Title: Come and Go FRIDAY
Post by: Tuna on November 10, 2017, 06:26:59 AM

Weekend is finally here, it's always too short, but time to enjoy it while you can.

Will probably be hacking around in my three new games again..  FOG II, Bomber Crew and Strategic Command:.. All this Rome II talk is giving me a hankering to start up a new campaign in that as well.

ACW Minis gaming all day Saturday. Destiny 2 on Xbox One the rest of the time. Maybe some Cold Waters too.

Ogre and a few other board games. I've been spending a bit of time on Divinity: Original Sin enhanced edition - never got that far in the game before (never more than an hour or so); now over the last couple of weeks I've managed to put 10 hours into it. Want to unbox First Martians and This War Of Mine, too, plus possibly some Colonial Twilight.

I pray that this is NOT the weekend I have to unbox/pull all the Christmas shit out. I hate decorating, because that'll be my entire weekend gone in a puff of smoke. :(

I'm desperate to get going with the wargaming stuff again, FoGII sat waiting for me to push some ancient armies about, but when I get time spare, I'm always dipping into Warframe/Battlefield 1/(shiny indie bauble on Steam or console) instead.

I've been fawning over the SSG games screenshots lately (https://www.reddit.com/r/computerwargames/comments/7bhobn/eagle_day_to_bombing_the_reich_vs_war_in_the_west/dpjsfoo/), but I can't see me ever installing those bad boys again and try to decipher their gaudy magical interfaces.

Looking forward to seeing what TOAW4 brings to the table though.

Back Stateside and in-processing, so I'm just getting used to good food again, tbh. But if gaming happens, I've got all the Wargaming titles to monkey around with.

^ There's a game called Carrier Battles on iOS, and it's quite complicated. I've owned it a while but haven't had time to dive deep into it. Perhaps that is the one?

So, this weekend, aside from being back to working overtime after my small vacation out of town last weekend...

1.) Work on the AAR for DC:Blitz Turn 11.

2.) Work on DC:Blitz Turn 12, if I discover that's back.

3.) Keep up with the epic Fire in the Lake game which the Crisis Grogs have got going.

4.) Already started production on the video AAR for that game, too.

5.) I'm in a multiplayer game of Twilight Struggle (which may end up being another AAR, not sure). I forgot its existence for 2/3 of my allotted gametime on it, so I'm a bit teeth-gnashing over whether I'll have enough gametime left to even try winning!

6.) Yskonyn's multiplayer Red Thunder mission is waiting to continue after the first shot was fired on turn 2. It should be amazing, but I may have to put one of my other mp games to bed first to make room for this one.

7.) Theoretically, I'd like to start Ghost Recon: Wildlands at last, but that seems unlikely.

8.) Which reminds me that a couple of weeks ago I finally started the new Telltale Batman game sequel (the promotional art for which unreasonably compares itself to the classic BTAS series, despite the game going aggressively out of its way not to resemble.) I should resurrect the thread for the first game and add some impressions; but I doubt I'll get to episode 2 this weekend, although I do want to.

Yes that's the one.  Didn't have it in front of me but it looks to be a pretty detailed board game in the iPad.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. The tutorials are enormously long and somewhat confusing, and the game isn't very intuitive, so you have to go through the tutorials to learn it.

It could be I just haven't given it the attention it needs; those are just initial impressions.

Birth of America: Montcalm's Campaign-- waiting on the winter to pass so we can march on Albany from Ft. William Henry. One thing I didn't see coming in this game was the first turn there's snow on the ground, all the Indians go home. Automatically. Without asking. They just leave.  :o   That's a WTF moment the first time it hits you. Maybe some Neverwinter Nights 2 to get the monster-killing out of my system.

Happy Veterans Day to the Vets everywhere. Thank you for all your sacrifices.  O0

That Carrier Battles game looks like that iOS version of Carrier I've heard was in development.  Looks fantastic...someone finally built my idea into a game!

PBEM turns for FOG2, CM, Pike and Shot, Sengoku Jidai, JTCS west front and just started a Hell pbem. Might play some Monstrum to see if i can get off the ship, lights down, headphones on. Have a couple games i'm about halfway or more through, Hard West, Dead Space2, so might keep working toward a finish.....wouldn't that be something, finishing a game :coolsmiley:

Hopefully catching up with R6V2 crew to kill some terrorists.

I'm off today so will be playing some games with my daughter, teaching her Backgammon and Cribbage today.

Last thing...Thank you to all the veterans out there for your service.

Well I have to work tomorrow  :tickedoff: :tickedoff: (and I'm the only Veteran who works there!) But ehh, I get free food. So aside from that.

I will probably be playing either

Birth of Empires on my tablet or PC- it's interesting but there's some parts that are just so, I can't figure the word for it but they don't make everything easy to grok. (As to how things work, what increases labor etc.) However I like how they did the races from BOTF and just changed them slightly, with their Trek type characteristics.

Stellaris- I got an idea brewing for a game.

Or MOO2 - been playing quite a bit of that.

Distant Worlds- maybe??

I don't really know but we'll see.

Happy Veteran's Day/Remembrance Day to our Canadian and British Vets.

New season of Diablo3 just dropped and I promised myself I would pick up the Necromancer...because who doesn't love cold dead things.

I received a copy of Heart of the Swarm from Blizzard because I own Wings of Liberty, so I might check that out (Starcraft 2 basically)

And I was actually making an honest attempt to learn WitW. Man is that interface a pain in the arse. Wish there was a way to see all orders. If there is I haven't found it yet. My goal this winter is the learn that and WitP:AE. Please note I did not say finish...but just learn.

I grabbed Oxygen Not Included because I kinda like those crafting / survival games so I'll give that a spin soon too.

Also grabbed OOTP18 for a buck. So even though I generally dislike watching baseball however being a wargame fan it has that statistical appeal. So why not.

I have been playing Battlefield 1 multiplayer all week. I am officially hooked. The new night battle is extremely tense. Tucked in the fast moving chaos of the battles, there is a real layer of strategy given the right group on the team.

I do my part by being the bullet ridden decoy. But I am improving. FPS are not my strong suit.

Been battling a cold/flu bug all week, so I'm not really been in the mood for anything too deep. Diablo 3 season 12 started Thursday. Decided to main a monk this season. 3/4 of the way to max level already, which isn't bad for me since I only started yesterday. Really enjoying the exploding palm/seven sided strike build. Nothing like mindlessly watching a whole screen of undead/demons explode at the same time.

I might get a little time into something else but right now nothing seems to be sticking long enough to get past the start screen.

Completed my season journey today. Its the first time I've ever completed it. The 6 piece Uliana set bonus is insane, I thought I was clearing the screen before. Its almost ridiculous how fast I'm tearing through stuff.

I did play a little CMANO today. Started playing the Peeling the Onion scenario (nuclear strikes against the soviets in the 50s) while I watched Strategic Air Command on Amazon Prime.

I was at MACE in Charlotte this weekend.  I played:
Savage Worlds Deadlands scenario
Dungeon Crawl Classics (a very chaotic driven system)
Call of Cthulhu (can't spell this morning)
Mansions of Madness tabletop
AD&D 2nd edition - 4th level characters
Ran my own Call of Cthulhu scenario

It was a very fun Con.  I played with a lot of fun people and had a good time.  Dungeon Crawl Classics ended up being a highpoint.  The magic system is extremely chaotic based on how you roll each single spell as cast.

I ended up buying a copy of Elder Sign and Mansions of Madness from dealers at the Con to (hopefully) keep them coming to the con.

I enjoy the ones with dangerous magic.  Tempting you to push the risk/reward scale.   :dreamer:

I had DCC on my wishlist for quite awhile because of it.  Now that the 4th printing has been out for a bit the price is quite reasonable on that big slab of tree.  Had just ordered one yesterday.

Mansions of Madness always enticed me; more so now that the App can run the Keeper side in 2nd Edition.  Just never got off the fence with so many other shinies constantly coming out these days.

I just got my first gaming laptop last week (second-hand Acer Nitro 17' for a very good price). So i find myself, for the first time in my life, in the position that i can play all the games i have (as well as the latest releases)!

So i've been having fun and here are the first games i'be been playing on it:

- Oriental Empires
- Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars
- Napoleon: Total War
- Civilization 6
- Dawn of Andromeda

Next games i will be playing on it (once i finish a campaign of each game above):

- Stellaris
- Starpoint Gemini 2
- Grand Ages Medieval

I also made some nice progress in my Romulan Empire Campaign in Birth of the Federation (the campaign i've been playing for ever). Took 2-3 colonies form the Cardassians and 2 colonies from the Federation. Cardassians have only 5-4 colonies left and none with Dilithium...going for the kill. Federation is going to take a Little longer. Klingons have only a few colonies and the Ferengi are on the other side of the galaxy with the largest Empire after mine...

I think it's a very decent game with lots of details. The design of the game has many comon points with Armada 2526 of course. You really are in control of many aspects in your empire. Can tell you more once i finish my first campaign. They are already working on a DLC i think which will expand the game even more.

I've not played Arkham Horror.

Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition has an accompanying app that can be run off of a phone or tablet.  It provides background sounds as well as showing which tiles get laid out when you open a door, peer around a corner, etc....   With the sound and the map being discovered as you would notice when it crosses your line of sight there is a pretty strong horror feel.  A lot is unknown, just like it would be in real life.

Supposedly, the tiles lay out differently and the options are randomized.

We had five players and the difficulty was pretty high.  The difficulty is ramped up given the number of players for game balance.  But our players kept separating from each other which meant there was no mutual support in combat.  This is not a complaint on my part, it is just how the game played out.

I bought it at the Con and will get around to playing it before the end of the year.  We have approximately 70 guests coming to the house on Friday for a wedding reception for local friends married in another State last month.  The wife owns me until Friday's event is over.

Is Mansions of Madness similar to Arkham Horror?

I have the latter, though I've yet to play it.

Dangit, sorry, meant to say Betrayal at House on the Hill.

I do have Arkham Horror and Betrayal both, but again haven't played either. What you're describing sounds a lot like Betrayal at House on the Hill also.

The newest expansion for Mansions of Madness just came out. It's called Streets of Arkham.  Adds three new scenarios, 4 characters, a handful of new bad guys, and a bunch of new tiles and.cards.  I picked my copy up last night.  Bloody expensive compared to the last two expansions!

The game can be punishingly difficult.  Each scenario has a few possible map layouts.  The overall story is the same in each scenario but there are variations as to who the bad guy is, what monsters spawn, etc.  Some variations are much harder than others.  With 5 players, they increase the difficulty by cranking up the HP levels of the enemies you face.  Can be tough when the big guys start coming out, especially if you didn't find decent weapons beforehand.

I think I liked the Streets of Innsmouth adventure best so far, even though we've never managed to beat it yet in 6 attempts.

They're different, other than the theme.

From what I've seen of Mansions of Madness gameplay, it's closer to a character-based "dungeon crawler", but with the Lovecraft theme.  Which means less hacking & slashing of hordes for loot, and more investigation & exploration.  Plus some puzzle mini-games thrown in.

The original MoM was only a one-versus-many system; similar to the Descent 2e/Imperial Assault system in that regard.  But the 2nd edition of MoM has an app which will run the Keeper so you can play it purely co-op too (again, kinda similar to Descent).  I'm not sure if it will do that for all the base game scenarios, or whether there are special co-op ones in the app.

There are currently a total of 13 scenarios available for the 2nd edition of MoM but 6 of those require you to have purchased the expansions and one is a DLC for sale from the app.  There were 4 scenarios available when the base game was first released but I'm pretty sure they added 2 more later (not 100% on this though).

I also just bought Eldrich Horror and I've been reading the rules on that game.  I can't unbox and play it until the 70 person party is finished on Friday.

MoM 1st Edition is the last boardgame I ever played with my best friend. I still have it but will probably pick up 2nd edition at some point. Do you guys know of any advantage that having 1E will give me when I buy 2E?

Also, all but 2-3 of the 1E original scenarios were pretty broken as I recall. Do you guys know if they fixed them?

There are some conversion instructions to use your 1st ed stuff with 2nd ed but most of it's not usable.  They want their cash.

Eldritch Horror gets more difficult, the fewer characters you are using.  Four is the sweet spot for a decent chance at winning.  Lower than that, be prepared for the pain.  >:D

Actually, you should prepare for the pain any way you go.  Because it's a Lovecraft theme.  Your characters will be getting various curses, injuries, insanities, and possibly worse, in your desperate attempts to shut the gates and prevent the Old One from coming in.   ^-^

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll start with a solo game running 4 characters based on your suggestion.  I'm considering doing a tabletop AAR.

4 characters can suck up a lot more table space, and may seem like a lot extra to keep track of while you're learning that first game.  But you won't feel like all the monsters & objectives & bad stuff™ are dog-piling you so much that you lose hope of winning too early.

You wanna despair, of course, but only thematically.  :D

Fortunately the rules for Eldritch Horror are fairly easy.  So much more streamlined than the older Arkham Horror.  \m/
