Great start to the season... by the way, do you guys keep track of the g!es mentioned during the episode? That Hearts of Iron or Civ gets mentioned is probably not hard for people to remember, but some of the board games mentioned might be somewhat obscure... I'm not opposed to re-listening to the GrogCast when I get out of my car to write stuff down...but, I'm lazy...

And it's good to know the universe as we know it is still functioning after the grogcast went live  ;D  thanks for the heads up about the language ....not that I mind the occasional f-bomb being thrown around , but yeah thanks  O0 I have listened to the grogcast before on my phone in the car , but had to give that up ....at least while I'm driving , lol , it's just way to distracting to listen and drive , nearly crashed , hahahahahahaha !!!!!! Omg ......I sound like a total fanboy , lol , guess I am :)

The Zahn books are okay and I give Zahn a lot of credit for carrying the franchise through a moribund period. It's hard to believe today, but after Return of the Jedi the SW franchise was pretty much dead for almost a decade. Lucas was done with it, no one knew if there'd ever be another movie and little else was going on with it. Zahn's books changed all that and renewed interest in SW in a big way. I'm just not a huge fan of the stories, but I will acknowledge what he did for SW.

Agreed. The Diane Duane books were some of the best sci-fi I've ever read. There were  a few other gems as well. Vonda McIntyre's books were very good. Her adaptation of Wrath of Khan is worth a read to this day.

So did Lucas want to jump back in and do more films directly because of the Timothy zahn books ? I love the movies , but I've never really delved much into the background of the whole thing . What's the relationship between zahn and Lucas ?

I don't think there's a direct relationship. The main thing the Lucas people told Zahn, and other authors, was that the period before the first Star Wars film was off limits. So Lucas was planning to do the prequels at some point. But Zahn's books did reignite fan interest and lead to other works. Shadows of Empire was widely acknowledged as a Star Wars movie without an actual movie. That book was marketed as though it was a movie - toys, video game tie-ins, etc.

Zahn was hired by Lucas to write the official follow-up after Return of the Jedi, and Lucasfilm had deemed them "canonical".

Whether or not Lucas was 'inspired' by Zahn to go back to the first 3 movies is unknown, but I doubt it, since they were 8 years or so apart.

When Disney bought the Star Wars franchise, they jettisoned all of the "official" continuity from the post-Jedi Lucasfilm efforts (several book series and several graphic novels - Dark Empire was incredible) and completely rebooted everything, and that gave us The Force Awakens.  It also deprived us of ever seeing Thrawn on the big screen as he was written in the Heir to the Empire series, where he was a serious bad-ass.

They put Thrawn back into canon through Rebels, so it's not impossible for him to show up in a future film.

Mostly true.
Dark Empire I was fantastic.
Dark Empire II was a steaming pile of poached goat balls.

The ongoing series were uneven, but more good than bad.
The advantage that they had was that they were significantly better than the old Marvel ongoing Star Wars series from the mid-80s, which was targeted at 10-year-old boys whose lunch money never made it from the bus to the classroom*.  Dark Horse realized those 10-year-olds had all grown up some where along the way and treated them as adults when writing for their audience.

So in both your opinions mirth and Brant , has Disney buying the Star Wars franchise completely ruined what Lucas was trying to do with it ? I definately need to read this stuff to understand what's gone on , but I loved rogue one because it explained how they got what they needed to destroy the Death Star . The whole story of stardust was really enjoyable :)

And I'd sooner talk to real people than google any day , lol , I hate/love google , it's always a last resort for me ....I'm weird !!!!

Cool  8) the book it is then :) is this book the very beginning of the whole Star Wars thing then ? Please tell me there's no prequel to that ......or prequel to that , lol , because although I loved rogue one , I NEED that to be the beginning !!!!!! I'm getting all prequeled out  :wow:   ;D

Well, Brian Daley wrote a series of Han Solo books set before the first Star Wars film. Those were pretty good for back in the day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Han_Solo_Adventures (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Han_Solo_Adventures)

Then there's Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster. That takes place immediately after the first SW movie and was written as a sequel in case the first movie bombed and Lucas couldn't do a big budget second movie. That book isn't great, but a it's worth a read for nostalgia purposes.

Under no circumstances, should you subject yourself to Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu. It was basically unreadable.

Thanks for the links mirth  O0 the hans solo /Chewie stories sound like a lot of fun , adventure and more of a back story on them is cool . I always thought it was a shame in the movies how their friendship wasn't expanded on a bit more , because I think it's a great partnership .
Splinter of the minds eye looks good too :) more explanation of the kiber crystal , it looks like . Hahaha , that totally sounds like yoda !!!!
Jinasso wore that around her neck in rogue one , so it'll be great to have that expanded upon . Thanks for the heads up on the mind harp of sharu .......good to know !!! Lol .
So basically , I'll read/listen to heir of the empire .......move on to the dark horse comic ......then go for the hans solo and Chewie stories .....and that should scratch my Star Wars itch for some time to come  :bd:

Honestly, Emeraldlis, I would just start with the Thrawn trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command), and then go from there -- should you feel so inclined.  mirth's disagreement notwithstanding, they really are good books; they're considered a cornerstone of the Star Wars expanded universe for a reason.

It remains, by far, my favorite standalone Star Wars novel.  It helps to have read the (also excellent IMO) X-Wing series of novels first, but it's not necessary to enjoy it.

Hi martok , yeah I'm about a quarter of the way through heir to the empire . I'm listening to it on audible , and honestly it's really cool to hear the characters voices brought to life . The book starts with Star Wars intro theme music , seriously cool  8) I'm loving how it starts with leia being pregnant and kind of carries on the story of hans solo and his cheeky bartering , and general roaming the galaxy trying to help out leia :) the character of thrawn is excellent , I really hope we see him in a movie one day . But so far so good , it's a really enjoyable story :) I'll definately be purchasing the rest of the trilogy ........and now you mention I Jedi , along with the others ....hmmmmmmm , I'm going to be doing a LOT of Star Wars reading/listening over the coming weeks  :bd: I even watched the force awakens a couple of nights ago , lol , I've got my Star Wars mojo on !!!!!!!!  :notworthy: thanks for the extra recommends  O0

Just keep this in mind:

The Force Awakens is a COMPLETELY different story than the books we're talking about.

The books all existed before that movie, and the creators of the movie have said outright that the books don't matter, and may as well have never existed.

There are literally hundreds of non-canon books set in the Star Wars universe out there...counting graphic novels.

One of my favorites is the X-Wing: Rogue Squadron series. I want to say there were 12 in that one? I can't recall, I should re-read them.

Yeah , I get ya , I know the story is different . It's just that I had my daughter watching tv with me , and I could only rope her into "letting" me , lol , watch that one  ;D still a great movie night though :) then we ended up looking at TERRIBLE fan videos on YouTube of the upcoming movie in December , the last Jedi  :hide: wow , I'd sooner just wait !!!!

And then I told her about heir of the empire ......THAT did not go down well , because she doesn't want any of the plot ruining for seeing the movie in December  ;D I think she actually tried to unhear everything I just said , lol :) I told her I think rey and keylo rent are brother and sister  O:-)

But if the books are not going to be used , well firstly that sucks  :-\  I really like thrawn as a bad guy , he's got that laid back menacing , I will choke you with the force whilst working on my impressive Vader like smile and yawning ....attitude , going in !!!!!

You mean the X-Wing series?  You should totally read it -- at least the first book, Rogue Squadron.  If you end up enjoying that one, I think you'd like the rest of the series -- at least the first 9 books.  (The 10th book, Mercy Kill, is more of a distant sequel -- it takes place after the events in the New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force series.  I still found it to be a good read, but I'm pretty sure I would've gotten a lot more out of it if I had first/also read the NJO and LotF novels.)

I do recall reading the Han Solo adventures series, something about his life as an Imperial officer candidate (which explained why he liked wearing the pants with the stripe down the sides - those were his uniform pants).

Also something that had to do with Jabba's palace; it was a collection of stories that were woven from the background of more well-known events, like the brain-spider-looking things walking around in the background in a few of the scenes in Jedi.

Yeah one of the book's covered that. He made it into the Imperial Academy as a pilot cadet or something like that. I thought it was cool bit of backstory. It may have been the same book that introduced the Z-95 Headhunter, which was the precusor to the X-Wing (though it wasn't portrayed as such in the novel).

Those were cool books for the time. Not much Star Wars material to be found, outside of the films, in the late 70s/early 80s. The Marvel Comics and a handful of paperbacks were about it. And the Holiday Special  :uglystupid2:
