Had always believed the crew planned to go into reverse and set off the charge from about fifty yards away.

During filming of Airplane, Leslie Nielsen used a whoopee cushion to keep the cast off-balance. Hays said that Nielsen "played that thing like a maestro"

Very cool. Reminds me of the movie made a few years back.

I wonder how much tidal movement played a part in the submarine being '300 meters' from the wreck of the ship they sank. I have no clue how that works, but it seems like a rather large distance for a sub that was pretty much done for once the charge went off.

Brought to mind there was an episode on the Hunley's crew in the television show, The Great Adventure.
Did a fair job explaining how it worked.  Jackie Cooper, who played Perry White in the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, was the Confederate captain.
