Title: Readers Choice Awards: 2016 AAR of the Year Nominations
Post by: bayonetbrant on February 11, 2016, 04:38:20 PM
Getcher nominations in for AAR of the year!

Tentative rule:  must have at least 5 updates/episodes/posts in the year for which it is nominated

What do you guys think?

@Brant
Yes, I think there has to be some continuity. 5 posts/updates is fair, and not a very high bar to pass. I'll contradict myself now: Does it really matter if there are only say 3 or 4 updates if the AAR is outstanding?

FWIW, I've only read a few AAR's so far this year, so my opinion is based on very limited experience.

One of my favourites is the Barbarossa one between Barthheart and Jason Pratt. Both threads are very well written, with a good sense of humour. So far both are highly entertaining in my opinion. O0

I will second AR's CMANO AAR's.  KyzBP and 'geek's WitPAE AAR is good, too.

Oh hell. This was my idea and now I'm torn between the AAR's already mentioned here. But I gotta stick with my original pick, the WitP AE AAR of Geek and KyzBP. It's not only entertaining but informative and they've both been great at answering dumb questions asked by us. It takes so long to play this game that it could also qualify as last year's and next year's AAR too.  O0

KyzBP's is the most engaging for me.

My criteria is engagement, ease of reading, frequency updates.

This from a guy who replays centuries old battles with little men, following the same paths to victory or not as the generals who fought them to begin with.  Why not just read a history book to see how that worked out?

We have an entire year to fight about this, right?

Also, this is only the nomination phase. Not the voting phase.

Also, I have a MTG AAR for an illegal version of MTG, featuring a sorceress and her red wienies. Here on Grogheads!  O0 (But not applicable since that was last year. Unless I start it up again for 5 posts worth this year. ;) )

Also, I nominate Banzai_Cat's Pool of Radiance AAR (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=14588.0); and Con (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=13096.0) vs. Geek's (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=13090.0) mutually self-destructive "Rolling on the River" Combat Mission Black Sea AAR. Sadly, ineligible.  :'( Although BC might re-elige his.

So since my first two nominations aren't eligible (or one of them at the moment isn't), allow me to nominate Hofstadter's Hitler's Last Gamble (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=15945.0), for ComOps1's Battles from the Bulge, and Crossroad's "West Bank Crossroads" DAR vs Berto (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=15700.0) for Campaign Series Middle East.

My Pool of Radiance AAR is one I want to get back to. I just haven't had the time. Also the FCN AAR. Probably won't finish up the Ottoman Sunset one, unfortunately.

Brant - I haven't done an update for the BofF one I was doing. I assume since you're not asking you don't need it any longer? ;)

Second, it was fun.

Third - my wife says "vote no" because I bought another game.

I HAVE BLOCKED THAT EXPERIENCE FROM MY MEMORY! --

...um, I mean, the game dealt me a toxic hand from which I could never afterward recover.

(And also I tunnel-visioned on Canada like an imbecile; although in the end, even if I had put all those points in West Germ like I should have, I don't know that I could have triggered a Euro autowin in time.So really, I tunnel-visioned too hard on a European autowin. And also on Canada.)

I thought Gstockbridge's AAR covering the British 6th Airborne's landing 'East of the Orne' from Panzer Battles - Normandy was one of the prettiest and well laid out reports I had seen for quite awhile.

He did it completely in Powerpoint and included a heap of additional information including the actual history and his opponents commentary interspersed throughout the action. Add the period photos and it is a very engaging read.

Being extorted by SurveyMonkey last year was a pretty painful experience for us.
