcanically every 20 minutes, in a Verne-ish Steampunk milieu.)

Thanks Carl. I am thinking of getting the original Division this weekend...I was originally turned off by it, thinking it was not solo play friendly. But I've done some interwebs research and it does indeed look friendly for people who hate other people, like me. 200 hours in sounds pretty friendly as well.

Yeah it's definitely soloable.  I occasionally teamed up with some guy from the Netherlands but besides that I did all of it solo.

Yes.  Underground, Last Stand and Survival per the Year One Pass.

Underground is nice as you can make your mission as simple or complicated as you wish - the exact terminology and specifics of this escapes me at the moment - and then execute the mission.  If you die during the mission, you start back at your last auto-save point.  Hunters (big, bad monster men basically) lurk down there and they have the ability to mess you up quick and in a hurry but thankfully they don't show up every mission.  It's a dungeon crawl for the most part,  but with guns.  Have not done so, but I think you can pair up with people to complete a mission and the difficulty will be scaled accordingly.

Last Stand and Survival I've not done yet, but YouTube offers up the goods on those modes - same goes for Underground too, of course.  Survival looks like some good, smart fun, tbh.

I'm curious as to how they do DLC for Division 2.

After a snafu with USPS, I finally got my replacement Track IR pro clip. With that I'll probably be simming most of the weekend. Want to jump back into some Elite Dangerous. I'll probably take one of my planes out in Prepra3d as well.

With all the talk of The Division I might jump back into that. Since I discontinued my WoW subscription I've been looking for something to have something mindless to play.

Tomorrow night is p&p D&D with the crew.  We are starting a new campaign and we are getting the characters together: backstory, history, all that mess.  We'll meet once a month, so, I'll have until March to get the initial encounters ready.  Can't wait.

Digitally, it'll be Civ IV:BtS tonight.  I am Lincoln against Gilgamesh, Shaka, Montezuma, & Zara Yaqob (vassal of Gilgamesh).  I am at the top of the board, but, Gilgamesh is right behind me.  Shaka & me are racing to Combustion whilst I build a modern navy to keep Shaka on his own shores.

And GO PATS!!!

Got Secret Weapons Over Normandy and installing now...fingers crossed.

Also getting The Division Gold...for 9 dollah from the UPlay store. I have finally been able to wait long enough to get the discounts I always pine for.

Friends and brothers, let me give a witness! \o/ \o/ \o/

People have sometimes said I am a fool for paying premium money for nearly 20 years to Falcon Northwest for asskicking computer systems. But I don't only do it for the asskicking systems: I also do it for the asskicking technical support. The main drawback being that, naturally, their staff to product ratio tends to be low, so when I called them last night it was a little too late to reasonably expect a callback.

For the past two weeks, my bootup on my main house computer ("The Presence") has been acting screwier and screwier, until last night it would simply go into a loop toward the end of bootup and never finish booting at all. It was super weird, in that it would pretend I didn't have internet even though I did; and it wouldn't allow me to run Avast to setup a boot-time (or any other) virus scan. Naturally I suspected a virus, but I needed to figure out how to get into safe mode. (The Asus bios from 6 years ago doesn't make that easy; not FNW's fault but still a thing.)

This afternoon, shortly after 12:30 local, tech support got in touch, and together we hunted down the problem -- a true mystery for the symptoms, but at last the culprit showed its retarded goofball colors...

...Avast Cleanup Premium.  :pullhair:

I've never had one problem from their antivirus (aside from bugging me to buy their other stuff, which I tolerate with much eyerolling), but this is twice now, in four or five years, that they have sold me a "cleanup" program that broke my operating system. Just after its 30 day warranty had expired, too.  >:(

I doubt I'll be able to get my money back, but I will damn well make sure to tell as many as I can about AVOIDING THAT [redacted]ING THING LIKE A PLAGUE! -- because that's what it acts like, a virus. It even goes so far (perhaps accidentally but who knows) as to resist being uninstalled by the control panel uninstaller.

On the other hand, FNW continues to earn my money and evangelical promotions.  :smitten: O:-) :smitten: O:-) :smitten: 6 years and a little over one month, still running any program I want fine (after a gfx card upgrade last summer to a 1080ti). The Presence continues. All Hail Falcon Northwest can I get an amen!!  O0

All hail the custom built system  :notworthy:

I've now built three systems, one for my self, and for both my kids. First: the Corsair Carbide all-steel full-size case. No wimpy plastics, just awesome matt black finished steel all around. Next time I take it apart for maintenance, I really need to apply a MERDC camo pattern to it...

The oldest one is now over six years old, graphics cards have been updated once, but now there's no way to delay a new CPU. That means a new motherboard and RAM as well, that's just how things work, so not a small investment.

Yet, all other first-rate components remain, a quality power unit, hard and solid state drives.

It costs an extra even when built as a DIY job, that's just how things are, as the computer manufacturers get their components with such a discount. But with some bargain hunting, it's not too bad.

On another note, I gave up on my Bitdefender anti-virus system and reverted back to Microsoft Defender that comes stock with the new W10 OS. Everynow and then I scan my system with Malwarebytes scanner, never had any problems with it.

Finally: installed Talonsoft's Battleground 1: Ardennes to my system with a DOSBOX. Vintage 1995. Wanted to see how it all started with John Tiller and Charles Kibler back in the day. So cool! So that's what I am playing.  :smitten:

Bitdefender is my favorite internet security program to-date...never have had an issue with it and totally non-intrusive. Tried others in the past (i.e. Norton, Kaspersky, etc.) but really have liked Bitdefender the most after using it the last 5+ years.  I do also have Malwarebytes installed, I like that as well.  Just curious what kind of issues did you have with Bitdefender?

My favourite as well, precisely for how non-intrusive it is. Defender is probably the only AV product even more non-intrusive, but it has not done that well in tests. With the latest W10 version, it got better (adequate) results, while I was struggling to tell Bitdefender to not run on the folder where we install our BETA versions of our game. They are straight compiles from MS Studio, shared via Dropbox, so they do not have the certificate that the commercial products have. It got quite frustrating to install the latest game betas, and to then notice Bitdefender had quarantined them, and it was not most obvious how to have them back either.

So probably something I could have solved over time, but I just lost patience with it. For any "normal" computer use I too recommend Bitdefender, not a bad price as a family pack for everyone in the house, either.

Gotcha, I use MS Studio as well and largely non issue for me compiling my stuff after I added the folder/files to the exclusion list.  In the latest version of Bitdefender, you just need to go to the menu Protection->Anti Virus->Quarantine to return the files back if for whatever reason they do get quarantined (although doesn't happen to me after excluded).  Also when I was looking at test results from the independent labs, it rated just as high as the other top vendors but maybe just depends what testing info your looking at.  In the end doesn't matter, everyone likes whatever they like and no problem with that:)

Obsessively playing new Insurgency. I kinda love it.

Also applied to do a Masters of teaching, with my skills, I could teach biology and chemistry, and if I pass the TESOL, I could also be qualified to teach Russian and French.

Food wise, getting into Indian desserts, made coconut laddos (little coconut balls with condensed milk, cardamom, rose water, pistachios and almonds) Shrikhand, sweetened greek yogurt with elderflower and raspberry coulis and barfi, and bapa doi, benglali a yogurt and condensed milk pudding with strawberry puree, steamed and left overnight to set.

I have loved my Falcons.  My current Talon is more silent than the ceiling fan.

If you have a happy DIY system - I'm also happy for you.

Very little gaming this weekend.  I finished the writeup for the Gilbert & Marshall Islands raid and posted on my blog.  I played the Coral Sea scenario in OOB: WW2 US Navy campaign and made > 100 screenshots.  Coral Sea is the hardest scenario in the campaign and is also played on the biggest map.  It is the scenario that I'm most likely to lose every single time I play it.

The AI runs different setups on the scenario.  This time they only had two fleet carriers and the baby flattop.  The AI also had a carrier within striking distance of Tugulai which I've never had before.

As usual, the "blocking force" around Port Morsby was sent to the bottom.  But they did sink the troop transports without needing air strikes from the Yorktown which was unusual.  That was one of the better "wins" I've had with the blocking force.

I think that if I ran the Japs in the Coral Sea scenario that I could win most every time.  If the Japs take Port Morsby - they win.  Concentrate on taking Port Morsby instead of focusing on hunting for carriers - and you win the scenario.

I liked Elite, except the grind. The lack of a story line to accompany the grind, combined with the frustration of loosing all  materials you have accumulated when you get killed, necessitating restarting the grind from the bottom is really a downer.
