I'd forgotten about this.
Very much looking forward to seeing the campaign as it develops.

Ha....first I knew that I had lost the campaign was the appearance of this AAR.....bout typical for the general lack of knowledge/intelligence I had in the whole campaign....one very broken and dissallusioned General Brunswick!

I can't wait to find out myself about the where, what and how of my dimise...I thought I was sitting pretty, but tired, in Leipzig with quite a lot of my boys....shows how little I know....he he!

Great game and I know I shouldn't say it but I would dearly love to do something like this again in the not too distant future if Jim can summon up both the energy and time to do it all again. Thanks for a great gaming experience Jim...very much appreciated indeed.

Andy B (Hatricvs) AKA Brunswick.

To My Lord of Brunswick and all the others I owe a real debt of thanks.  I'll have much more to say (I really always do) in the AARs, but I am grateful for the fun.

And, yes, there will be another.

@Slash -- In a fashion that reminded me much more of Gustavus Adolphus than the Little Corporal, he took a chevauchee up that way looking for Prussians to kill.

Bold, but he swung at air.

So, are the videos being released in real-time to correspond to the pace of the game?  :-"

If you want real-time of the game, you'll need to watch them frame-by-frame.

Are you the kind of kids that read the back of a mystery novel first?

Don't answer that, I suspect I know.

I had no intention of keeping this same pace in subsequent articles -- my latest tranche runs from 13 - 14 and covers seven videos.

Fast enough?

I am pleased that the first article brought at least some interest to the KS as concept and I'd like to keep the ball rolling.

Oh, at @MD: Thanks for the heads-up on the privacy setting.  YouTube gives me the itch some days.

Enjoying watching the videos and reading the usual Grog-banter.  O0  How did Napoleon and his Guard get all by himself so far north?

It was a safe enough move: the Prussians didn't have enough independent cavalry (assuming Cy even allowed them to function in combat as independent brigades) to threaten a crack division; and my cav division could withdraw back faster than Prussians could chase me -- possibly into an ambush, since I would have interior lines naturally.

Bess' cav didn't have any fatigue to speak of so I ambled forward to a junction point to get some news and see what was going on. Despite the video, I didn't doubt the Prussians had recently gone -- I mean, they weren't shooting at me -- but I couldn't understand the timing information I was getting there and elsewhere (by courier), and I wanted to be sure a detachment hadn't slipped past us heading for our backfield. Nor was I going to chase after a corps with one cavalry division! (Comparisons with Adolphus notwithstanding but appreciated.  :coolsmiley: )

Oh, I'm not totally betting that we won. Just as I might have made a small contribution to our win by insisting we not fatigue ourselves, I might have also made a big contribution to our loss by insisting we pace ourselves -- thus running out of time!

But it had to have come down to the wire either way.

...we're the French, trust us, we'd know.  :D
Title: Re: The Endless Kriegspiel, an AAR
Post by: JasonPratt on May 16, 2018, 04:42:27 PM
QuoteNapoleon I himself could never quite figure out where the Prussians were.  He kept punching forward hoping to hit something and never realized just how empty the battle space was.  In the early marches, he failed to catch the divisions guarding the Hof gap and then both Marshals Soult and Ney kept nudging forward along the eastern routes trying to make contact with Hohenlohe's men who scampered as fast as they were able.

True, but (a) they were tiring themselves out; and (b) we weren't (at this point).  >:D

...whether that contributed to our loss or our win, remains to be seen.

There's a real-world reason why we aren't moving faster in the middle, too: it's two days before Christmas 2016 (!!) and I'm not paying much attention to my email.

Quote(Author's Note: I have no idea why I adopted this melodramatic tone.)

Heh, because the action has started.

My compliments again (as I catch up with fog reveal on the videos) to West Wing, doing exactly what they were supposed to do (assuming they found anyone): stake out Erfurt, draw attention westward, and probing for any weakness then using their superior mobility to defeat the Prussians in detail (although the dice should be given some wine for helping, too. But Murat & Company put themselves in place to benefit from any good luck or Prussian bad luck.)

Cheers. I look very much forward to the next episodes and "eye-witness" accounts.

One of the things that's very entertaining, to me, is how little we - well, I, at any rate - understood about Ruchel's defeat.  I spent the entire game unsure how many forces we had trapped - if any!  And I was not certain if they had gotten away, or what.  We were pretty sure we had put Weimar's division to flight, but even there wasn't obvious if that meant "they ran away" or "they were shattered beyond repair" or what.

Likewise, the encounter with Scharnhorst's cavalry left us unsure just how much might be at Weimar.

Like Lannes, I need to get on with it and put up the dispatches - his have made fun reading for me.

There's no way we're letting you not play in this next one. No. Way.

I'd like to register my vote for it being the 1807 Eylau campaign, btw. Because the best way that I can think to make this even more sadistic is to have the campaign happen in the winter.

Title: Re: The Endless Kriegspiel, an AAR

There's no reason Jim can't make up a campaign, either - especially if it makes for enough corps on the two sides to absorb the interested parties.

Those considering taking part, please keep in mind -- it is exceptionally disruptive to have people drop out, or fail to keep messages and decisions flowing in a timely manner.  It's a hell of a lot of fun, but it's important to really commit to sticking it out.

@BC: as if we'd go on without you!

@James:  yes, please.  It's not a threat, but the last one went 18 months.  It's not terribly demanding time wise for the player, but it was the commitment that made this one go.

Definitely a clear win in my book for our opponents and well done to them, and also want to reiterate that I would love to be considered if there is another Kriegspeile coming up. Also Eylau would be great. Can't wait to get the maps, pins and dividers out again to see what can happend when someone else is in command!
