New Steam game. Classic 4x, with small, medium, large, XL, and XXL maps.
Three races at the moment, humans, undead, and mechs. Fourth is planned.
VERY deep, surprisingly so. Here are some of the things you can do:
Capture villages, gold mines, quarries, and a few other things, each of which give you resources.
Recruit level 1-3 armies, as your Castle improves. Similar to HoMM.
Eight different upgrade areas for your castle, to place about 20 different buildings, each of which have several different upgrades.
Hero system, at least 50 different upgrades, each with six armor slots. Combat, defense, support roles, or a combination.
Each race has eight different army units, each with six levels of upgrades, three options for each upgrade level.
The AI is strong. I just got my ass kicked in at the second lowest level.
There is much more than I have described. It is a two person team that developed in, one excellent programmer, and his girlfriend the artist. They're Chinese, and her art is anime. I like the art, personally, and the game is much, MUCH more polished and sophisticated than the art might suggest.

The art style is a total turn off for me. I just can't get over playing something that looks like a cartoon my 5 year old daughter might enjoy watching on Disney Junior. I recognize that this could be deceiving and result in a missed opportunity, but it is just not my cup of tea.

Does this mean I should cancel your invite to the Brony convention?

Yes. Please. But, by all means...knock yourself out and have fun! :crazy2:
I for one might welcome a Chinese anime-artist girlfriend. :coolsmiley:
This is evolving in to the first best thread of the year. Undead and mechs together sound great, hopefully there will be another attempt with a less ridiculous art style.

It's ok, I'll pass too. I'm not fond of mixing a Rainbow Dash with my Fluttershy.
My fictional Chinese anime-artist girlfriend would no doubt draw the hell out of that. :smitten:
(Okay, I need to stop joking about that, or the Chinese bots in our communications hardware will start flooding me with honey traps as a way of getting agents into the country.)
(Also, I have legitimately forgotten what this thread was supposed to be about... {checking} )

Yep. Art is very childish. But then it seems young men like pink pony anime these days. Judging by the avatars in other forums.

Then my work here is done.
Another day aspiring to achieve the glory of the Grogheads Order of the Golden Dongle.
^Heh heh heh, he said Grogheads
I respect you gentlemen's opinion. You don't care for the art style. Fair enough.
My personal opinion, mine alone, is that the GAMEPLAY is the most important part of any game.
I guess that the Steam rating of 94% positive doesn't mean that much, either.....

Respect your opinion too, and I'm not criticizing. It's just not for me, even though I can still see it possibly being a really good strategy game for others. I'm glad you found something new you like and I'm sure some others around here will discover it because you posted about it.
I for one didn't criticize the art style at all! -- though it isn't my favorite. Still wishlisted it. O:-)

You know we're all a bunch of reprobates.
To each his own, if you like the style, that's fine. I know a lot that get into it.
Myself, I find even the Firaxis X-Com and Civ to be pushing the edge of what I like.
But I'm a grim dour individual who finds no joy in anything except cheap whiskey and cheaper adult cinema. No one should care a whit about what I think.
Nah, the game looks interesting. It's not for me, but there's lots of things people enjoy that aren't for me either.
It takes all kinds to make a world!
The game looks very interesting to me. So long as it doesn't turn into a total spreadsheet mash-up, I will almost certainly check it out once it makes it out of Early Build mode.
Pardon my grognardy-grumpiness. Pretty soundly rejected by the group, for the most part.
...and that's OK! I like a hexes and chits (TRIM THEM, DAMMIT) with a small silhouette and LOTS of itty bitty numbers as much as anyone.
I loved me my 5-5-11 Churchill tanks in Panzer Blitz, and a MG along a straight road in ASL still brings a smile to my face. GO AHEAD, TRY TO CROSS THE STREET!
This is a good game, but not for everyone.

Nah, you weren't rejected. I think it's part of the forum rules somewhere that every thread has to be derailed to some extent in order for it to be considered valid.
That's me on the table.
Is that what Origins is like?
My guess is Origins is waaay more disturbing.
Getting back to the OP, this game has released a Demo on Steam. I played it for an hour or two last night and am quite impressed with the game mechanics and reach.
I've only scratched the surface, but I can't really tell how much "flavor" the game has. I'm not crazy about the art work, but after playing for a few minutes, it's not really a distraction. I LOVE the notion of having a city production mechanic that involves more than just "Population and Production", even if they only introduce one or two more "resources".
The biggest question I have is around replayability. It feels like they have a little bit of work to do to customize different factions, etc. At least in the demo, everything feels awfully generic. And the map, while it might steer you in certain directions, doesn't seem to have an overriding influence that I can see (yet).
Those who have played the game more than I might be able to comment more fully on it. For still being in Alpha, the game looks very good. For those interested in just spinning the tires on the Demo, I thought it worth a bump on this forum.
sorry cant look at that ..ugh :)
I wish I could have found a game like this when my son was 8 years old. Maybe I could have steered him towards strategy type games a little more. A great combination of great game mechanics and graphics that a young audience would like.
Just spent 3 hours with the demo. Seems pretty solid so far.
The interface needs some work in places but the gameplay is good. The tutorial leaves a bit to guesswork as far as what things do, some translation issues or simply a lack of written instruction in places but I sussed it all eventually. Only quirk I found there was after winning the tutorial it gave me the option to continue, which I did and eventually cleared the board of all enemies but the last requirement was occupy all enemy castles... As far as I could see I WAS occupying all the castles but it wouldn't give me that last check mark.
Reminded me of Wesnoth to an extent. Was fun enough for it to somehow be 4am. ::)
ARISE, Thread of the Dead!
I've been playing this one some more, and I've got to say, the end result is awfully impressive. I get you non-judgmental Art Snobs who can't get past it, but dang, the game play is DEEP and different. For $10, I'm definitely pulling the trigger on this one.
I also keep getting my booty crushed playing on the 2nd-lowest difficulty level!
