Back in the 70's the USN worried about massed attacks by Bears.  They were planned to surround a Task Force and on command sprint at the ships.  They'd fire their Anti-Ship missiles at 300nm (I think).
Tom Clancy used this in Red Storm Rising.  The Blackjack's speed made this harder to defend against.

I don't think the Blackjack was ever intended to be used in the naval strike role. The Sovs used the Backfire in that role. In RSR, Clancy depicted a Backfire strike with Badgers launching Kelt drones as a decoy to draw off the Tomcats.

Yes, I think you are right.  Thought the Blackjack was the Backfire.
