If you watch the whole thing, they spliced in bits of footage from Empire and Jedi to create scenes that bridge the gap between Rogue One and ANH. It's kinda neat, but not really necessary.

There was a mission in - I think it was X-Wing Alliance - where you run interference for the Tantive IV as it has a rendezvous with Bothan spies to pick up the plans to the Death Star. You have to cover it while the transfer takes place, and then Tantive IV hypers out...to the Tatooine system, where it gets jumped by an Imp SD, and the rest is celluloid history.
