What are you talking about? It's like you could step into your monitor and walk down that street. :D I did have a lot of fun with CMBB back in the day but I can't go back either.
CMBO Was already available on GOG but not the other 2. This is good news for those who miss these Great Old Games, like me. But I'm with Pete, these game look... real... old.
Last year lightning destroyed my old computer and while I waited for a new one, I drug out an ancient one to have SOMETHING to play. And there were my old friends, CMBO,CMBB,CMAK, and I fell in love all over again. But she is a VERY old girlfriend.
I got the Combat Mission Anthology on CD from CDV almost 2 decades ago because I was going to need that for the upcoming Combat Mission Campaigns.

Yes, along with working with GOG for the past few months to get these up I have been trying to get Gamersgate's listings pulled down. Our agreement with them expired years ago.
I kinda agree about the graphics. Tough to look at once you're used to the CMx2 games. While setting things up with GOG I did play more of these games than I played in a very very very long time. I enjoyed it. Kinda the same feeling Sir Slash had.

Ooooh! -- I was hoping Battlefront (though I think it's actually Strategy First exercising their options) would follow up Beyond Overlord with Barbie and Afrika.
Not lying, I bought CMBO on GoG primarily to encourage the release of CMBB and CMAK.
I have all these on CD, couldn't get them to go wide screen last time I tried, or find the no CD patch. I'll probably get these on sale, wonder if all the mods are still available. They didn't look too terrible with the HD textures. There was a lot of value in those packages, still a bunch of content not available on the newer games, scenarios and campaigns wise.

I remember fondly playing CMBB as the Germans and trying to get my panzers to charge to effective range against a KV-2. They just kept taking a shot, popping smoke, and then full reverse to cover. Can't say as I blame them.

at least for cmak it doesn't appear to be the latest patch version..gog has 1.03 where 1.04 is latest. no idea if major difference or not and whether other games are latest. would be interesting to know why the latest isn't available regardless.

Haven't seen them in action, but I don't think they look that bad in the screens. The infantry is a little rough, but the tank models are still pretty nice.
Anyway, CMBB was such a fantastic game and it gave me so many hours of intense pleasure and joy, I just had to get it.

It gives me pause. I looked on BF site and the last patch available there is 103, it is strange that the GOG release isn't 104. I wonder what GOG did to the games, doesn't really give much info. I'll get CMBB and see how it works.

Still square box. Nothing with the code of the game has been touched since the Vista patch.
If my memory is correct, the Vista patch was made specifically for the Vista operating system and was not needed for any other OS. I installed and played all 3 of them on my Windows 10 machine.
I installed CMBB, yea its the box. My current problem is no in game sound, i submitted a ticket to GOG. I seem to remember being able to stretch to full screen, but no matter what settings i try, game config or video card settings can't get it to stretch. There is a utility installed with the game, in the game folder called dxcfg with some settings for display mode, aspect ratio, vsync, AA, AF, scaling, but haven't noticed much of a difference but i'll take a closer look. No matter what i have the black bars on the side, anyone get it to stretch? What i immediately noticed was i really miss mouse zoom. Fog works fine for me, some people seem to have a problem with it. If i can't get the sound to work, i'll refund. Not sure if i'll buy CMAK if i can't get it to stretch, i swear i remember getting it to stretch last time i got it to work from disk.

I still have a nice 4:3 Samsung monitor kicking around. Should do nicely for CMAK.

So far looks like just me, have t been able to find any other info on it. I'm guessing some .dll file thing as the sounds play when I run them. I'll see what GOG gets back to me with on my ticket . I installed through Galaxy , so I'll uninstall and install independently of Galaxy and see what's up.
Thanks for the heads up Grogs! Just bought and installed CMBB - pure nostalgia...Both my CMx2 installs went tits-up some time back (working one day, not the next - tried re-downloading, reinstalling, etc, no result), so this is a real boon. CM is my favourite wargaming system.
CMAK working great on my Win10 laptop. Sound not a problem. Will be interested to see how it goes on my desktop.

My nostalgia feeling is wearing thin :( actually got the sound to work once by right clicking on the shortcut file and checking the box run as administrator. Game started with sound, but closed it down and restarted and haven't heard a thing since and nothing else i have tried has either. I tend to dig in my heels on things like this, spent 2 hours messing with it. GOG hasn't replied yet.
Does Beyond Overlord actually work on a modern machine? I'm running windows 10 on a less than two year old Falcon Talon rig.

Yes, all three GOG versions work fine...my machine is only about a year old.
GOG got back to me, and as soon as i read their message i knew what it was causing the problem. I should of thought of it myself as it had come up before on another old game. I have Sonic Studio installed, program where you can set up audio profiles for programs or games. All the audio on my machine goes through the program for post processing. As soon as i exited the program the sound worked fine. I tried setting up profiles and disabling it but the only thing that worked was shutting it down.Kind of knew with no one else having the problem that it was specific to my machine. I'll go load up the mod manager and start modding the game. I'll probably pick up the other two games also. Kind of forgot how much content was in these games, and the map generator.

I just installed CMAK on a wimpy little ASUS netbook/tablet running Win10 and it seems to run fine. I set the widescreen option and it renders fine, though slightly stretched.
I seem to recall beginning in CMBB there was, 'fire' that could spread across the ground, wheat fields, etc. Can anybody confirm this? The Molotov Cocktails I remember.
FYI. You can quiet down the game menus by deleting or renaming the following files in the WAV folder. Bothering people at work with your game noises is bad form.

On CMBO being playable on a tablet or laptop... I had some trouble with it, although I don't recall what exactly or how I finagled the workaround. (This was last year and I've slept since then.) I was hoping to mp it with someone else to introduce it to them, but we never got around to it, so eventually I uninstalled.
There isn't much reason to get CMBO with all the mods available for CMBB and especially CMAK -- unless you're so desperate for King Tigers in the game that you're willing to drop back a notch in game functionality! (And they've probably been modded in somewhere else by now anyway.)
The random battle generator was the bomb. I am going to buy them - for the 2nd time.
I love the fact you can generate a random map for your random battle. Since I got my sound issue worked out I bought CMAK also. Not going to bother with CMBO as there is an overhaul mod you can load over CMAK for some ETO action. Spend most of my gaming time this weekend adding mods to both games.

One of my best memories of the game is an "Operation Crusader" CMAK multi-player campaign that I ran about 15 years ago.
I used TOAW to track unit locations and order of battle. When battles occurred, as referee I would generate the game start file and then let the players play out the battle in CMAK over the internet. When they finished, I would update the TOAW map and orders of battle.
If I were to do it today, I would use Vassal to track game progress.
With CMAK being so easy to access now, I may start another campaign this summer.
Worth noting that TOAW4 has recently had the infamous North Africa Campaigns board game ported over to it as a module (from TOAW3, updated, as I recall).
Imagine running that game, except resolving some battles in CMAK and altering the game-save file for the results.

That'd be a good game to play if you were stuck on a sub-lightspeed generational colony vessel. You could start turn 1 at lift-off and your great-great-great-great grandkids would get to turn 4 just about the time they drop into orbit around Proxima Centauri B.
Heh! For what it's worth, I'm told that the mod runs a lot faster than that, precisely because it can do a lot of the scutwork under the hood at modern computing speeds.
I'm looking at getting one of these on GOG. For $10, why not.

Combat Mission Afrika Korps is the latest. It has some bells and whistles that CM Barbarossa to Berlin does not have. For example dust clouds. But the differences are probably minor in the long run. It really boils down to if you want Russian Front (CMBB) or the Med (CMAK). Combat Mission Beyond Overloard (CMBO) is the earliest title....and the graphics are much less refined than the later titles.
For my money, CMAK is best

I liked CMBB best. The Axis satellite troops, Russian weather and landscapes, and equipment and battles from 1941 through 1945 sealed the deal for me. The sands of North Africa was less appealing for me.

There a lot more than NA in the CMAK scenario roster. Some nice hilly italian village fights for example.

I liked CMAK too. The Italian fights were fun and who could forget the Aussies and Kiwis included? But nothing compares to fighting your way into the Tractor Factory with your last few rounds of ammo or doing donuts on Hitler's front lawn in a JS-2. :D

Buy CMAK and CMBB instead. I've played a bit of the Close Combat series, but I played countless hours of CMBO, CMBB and CMAK.
I like em so much I just bought CMBB and CMAK again from GOG, and am tempted to get CMBO again just because. $5 a pop is hard to beat.
(Cool side effect, while messing about with graphics settings and reading various posts online about how to get em looking good I came across two pages that had some DirectDraw stuff to run old games on new computers, and using a combo of the two I was more or less able to get the original Steel Beasts (Gold edition) working again. Sort of. Still kind of glitchy but previously I hadn't been able to get it to run at all past the title page. I'm hoping I can figure it out, cause I spent countless hours in the old SB too. I've tried the current version a couple times, but bounced off it for some reason.)
If you buy a Close Combat, buy Close Combat 2.
If you buy a CM, like the others said, that's like two totally different fronts. Had my most legendary drama moments in CMBB, but played countless hours of CMAK too. 50/50...
Worth noting that CMAK has plenty of West Front mods, so it isn't only the Mediterranean areas.
As for the original question: Unless you're super-low on cash, or just want the largest mod roster possible, there's no point getting A Bridge too Far rather than Last Stand Arnhem. (And even then I suspect CC3 has the larger mod list.)
Otherwise it depends a lot on which front or operation you prefer. Panthers in the Fog and Gateway to Caen are both post-Normandy breakout games (going west and east respectively), which don't get simmed a lot.
I don't think there has even been an update to CM4:Battle of the Bulge yet.
CM5:Invasion Normandy was remade as The Longest Day, but it was the first of the series to be remade and it's wonky (which is why it isn't available on GoG yet).
Cross of Iron, on the other hand, was so good that they've never even bothered remaking it, just updating it! It also has, by far, the largest scale of any of the CM games, covering the full East Front war.

Ive been told that Last Stand Arnhem didn't manage to re-enact properly the CC2 campaign module (which is what makes it look so unique among all others in my opinion). Was I wrong to believe that, or?

These are good things, but the latter aspect can be slightly overwhelming to the newcomer. With CMx1, however, the more even balance between playability and simulation make them a great way to get into the series.
And with CMBB you get a huge range of period to experiment with; so, for me, it is probably the best CM title- at least to start with.

The first three Combat Missions were a lot of fun, and were much easier than the newer ones. The newer ones are a lot more accurate depictions of combat - and are thus far, far harder to play and win.
The first one: Beyond Overlord has scenarios that are easy, middle difficult, and hard. The random battle generator can set the force levels to any darn thing you want - really, really easy; easy, even-odds; hard; and a forlorn hope.
If you are interested in playing something you can win (or get a challenge whatever your skill level), the random battle generator is simply the best. :smitten:

I've had no troubles running it on a newish Falcon Northwest Talon running Windows 10. :notworthy:
