Title: Mordor: Shadow of War release and reviews
Post by: JasonPratt on October 09, 2017, 07:42:11 AM
Might as well get the party started!  :bd:

Since I don't have the game yet (allowing family to give it on my birthday next month), let me get the party started with news that the true ending is hidden behind an ultra-grindy process that's designed to encourage you to pay more real money in order to reach the true ending!

:hide: :crazy2: :uglystupid2: :tickedoff:

So basically, it's as if Warner Brothers had locked the true Arkham Knight ending behind truly beating the Riddler (which they did, more or less, depending on whether you beat all the other side missions before doing the grand finale to the plot); and then if they had locked truly beating the Riddler behind finishing all his tedious grind crap requiring you to double back repeatedly (ditto, typical for the Riddler in these games); and then made the process of beating the Riddler's grindy things largely dependent on total luck; and then said, "If you ever get tired of this and want to see the true ending to the game, just give us more real money and we'll expedite the process."

I understand, with increasing development budgets AAA games ought to be costing more; and things like this help finance the game. I get that. But holding the game hostage to extort more money rather than just asking for more of the money on the front end, shows total contempt for the audience.

It also makes the developers liars, by the way, since they promised (albeit with some suspicious vaguery here and there) that the in-game store wouldn't be important for winning the game.

I've got it pre-loaded right now.

Doesn't bother me....I bought it to have a little mindless fun slashing and killing things...very rare I complete any of these game anyways (except for Sniper series).  Got my copy for around $30 so minimal investment for some entertainment.  I'll never buy any of the loot (never have in any game) so not a big deal for me.

Not sure how I feel about that. Considering the first game is (and has been) regularly on sale for $5 I can wait. My backlog is hitting legendary status.

I'm a few short.

Never played the series but I have to admit the kill scenes are brutal.

My many years of playing wargames has kept me occupied. It's incredible how many interesting games are out there. I have been in a wargaming slump these past couple years.

The feature that grabbed me immediately with Shadow of War is the sieging and defending of fortresses. As a TW fan forever this immediately moistened my loins. A writer over at RPG is currently complaining about loot boxes but I am a sucker for awesome fantasy sieges. They aren't that common.

I thought we got that whole problem with Mordor thing cleared-up some time ago. I distinctly remember a ring melting in a pool of lava, then everything exploded and some giant Eagles showed-up to rescue everybody. Was that just some bad Bourbon Sushi I had?

Seriously, this game looks great and I never played the first one. Hope it's a winner.  :bd:

Played for a couple of hours. If you liked Shadow of Mordor, this is a no brainer.

Also, Shelob is weirdly...hot...when she's not being all giant spider.

I got bored of Mordor quite quickly. I honestly can't sit here and say that it was the game's fault...I do have a bit of a "shiny new" syndrome.

After reading JP's initial post I found this interesting article on the Rock/Paper/Shotgun site. I don't own the game and never played the original but still found the article interesting and wonder if other new release AAA games will do the same? https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/10/09/do-you-need-loot-boxes-to-complete-shadow-of-wars-final-act/#more-483675

Still waiting (in vain) for other games to copy the nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor but for whatever reason that hasn't happened yet.

But if it is true that you can't finish a full priced game without making micro-transactions, well, suffice it to say it troublesome to think it might catch on with other developers.

I just watched his whole review. He is hilarious and his reactions are exactly what goes on in my head while gaming 99% of the time. Of course now I am not sure if I want to start playing Shadow of War until it is stabilized a little. Screw it, maybe I won't have any issues. It's not like I have that uber NVidia card Angry Joe has.

Yup. Angry Joe is the man.

FWIW, I have a 1080ti and have not had a single CTD in over 10 hours of play. Granted, I have not tried to record or stream through OBS.

^Angry JH just kills everyone.

I played three hours of Shadow of War and did not have one CTD either. Gameplay is repetitive and I did get a little bored, though, I have to admit.

In a good way. Love the baseball music and carnival barking. Hilarious. I watched his whole review also and he certainly has a love/hate for the game. Have you played any more?

Yeah I am about 5 hours in. I am putting together a What's Gus Playing about it for next week. Summary: if I stick to the story based missions it is better for my sanity. There is so much extra content going on beyond the story missions that keeping track of it does drive me almost insane. I think it's more my age than the game design itself. The game also throws a lot of fighting combos at you very quickly and I think it can be a bit overwhelming.

I almost rage quit a couple of times yesterday as things became repetitive, but I stuck with it and it continued to get more awesome.

That said, it drives me nuts that players cannot save anywhere. Big drawback. Not enough to get me to stop playing yet but enough to annoy me.

All that said...I am still playing. I have not got to the army assembly section yet or the besieging...which is what attracted me to the game initially. Hope to get to it soon.

Curse you.  I had planned to stay away from the game but now I'm enticed to buy it.  Maybe I'll wait for the Gusplay.

I've got purchasing fever. I can't seem to find a single GMT COIN game that isn't waiting for a reprint.  Nothing else has caught my fancy lately either.

Ouch. Not very reassuring considering probably less than 10 hours play. The sieges and Nemesis system had me intrigued but you seem to echo some of the most glaring complaints I've read. The repetitiveness causes the most pause for me. And from what I've read YOUR forts are never attacked.
Title: Re: Mordor: Shadow of War release and reviews
Post by: Gusington on October 30, 2017, 08:17:55 AM
It's very, very repetitive. And I'm getting angry that I haven't reached the sieges yet. There are some cool set-piece sections, like using Ork siege engines against them and some decent stealth missions, but in general there is just too much going on without enough explanation. If I don't get to the sieges soon I am probably going to put ot aside for a bit. Not rage quit, mind you, just put it aside until I am more in the mood again.
