It's brilliant.

Loved every moment.

Far better than "Cats".

I plan to listen again and again!

I could wax poetic about issue #39.  It is the sole issue of The Dragon that still has a place on my gaming shelf.  FWIW and IMHO:
1)  I loved the firearms rules for Melee, ONLY because we grew tired of hack 'n' slash battles.
2)  The skirmish rules for Napoleonic warfare was like a dream come true.  Sometime in '77(?), I picked up a book  - Great Naval Battles - from the local library that featured the Battle of Trafaglar, which begat my life-long interest in the age of sail, which begat my interest in the Hornblower books of C.S. Forester, which begat me reading Death to the French! (Rifleman Dodd in the US), which begat my interest in Napoleonic warfare...especially the soldiers point of view.  I tried using the rules for Boothill to simulate man-to-man Napoleonic fights, but it didn't feel right.  The skirmish rules in issue 39 were perfect, and I actually started a solo campaign game that consisted of engagements involving between 10 - 15 figures total.  I used 1/72nd airfix plastic soldiers for the French and British, and US confederate soldiers for the Spanish peasants.  About a year or so later, I picked up a copy of the Courier magazine that had an idea for a Russian retreat scenario, which provide a few more gaming opportunities.  I believe I used British AWI soldiers (also airfix) for the Russians.  I also recall playing a couple of Egyptian campaign games when I got a French Foreign legion fort that included a set of Arab (bedouin) soldiers.
3)  My friend Kevin K. DM'ed the Halls of Beoll Dur.  I distinctly recall that during the final battle, two of our party were teleported to distant astral planes and one was turned to stone.  The two remaining members (including me!) threw Zeus' white eagle into the throne room, shut the doors, and waited for the fighting to stop.

Good times.

As I said in the NEW DUtP recorded today:

-4 points for embracing the needless addition of gunpowder weapons to Melee.

+2 points for playing skirmish level Napoleonics in an era when it didn't have a teeny fraction of the support it does today.

+3 points for playing said skirmish rules using Airfix figures, the gateway mini for a generation...or two.  Mine were  a mix of Airfix and, later, ESCI, although only the former did Highlanders.  Which is important.

Thanks for giving the episode a listen.

Actually really enjoying this blast from the past. Used to be into role play in the very early eighties and used to buy the infrequent copy of Dragon from Bristol in England, only ever had a few issues but I was an aspiring DM at that time and really loved the magazine. Probably bought through to about '84 I guess...hoping to see some editions that I used to own so that I can reminisce about all those good times. Keep up the good work, well worth looking at and listening to.

Laugh as you may at "Condensed Combat"...but didn't the D&D system at the time kind of promote this kind of minutia and attention to infinite detail?  I mean...look at the weapons list, by G-d.  How many of us, before reading a D&D (or advanced Melee) rule book, even knew what an aklys, bardiche, ranseur, Bohemian Ear-spoon, or voulge was?  I remember having to plow through the massive World Book Dictionary in the school library just to figure out what some of these were, only because (of course) some of our D&D group INSISTED on playing with these strange weapons.
Title: Re: New Feature! Dragon' Up The Past
Post by: MetalDog on November 29, 2017, 11:30:52 PM
Being knee deep in those rulebooks actually came in handy the other night.  A new face to our bi-monthly D&D sessions imagined the weapon the monster was wielding as having a wavy blade and I knew immediately the word he was searching for, kris.  He got it before me, but, I wouldn't have had a chance at it if not for D&D.

I think the joke was pointing at the irony of the rules NOT being being condensed  :DD I don't think the joke was about the information , or the relevance of the rules :)

I thought the irony of it all was hilarious, I thought the absurdity of calling the rules condensed..... When they quite clearly weren't, was really funny..... I was laughing right along with you guys  :DD

I'm sure the rules are still very relevant  O0

It's interesting, I was never edged-weapon obsessed enough to care about the statistical difference between a falchion and a broadsword.  I am keenly aware, however, that many were and from the oldest days of D&D it sought to feed that particular Frankenstein.  I observe in passing, though, that I did spend many an hour debating why you couldn't swing a bastard sword in a 10-foot-wide hallway.

Esmeraldis is correct, though, that, for me the humor is ultimately in calling something that looked like that "condensed".  Whether or not it objectively was smaller than what proceeded it, it certainly did not look or feel that way...

Nice to see a magazine featured from the 90's :)  And god bless those TSR guys for not giving up on Buck Rogers   O:-)  Also that whole 90's lemming phase was very weird, lol, I never got on board with that craze, but some kids at my high-school loved it  :o

I was convinced that Bryan Adams song, everything I do (I do it for you), was going to be the hit song in '91.... I think It ran for about 16 weeks in the UK charts as a number one smash hit! I was yelling out the answer to... Uhm.... My phone screen  ;D I was gutted that I was a week or two out, never would have guessed Gloria estafan, rush, rush, for being number 1 at the beginning of July '91.   But then I was also convinced that Robin Hood prince of theives, with Kevin Costner, was the number one movie...... So wha' do I know  ::)  you got me thinking with those ones Cyrano  O0

And.... You could have had a short episode, if it was a short episode... Omg  :DD  I actually choked on what I was eating...... Which was a lot better than the week before last, when I was laughing so much, dropped my phone in a bowl of stew  ::)  hahahahahaha  ;D Can I sue for damages, lol, I was cleaning that mess up for a good 5 minutes  :hide: or maybe at the very least you could flash a warning up, an "hilarity is about to ensue" notification.... That would be just great  :bd:

I love the fact that the magazine features short stories. I thought that whole section about the princess ark looked very entertaining. Looks like a cool game to get involved in :) And I'm not really into tanks, but I thought all of that information on tanks was very interesting..... Scary, but interesting  :)  I now know if I'm ever looking at a hostile tank heading my way.... Shoot out the treads!!!!! And you had to explain crunchies..... Crunching through a tread, ewwwwwwww! Thanks for that Brant, lol.

I also thought the orcs nest pin was very cool, and the story behind it.   8)  I like collectable pins, I'm a very nerdy pin person!!!!

Anyway, well done guys  O0 a very entertaining show again :)  now, then, where can I get my hands on a buck Rogers boardgame from '91????? I feel a quest coming on to find one  :D

The wink does change things  :)  I would've actually found that funny, had you done that in the first place. And also if it wasn't the only thing you commented on. Call me crazy, but usually when someone gives you a compliment, you don't attack them with something so negative.... It's just so rude  :o

But yeah, thanks for changing your sentence into cheeky sarcasm, rather than what felt like an attack!

Great show  O0 that was an interesting link between the mind flyer and stranger things season 2. I would not have known that  ??? I also saw the vorpal sword and the bandersnatch mentioned in one of the articles. I know alice in wonderland killed the jabberwocky monster with the vorpal sword... But why is it mentioned in dragon magazine  ???

The artwork on the front cover of this issue, the butterfly dragon, is my favourite so far. I think the colours in the background being muted, make the stronger colours of the dragon really pop!!! It looks less 2D and more 3D :) and I thought the proportions of the dragon were quite good. I'd definitely have that cover as a poster, or screen saver or something, really like it.

The other one I liked was the dragon and the seagulls :) I've been dive bombed a time or two by those hungry pesky birds  ;D it's funny, because when I was listening to that show, I couldn't help thinking about this video clip......

That was an uber cool show guys, nice one  O0 thanks for the mention, that was just really to kind of you both to mention me on the show. I'm honoured  :)

And I think I'm in nerd heaven with all the cool references mentioned! Flash Gordon for a start, LOVE that movie and soundtrack! I even had a dog when I was 10 years old called flash.... And she was a girl, lol, that's how big a fan I am  :smitten:

Hearing about the vorpal sword was awesome, thanks for the further explanation  O0 that was just really cool  8) play by mail references crack me up everytime  ;D just to think that was even a thing makes me laugh, but the nerd in me would've loved to try it  :nerd:

I seriously love this series of shows that you guys have put together! I hope you can continue it in the future, if you do, as always I'll be coming along for the ride and listening in  O0 great show guys, well done

Dragon #45 sponsored by Lyle's was a great show guys  O0 I thought the design kit for the dungeon in the magazine was a really nice idea. Dragon tales magazine looks like it might have been a fun add on to dragon mag. Fleshing out the fictional tales of the characters involved as well as having the mechanics of a game, seems fun!

And now I know I can enhance my fantasy RPG world with a dragons tooth... Awesome  :dreamer:  All in all, I really enjoyed the show :)
