Title: War in the pacific admiral's edition
Post by: The pirate on December 02, 2017, 04:47:19 PM
In War in the Pacific Admiral's edition I have enemy carriers in a position where I can hit them hard from a land airfield. When I attempt to target them I get the message "only LRCAP may target."  Whats up with this? How can I allow my planes to attack?

Hi

Put them on Long Range CAP? Your aircraft may be "setup" for a different kind of mission. For example, if they're setup for CAS, then they can't really go charging after carriers.

Don't take this as gospel. I haven't played the game in any depth and haven't played for a long time - but it strikes me that's what the message is telling you.

Good luck with a proper answer from someone knowledgeable. Also - might be worth asking at Matrix Games - there's a HUGE following for WitP:AE over there.

One other piece of advice - if your username is actually your email address, I'd probably not recommend doing that around the net. Just from programs that farm information. Just as a "just in case".  O0

You can't specifically target enemy TFs. You set some of your planes to "Naval Search" so that they locate the TF, and have other planes set to "Naval Attack" so that they'll sortie once the TF has been located (hopefully appropriate aircraft for each mission: float planes / PBYs for Search; dive bombers and torpedo bombers for Attack).

I think you might get a good answer at the Matrix forum on WITP.

This plus set some fighters to "Escort" or the bombers may not launch if the enemy has a fighter presence.

It has been known to happen, on rare occasions...   ;)

KyzBP's point is a good one.

In terms of setting targets for air sorties -- you can only do this for ground/airfield/port attack missions, LR CAP, or recon, setting a specific hex (within range) to strike. (May well be missing a few other possibilities there, but you get the picture). You *can't* designate an enemy TF at sea as a target for air strike. I believe an enemy TF in a port hex can come under air attack if you designated that hex for Port Attack, but not entirely sure (the strike may just target disbanded ships in the harbor).

The parameters / checks that have to be passed in AE to launch airstrikes are pretty complex. Unit morale, supply, size of airfield, possible overcrowding (airfields as well as aircraft carriers), weather, all that and probably more comes into play. And *coordinating* airstrikes between different squadrons has its own headaches -- good to set striking aircraft and escorts at the same altitude, that sort of thing.

All of which is to say, you can set up everything just right, but there's no 100% guarantee that you'll strike or even locate an enemy TF that you want to hit. Which is as it should be.

I'm sure it was a great answer.  It just seemed asking a technical question like that might get an answer from Matrix devs and their helpers faster.

You're all correct. And to soften stances and satisfy the palette, a round of  Colonel Taylors Single Barrel for everyone.

And so was I. It's all good here. In fact it's the primary reason I started spending my time at Grogs.

We need a show for those who prefer emotionally shallow animals.

^That's good stuff. Pricey, but good.

It is. My wife bought me a bottle and my good friends, the unpaying kind, were helpful enough to drink it for me after I 'went to sleep'.

Sorry fellas.  While we are all adults here, there are no age specific settings to the site and we'd like to keep things PG for that reason.

hope your friends will help with that bottle while you take care of these fine pacific gals after you go to bed...  :coolsmiley:

(oops, forgot the wife-situation... another bummer, i guess...)  :-[

Yes, it took a lot of work to put that together. Thanks for the link, Pirate.

Just in case someone hasn't heard, War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition is on sale at Matrix Games (http://www.matrixgames.com/products/product.asp?gid=351) for $29.99 U.S. until 7 January 2018. That's $50 off the regular price.

Wow.

:o

As if just playing WitP grand campaign isn't time consuming enough. Meticulously documenting every turn as well... Impressive.

I've been giving some serious thought to firing that bad boy back up over the holidays.

I have started this game so many times.  I think I've gotten as far as about 200 or maybe 300 turns in before I get distracted (SQUIRREL!) and if you've played the game you know how hard it is to pick up after you've been away for a month or two.  You completely lose track of what the purpose of that task force was, or why you set it to go where it's going, etc.

I swear, though, like reading Les Miserables, at some point in my life I'm going to sit down and finish this bad boy once and for all.  I personally find it one of the best war games I've ever played, like a dream come true.  It's just so doggone time consuming to actually get anything done.

I like to picture myself sitting on my deck in southern California (or Florida), a cool beer at my side and my laptop in front of me, slowly working my way through this grand campaign, leisurely moving my ships around one turn at a time, no rush, birds chirping and the sounds of waves gently  breaking against the shore in the background.   :dreamer:
