Title: Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
Post by: Huw the Poo on September 08, 2019, 06:20:38 AM
The game is only a month from release and some of us have been participating in the beta this weekend, so I guess it's time for its own thread (previous brief discussion was in the Wildlands thread).

I've played the beta, but not much because I'm definitely going to buy the game.  My initial impressions - as someone who loves and still plays Wildlands - are extremely positive.  The world looks like it's going to be just as huge as that of Wildlands.  When Breakpoint was first announced I was afraid they were going to emphasise the survival element too strongly, but I now know that they aren't.  This is basically a (minor) evolution of Wildlands in a different setting, with some elements of The Division thrown in.  For example, you now get hubs where you see other players, just like in The Division, and at these hubs you can shop, craft, and do other things like prepare for your next mission (basically choose a boost - extra XP, extra stamina and so on).

As we should all expect from Ubisoft, the world is absolutely beautiful and totally believable.  The small corner I've seen so far contains grasslands, mountains, swamps, waterfalls etc.  It's also littered with vehicles, much to my joy!  The first hub always has a helo, jeep, and several bikes outside whenever you spawn.

Apart from the new additions I mentioned above, the gameplay is very much Wildlands, albeit without a squad (which I know has put some people off but honestly I haven't had need of a squad so far).  Ubisoft are masters of the open world, and as usual you have multiple options to approach each mission.  For fans of Wildlands it's a no-brainer and frankly I can't wait to get my hands on the game.

As a side note, to my surprise I find myself slowly investing more and more in UPlay.  Ubisoft are slowly and quietly improving the platform all the time, and I'm coming to like some of the social features.  I never thought I'd hear myself say this to be honest.

For those who care, I've been reading that AI squad mates will be added at or post launch.

Seriously, this is fantastic news.

Very nice.  Once I get my World of .... fix over and done with (for the time being), I need to jump back into Ubi's Division/Wildlands stuff, and I like how Breakpoint sounds now.

Open beta from now until 29th.  Download is 30-odd GB.

Its getting pretty beat up in some of the impressions videos I have seen. Some people do not like that they have tried turning the franchise into more of a Division style looter shooter.

Yeah, it's a fair point that I can't argue.  Some elements of The Division and games-as-a-service have definitely crept in.  Ubisoft posted a fairly lengthy blog post (https://ghost-recon.ubisoft.com/game/en-us/news-updates/3rfU9kZGcNimnSJphCHpnc/tom-clancys-ghost-recon-breakpoint-year-1-intel-and-purchasable-content) detailing what to expect over the coming months and years, and how the currencies and other GAAS features will work.  It's pretty transparent actually, to their credit.

At the end of the day, the gameplay is still fantastic and the world is huge.  My position remains that for fans of Wildlands it's a no-brainer.

Not sure myself yet, liked wildlands but have hated Divison for some reason....so if more division like, I might be waiting on this one...

I'm in the same boat, Wildlands was fun but Division seemed boring as hell with ridiculously bullet spongey enemies.  Not sure what to make of this title yet.

Now that you say that, the crazy amount of bullets to kill somebody was one of the things that turned me off right away....

Well it's far, far more Wildlands than Division.  The enemies feel about as tough as they were in Wildlands, and a headshot is lethal.

The comparisons with The Division come from the GAAS elements, and the social hub.

^That might not be a bad thing.

Hated the bullet sponges in the division too.  The devs intent was that you were supposed to be constantly leveling up your gear to make the AI less bulletspongy, but who really plays theses games 6 months after release.  For me, it runs its course for a few months then it's back to flight sims.  Not going to spend a year leveling up gear, it's fun for a month maybe, then it's done.

I've just been playing for the last 90 minutes or so and never needed more than three or four chest shots, or one headshot, to kill someone.  Hopefully that puts some of you at ease!

That is not really my understanding of the mechanic. Damage in the Division series is point based, so it is much more RPG-like than say a standard shooter. That's why when you hit an enemy, you see the number indicating the amount of damage inflicted. It seems off putting to be in a game world that looks and feels like a traditional 3rd person shooter, but is really running like an rpg under the hood...

The drone warfare looks stupid and all of the enemies look like armored clowns.

Game looks stupid. I wish they'd just remake the original GR in a new engine.

I downloaded and played the beta a little bit this morning.  Overall, not horrible by any means and could see myself purchasing at some point.

- I like the auto pickup feature where ammo and other things get added when you walk by versus always having to hit some button

- Killing enemies still seemed to me take a number of bullets, even at very close range.  Although head shots certainly were effective.  Maybe my enemy had some bullet proof stuff on, not sure.

- Something I didn't like that I saw several times.  When I got wounded, in the middle of a firefight with literally enemies standing next to me, I would auto start to heal myself.  Basically my guy would pull out bandages and start repairing (which takes a number of seconds), even though an enemy is right next to me pumping more bullets into me.  I can cancel it by pressing a button, but the sequence takes so long, way too late.

- I didn't get far enough this morning, but the release will have squad mates, right?

I'll give it more time this weekend, but if anything, not totally off my radar but likely not day one especially since really no discount for pre order or early buying.

Yeah AI squad mates are coming later.

There's technically no preorder discount but if you have 100 Ubisoft points (whatever the hell they're called) that you earn by just playing their games, you can trade them for a 20% discount.

That auto healing thing sounds weird.  I'm deliberately staying away from the storyline and I like to snipe targets from afar so I guess I just haven't seen it yet.

Were you able to get the 20% discount on the pre order?  Looking at their advertisement, seems to imply you can't get on pre orders, nor recent releases...which seems to rule me out.

You also mentioned that squad mates is coming later, thought I read in a couple of places it was supposed to be there on release.....if squad mates not there day one, they probably another reason may hold off a bit.  Not sure I would want to play it solo and then come back and try as a team...prefer the team aspect.

Found my own answer again:)  So I guess it could come anytime between October 2019 and October 2020.  Bummer...

From developers....

AI TEAMMATES
We're still working on the AI Teammate implementation, and we'll have more to share with you later in Year 1. Keep an eye out for updates along the way!

As much as I will be tempted, between paying full price and no squad mates, likely two reasons I hold off too....I'll continue playing the beta today to see if it changes my mind.  Still mind boggling they didn't include squad mates from the start.
Title: Re: Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
Post by: Huw the Poo on September 28, 2019, 10:18:56 AM
I think it's fairly clear that the direction shifted fairly late in development.  It was originally marketed as a survival simulator, with an extensive injury system and a narrative of you as a lone wolf trying to escape the island.  Now, the injury system has been watered down a lot and they're adding AI squad mates - as opposed to them already being implemented.  It screams change of direction based on player feedback.

I'm not particularly concerned, myself.  I get that a lack of squad mates is a deal-breaker for some of you, but I intend to play this multiplayer as much as possible so for me it's a moot point.  The only changes I want to see are QOL changes, like being able to properly compare weapons in the shop for example.

Hate to admit, been kind of addicted to the beta for large portions of the weekend.  Even on the easiest setting, I am struggling:)  Seems like most enemies come in groups of 2 or more so much harder to sneak up and take them out without a firefight.  My sniper rifle has been my only friend:)

So there is a chance this might be a purchase for me sooner than later, even without the squadmates.....

Yeah you definitely need to employ stealth in this game.  And it's going to get tougher too; this open beta grants skill points faster than the full release will.

I've been absolutely loving my time with the beta, and it's a struggle not to play it too much.  I can't wait for Friday. :)

Played this over the weekend with two mates. It was pretty enjoyable. I never played Wildlands but I heard the Open World was a bit problematic there.

It's one of those sandbox games that's either going to be great, or exhausting, depending on what mood you in. Never got a chance to try out PvP which was a shame.

My friend's aren't 100% sold on it for the moment so we're probably going to adopt a 'wait and see' attitude anyway.

I'm really trying to find an excuse to buy breakpoint, but other than you two, I can't find one. The early impressions pretty universally descibe it as a disappointing "hodge-podge" that struggles to find an identity.

Could you guys explain what it is that is so appealing as compared to say, Wildlands?
Title: Re: Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
Post by: Huw the Poo on October 01, 2019, 05:51:54 PM
You know how vocal people can be.  Yes it has some features of other games - mainly The Division - but it's still very much Wildlands in a different world and with a greater emphasis on drones (the enemy's as much as your own).

The way I'd pitch it is it's an obvious purchase if you're a fan of Wildlands and want another game which does some things a bit differently.  But if you aren't interested in playing with other people, maybe wait until AI squadmates are in.  As I've said before, I haven't felt the need for them yet, especially as you can now employ sync shot drones.  But I wouldn't try to convince you to buy the game if you aren't happy with a lack of squadmates.

For me personally, I love Wildlands and I just want another one.  A new world to explore, a new story to play through, etc.  For what it's worth, I think Auroa is a much more interesting world than the Bolivian setting of Wildlands.  In Wildlands a large part of the game is played assaulting cities, villages and forts, whereas - from what I've seen so far - in Breakpoint a lot more happens in the wilderness.  Things are a bit more guerilla.

I very much enjoyed Wildlands too. It's only a matter of time until I get this, but I would like to wait for AI Squad mates. I'm really pissed they weren't included out of the gate. I think it's unforgiveable.
Title: Re: Ghost Recon: Breakpoint

I honestly think it's down to the late-stage change of development I speculated about earlier.  It really seems like they initially went for hardcore survival.  You're supposed to be almost the only survivor of a disaster, outgunned and hopelessly outnumbered and trying desperately to get off the island.  I'd bet good money that the initial playtest got a lot of negative feedback about this, so very late in development they shifted back toward a squad model.  I can't think of a better reason for squadmates being planned but not yet implemented at release.  The sync shot drones are a big clue, too.

JH, here is my take for what it is worth......what ended up selling me.

- I loved Wildlands and this felt like a great extension to an already great game
- I found myself not being able to stop over the weekend beta, just had that feel where I wanted to keep playing
- Driving felt better
- Overall controls felt better; player stumbles and reacts differently, more realistic
- Love when you go prone, you can bury yourself into the ground for extra camo
- Story seems decent although tried not to pay attention as much so it can be fresh on release

Bottomline, just felt like an improved experience from Wildlands which I thoroughly enjoyed....I will get my money's worth.

As for squadmates, you know I had the same reaction as you....until I played the beta.  I really did not miss having squadmates and the story and how things unfold kind of made sense not to have squadmates.  Certainly would love to be optional, but did not turn out to be a make or break decision after all.

Lastly, I am no expert at these games and I don't over analyze for realism or what mass reviewers think....I am sure there are quirks and things experts may not like, to each his own.....I simply found it fun to play and its been a long time where a game kept my attention for hours over a weekend.

Can't wait for it to be out, although I won't have access to play it until the weekend:)

Seems like most reviewers bashing it, just don't know why from the limited time I played with it in the beta....guess I don't care as long as I have fun.

Wildlands wasn't very well received either, and look how that turned out!

In other news, just before I went to bed last night I noticed an update for Breakpoint, so I downloaded it and the game promptly launched!  A day early?  I wish I'd bloody known, I spent the evening playing that awful Destiny 2 game when apparently I could have been playing this!  Oh well, just one more day of work to get through...

yep, not sure.....but just amazed how universal everyone seems to hate it.  the game certainly is not revolutionary or extremely something new.....i guess i just had different expectations and ok if it is more of the same from wildlands.

oh well, i'll just stop reading the reviews....they just better not stop supporting it anytime soon:)

I'm surprised about the near uniform negativity in reviews too. Its reinforcing my reluctance to buy it at release. The two main criticisms seem to be brain-dead AI and shameless microtransactions. Have you noticed any problems with these issues?

It is always hard for me to judge AI, because I usually play on the easier levels since I am not great at shooters.  But I can say I havent experienced any major things that has made me mad or think I expected more.  Certainly nothing different from my experience in Wildlands. Believe most of the transactions are for multiplayer and stuff like that, I don't play that so haven't noticed much.  Thought I read somewhere that UBI was dialing back on those as well, but not 100% sure.

I don't blame people if they hold off based on the reviews but personally I have liked it so far and again, seems just like an extension to Wildlands so I didn't really expect more.

Well now that I've finally been able to put some time in, one thing I can say is that the microtransactions issue has been blown way out of proportion.  It isn't in your face at all; in fact, you only know it's there if you specifically click on "store", which I did once just to see.  Every thing I do, every area I explore, every mission I complete, leaves me with more blueprints, weapons and gear.  So far I'd say gear progression is about on par with Wildlands, and MTX are completely invisible unless you go out of your way to view them.  Total non-issue.

Just curious, what class you playing as?  I am torn between sharpshooter and panther?  I like the stealth capabilities of panther, but I prefer to use my sniper rifle at long ranges.  I need a blend of a stealthy sniper:)

Sharpshooter.  I love the sniper rifles, and the sharpshooter class ability, while situational, is bloody good.  Besides, one of the stealth perks gives you +80 stealth so I don't feel like I need the Panther ability.

Great, sounds like that perk would balance things out then......think that is what I will roll with then.

One other thing....assuming I didn't somehow miss this in Wildlands, really like how some of the loot/gear/intel is hidden in caves and other hidden locations.  It was driving me crazy why I couldn't find stuff that I could clearly see on my mini-map so I went looking all over the place and I ended up falling in a hole (i.e. hidden cave) that took me to underground stuff.  That enhances some of the search and find, versus just seeing boxes/intel laying around everywhere in open spaces.

Not a major thing, but thought it was a nice touch:)

You aren't locked to a single class, mind.  You can still open the others by spending skill points - but only one is active at any time.  You can switch classes at bivouacs (tactics option).

i have stopped watching and reading reviews on this game, it's a given that it's universally hated by all reviewers and a large group of players.  personally just having fun with it and no regrets purchasing it but i likely have different expectations then all these folks.  never expected it to be a game changer and only thing i originally was disappointed about was lack of teammates but after playing awhile, i am not even bothered by that now.

game likely isn't for everyone and not cheap, so up to each person to gamble...or wait for future sake:)

So...I just had to get it. An experiment, if you will, to test the universally negative reviews against some of the favorable comments I've read here and elsewhere, which on a hunch, I presumed would prove more accurate.

I had a lot of fun with it so far in the 3 to 5 hours I've played. Grim, was of course correct, it does feel like Wildlands and is certainly not a drastic departure from the play style and mechanics. Most importantly, the two major criticisms I have observed are yet to prove a factor in my experience. First, micro transactions. I haven't felt the need to go to the shop to buy anything at all. There is literally gear and weapons everywhere on the map. I'm not sure how anyone could state with seriousness that this is pay to win or shameless micro transaction hell. You can certainly play it that way, but so far, totally unnecessary. Second, AI. Ive played less than 5 hours so it's  hard to say, but I have not seen enemy AI do anything overly or offensively stupid yet. I think it is disengenuous for a reviewer to play for 20+ hours and find 2 or 3 examples of stupid things to the AI did and then deadpan the game based on those few experiences.

Otherwise, yes, the story is dumb, but I haven't really gone on any of the missions yet. I'm just exploring the map, taking down locations of interest, leveling up and collecting gear. The game, like Wildlands, will definitely get repetitive. But so far, I'm enjoying my time with it, think the negative reviews are wildly exaggerated and don't regret giving it shot. Someone needs to seriously investigate the phenonomenon of mob mentality reviewing. It's not fair to the team that put a lot of time and effort into building the experience, it's  not fair to the players who bought the game and who's experience is detracted from due to the poor reviewing, or to potential players, like me, who held off for awhile as a result of all the inaccurate reporting.

I'll add that I do miss not having an AI Squad, but their absence isn't really killing the experience for now. Instead, it's just causing me to play differently. I'm approaching missions more tactically and cautiously, rather than quickly going loud and relying on my team mates to eliminate missed threats or to revive me if I fall. I'm taking more time doing thorough Recon and actually avoiding some threats where the dangers outweigh the benefits of attack. In the meantime, I suspect leveling up my drone may take some of the place of an AI Squad.

I'm on the fence on this one too. I'm still playing Wildlands on and off. From watching the YT videos of gameplay it seems like they've incorporated a bit of the Division elements along with some Metal Gear PP tropes too. Like more sneaking, etc.

My BIG QUESTION. I know you guys haven't played a lot of the game yet, but do you like it better than Wildlands or the same, not as much? I'm trying to decide on this one and really need some input.

My general impression so far is that if you like Wildlands, you will like Breakpoint. Despite the added features and modifications to the mechanics, Breakpoint still plays and feels like Wildlands. As I have said, my biggest let down was the omission of squad based AI. However, as indicated above, I haven't really suffered as a result and I am simply playing a little differently by approaching threats more carefully.

See?  Everything I said up thread was correct!

- MTX are a complete non-issue
- no AI squad mates is not as bad as it sounds
- gameplay is just like Wildlands

Grim: That was well said.  This game is being treated horribly unfairly by the gaming press and Youtubers, even some I usually respect.  Gotta get those precious clicks, I guess.

I don't quite put it at the level of Wildlands yet, but it's very close.  Wildlands has had a large amount of post-launch support, whereas Breakpoint is brand new and does have some issues that need to be worked out.  I have every confidence, however, that it will get there sooner rather than later.

As I keep saying - remember, Wildlands was poorly received on launch too.  Now look at how much respect it has.

Ultimately, too early to know for sure....but if I had to guess, I'll end up liking them roughly the same since very similar to me.  I'll play more of breakpoint going forward since I typically don't play older games and not sure there is anything in Wildlands that would make me go back at this time.

Hmm, after the session I just had, I might have to revise that last message to at least on par with Wildlands!  Wildlands shines in co-op mode, but single player it has never been as much fun as Breakpoint just was.  I was mainly doing story missions so I won't say too much, other than I had some very tense encounters with both military personnel and drones while clearing some pretty interesting locations.  One thing Breakpoint has hugely in its favour is that the locations are extremely well designed and pretty varied too.  Auroa is a beautiful place.  I'm glad that for once in my life I actually have a PC capable of playing these games on ultra settings.

What weapons do you guys use?  I always have a combination of assault rifle and SNR/DMR.  Until today I have mainly been using the TAC50 because it's such a cool, powerful weapon - but it's bolt-action so your first shot had better hit or you're in trouble.  So tonight I've been playing with a G28 Scout and I'm really starting to like it.  (I have the signature Wolves edition by the way - screenshot in the screenshot thread - it has bonuses at night)  I like how quickly it gets rounds off, so you aren't screwed if your first shot doesn't kill.  I've upgraded it to Mk2 so the handling is a lot better - hardly any recoil.

I can't remember the name of my assault rifle but one thing I made sure of is to improve the handling on it, too.  Because of the stealth nature of this game, I feel like low recoil is by far the best characteristic of any weapon; you want to be able to put bullets through skulls as quickly as possible, especially if you're going up against Wolves.

No idea on their name and type, I have an assault rifle and a sniper rifle, that is about all I know:)

Probably nowhere near as far as you to see the really good stuff yet, one more day of this Planet Zoo beta and then back I come.

I have quarantined myself from watching or reading any more reviews on this game:)  I already know every reviewer universally hates it, which hasn't matched my experience so no use anymore.  Sadly, haven't had a ton of time to get much further in the game yet.

So little embarrassed.....noticed UBI having pretty decent sale on division 2, plus had 20% off....ended up buying Divisions 2 for like $20.......after I have said in the past that I don't think I could have liked that game because of the bullet sponge, kind of hooked:)  So far has been a blast to play and actually have been enjoying it.  Now that I have played that and Ghost recon, I know they have some similarities but they really do feel like two different games to me and serve different purposes.  In Ghost I am far more cautious but in Division I just simply blast things.  Both give me very good entertainment, although Division feels much harder as a single player but really like the turrets and drones that can help out.  Without them, I wouldn't have made it past many of the missions.

I was a little surprised how cheap it was already....could have bought the standard for $16, but opted for the version that includes the season one pass, so a little more.

Gear up and fight some Terminators, boyos, in the current Live event going on now.

Gotta say that I just had a whale of a time on a recent mission where two of those bastards just showed up.  Hard to be a sneaky snake when they just walk in and start blasting everyone - wound up having to run around like mad dodging them and dodging Sentinel troops at the same time. Tremendous fun.

(I've owned Breakpoint since shortly after release, just never got back around to playing it after upgrading my card to be able to.)

Personally, I enjoyed the game but once I cleared the main mission, the "faction," stuff just didn't thrill me as much.

Like how they've continued to tinker with the game as well as including A.I. team mates now (but I'm a rugged loner who don't cotton to all that "team shit," anyway).  Coolest bit, iirc, is that you can toggle on or off Terminator activity on the island rather than have to wait for a game specific event to include them.

Hunh.  So I finally can run out of bald guys to shoot?  Weird.

p.s. Kind of an interesting concept after some play time.  So far, I've just iced Bodarks and their tactics and whatnot is a slap in the face if you're not prepared - didn't help that I was rusty as hell with the control scheme.  Enjoy the increased pressure you get from the new dudes you encounter.  Still, the play is kind of like faction missions which is a smidge "meh."  Real plus is the "Vietnam," clothing/equipment pack which means I can spec out my boy with ALICE gear and BDU camo scheme (which is what God intended for our camo to be) and he looks like an 80's/90's era Ranger type.

Wonder if I can turn on the "Terminator," mode while this is going on for added lulz.
