Finding some of the Punic War battle sites is actually challenging.  The Metaurus, where the Carthaginians were crushed, is not hard.  Asking about Cannae in Naples, led to confused glances and stage whispers.
One poor guide thought there might be communists there.  Needless to say anything over ten miles away from Naples was terra incognita.  Something like the old mapmakers putting dragons and sea serpents in unexplored area, labelled "Here be monsters."
