Title: We Need a 2015-2016 Hockey thread
Post by: endfire79 on October 04, 2015, 07:09:32 PM
Hockey season is here!  Please sticky this thread.

To start things off, the Penguins have Phil Kessel on a lineup with Crosby.  This I'm actually eager to see how it develops.  It's got potential,  and I'm thinking of adding Kessel in my pool with the expectations he's going to score lots with Crosby on his side.  On the other hand, he's $10 million, and his +/- was horrible the last few years (albeit it was with the Leafs, can the Pens help turn this 'round?)  Thoughts?

Being on a team capable of outscoring the opposition should help the +/- a bit.  :)

Actually, Pittsburgh's D does worry me this year. The fact that Derrick Pouliot came in so out of shape that he couldn't beat out Ian Cole or Ben Lovejoy for a job is not exactly impressive for their supposed best D prospect. Of course, if Kris Letang and Olli Maatta can just stay healthy all year...

...yeah, they're probably doomed.

As for Kessel, he should be a legit 40 goal threat barring injury.

Yeah Pouliot didn't make the cut, and Dupuis is going to miss 4-5 weeks now.

For the picks, I had to swing for the fences, otherwise you just end up picking the same main forwards.  Still think it will be fun to see these two Pens lines playing.

Also keen on seeing what happens with rookies Connor McDavid and Jeff Eichel. Both are on teams that are down and out, but have nowhere to go but up.

Wow, save of the night by Lundqvist

...and a goal by Kessel (come 49 to go  baby!)

Terrific Don Cherry impersonation by PK Subban of the Habs ROTFL (he's a good player... but he's not Bobby Orr  :2funny:)  Check the signature table piano hands movements:

For the people who have no clue who Don Cherry is  (color commentator on CBC Hockey Night in Canada, older than Windy):

Bruins' Marchand out with concussion after walking into  Weise's elbow over the weekend.

Much as I love to hate Marchard, he can hustle (Gallagher plays similar style) and would love him on my team.

Habs power play:  with so many power play advantages and scoring changes, habs power plays is absolutely shameful after 2 games. The opposing team knows what to expect and they just stick guys up front to push away the blue liners...

There are rumors that Boston is shopping both Marchand and Chara, with moves becoming a possibility once they're both healthy.

I don't watch very much hockey, but, I watched a lot of the Bruins run for the Cup a few years back.  The one thing I remember vividly is, how the hell does a guy as big as Chara not fall over on skates?!

The 'Canes finally won, and looked pretty good doing it for most of the game.

They had a rookie score on his first-ever NHL shift about 55sec into the 1st, in Detroit, where the kid grew up.  Kinda cool for him.

Eichel seems more comfortable early on, but I think a lot of that has to do with the market they're in. Edmonton is 100% hockey 100% of the time. The pressure never goes away because the fans don't ever move on. Eichel gets to relax a bit.

- Max Domi (Arizona Coyotes) is doing pretty well in his first year (yes he is Tie Domi's son).

- The Canadiens benched Semin two games in a row (last night against Calgary they put Byron instead, who got a goal).  I don't blame Semin for the habs losing to Vancouver and then Edmonton right after (they blew that game themselves and threw Price under the bus), but I'm wondering if the management is already losing patience with him.

- I'm worried about the Pens.  Hopefully this is a slow start, and Crosby and the gang will get rolling soon.

- The Ducks are in trouble - this team can't score.  Goalie Andersen is not the problem, lack of offense with Getzlaf and Perry not producing. Can't say much for rest of offense either.

- that old guy who intercepted a puck tossed to a kid from the Pens bench - what a turd!  Nice to see the Pens personally deliver another puck to the kid and a Crosby jersey though.

Pittsburgh has gotten off to a weak start...but at least they aren't Anaheim! What is going on with THAT team is beyond me. Corey Perry has seemingly forgotten how to play hockey.

Chicago is 6-5 right now, and that record is only good enough to put them SIXTH in the Central Division. That's absolutely insane.

What does Tampa do moving forward? Stamkos is an impending free agent, but so are Ben Bishop (#1 goalie), Victor Hedman (#1 Defenseman), the entire 2nd line (Johnson, Palat and Kucherov) and Alex Killorn. There is no way in Hell that they can keep everyone. Do they keep everybody and take one last run? Do they move some players before the deadline to get something back?

Like everyone outside of the Toronto area, I delight in the awful play of the Leafs. Of course, every sports network still shoves their games in front of us as much as possible.  :knuppel2: :tickedoff:

Hell.  Yes.

http://www.theplayerstribune.com/a-guy-like-me/

QuoteIn the beginning, at least, I just wanted the entire thing to go away. We were on a really fun run in Phoenix, and I was starting to feel like I was part of something. The Coyotes had been picked to finish dead last — but in the first half of the season, we'd surprised a lot of people. We were this strange collection of underdogs, and I fit right in. And I fit right in by doing what I do best: being a locker room guy, a no-nonsense guy, and a quiet yet effective enforcer.

One of the reasons I've made it as long as I have in the league is because I specifically know I'm not an All-Star.

So when they asked me to make a statement — nudging the fan vote in another direction and denouncing the John Scott "movement" — I did it without hesitation. I told the fans, "Listen. I don't deserve this. Vote for my teammates." And I was telling the truth.

But while I don't deserve to be an All-Star, I also don't think I deserve to be treated like I've been by the league throughout this saga. I'm an NHL player — and, whatever my set of skills may be, that I'm an NHL player is no accident. I genuinely believe that when I'm on the ice, or even just the bench, I make my teammates feel safe to do what they do best.

Does that make me an elite player? God, no. Am I going to be nervous as hell when I step onto the ice on Sunday — and I'm playing three-on-three, with Tarasenko whizzing by over one shoulder, and Toews putting the moves on me over the other? Of course. Will I be the worst skater in the game? I mean, probably.

But at the same time: this isn't Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I'm not some random person off the street, and I didn't win a golden ticket to "play hockey with the stars." I won an internet fan vote, sure. And at some point, without question, it was a joke. It might even finish as a joke. But it didn't start as one. It started with a very small pool, out of a very small pool, out of the very, very smallest pool of hockey players in the world: NHLers. That was the vote. A fan vote, an internet vote — but a vote from among the 700 or so best hockey players in North American professional sports.

And I'm one of them.

If the league thought this was an embarrassment, pretty much all of the players I've encountered have thought otherwise. I've gotten texts from so many guys saying the same thing: "You should go."

and even better, considering this was written before the All-Star Game
QuoteEventually, when they're old enough, I'm sure I'll tell them the whole story. About that one crazy January, when they were younger: when our family moved all of a sudden; when we stopped howling, ahhh-oooooh; when the twins were born; and when their father made the news and played that weird game in Nashville.

It'll be a pretty good story, I hope.

Yeah, it's a pretty good story:
http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/14687094/john-scott-delivers-twice-nhl-pacific-all-stars

QuoteJohn Scott sat on his teammates shoulders while fans chanted "M-V-P! M-V-P!" and the NHL finally got out of the way.

The people spoke up for Scott once again Sunday night in making the career journeyman enforcer the All-Star MVP as a write-in candidate, after voting him into the 3-on-3 All-Star tournament as captain of the Pacific Division.

Scott scored twice during the tournament, which brought cheers from fans and smiles from teammates, who relished every moment along with the gentle giant and his goofy grin.

Scott captained the Pacific to a 1-0 win in the championship.

So, Pittsburgh wanted a defenseman, and they traded for...JUSTIN SCHULTZ?! Justin f'ing SCHULTZ! He's atrocious! They have up something for that idiot?!?! I can play better defense than Justin Schultz, and I'm being 100% sincere when I say that...and I can't skate! Sure, I'd just be standing there and sort of shuffling about, but at least I understand that I should be trying to impede the other team in some way!

If the Edmonton Oilers have had it with a defenseman's incompetence, maybe you shouldn't trade for that guy.

Actually, he's had a nice comeback year this season from a scary run of concussions. It was bad enough that he actually had a stroke a couple of years ago that doctors attributed to his concussion history. I really like the guy as a player, but there comes a point where maybe someone should make him retire. Dude, YOU HAD A STROKE.

I think this is a good step for him and the Canes, since it really wasn't working for either of them any more. They clearly need to hit the reset button, and he needs to show what he's got and sign somewhere else in the off season.

No Canadian teams in the playoffs this year. Ouch.

Yep. All sorts of ludicrous 'HOW HAS OUR GAMES PASSED US BY?!' editorials showing up. And of course, they're ignoring the basic point...it isn't our game. European countries have often surpassed Canada in recent years. The U.S. has certainly caught up as well.

I don't hate the Pens the way I do the Flyers, but I am rooting for TB in the series.

Tampa played like crap tonight.  They let that poor kid face 40+ shots.  What did they THINK was going to happen?!  Kessell, Hagelin, and Letaing were everywhere!  And Tampa STILL has the worst home crowd in playoff hockey.  Pisses me off every time an enemy sniper buries one and the crowd goes nuts.  Bastards!!!

I'll have to duck and cover...I am a big pens fan:)

Pleased with what I have seen so far, but series far from over.  It was odd hearing Tampa fans cheering both teams, but guessing that is because most people in Tampa are transplants from other areas of the country.

Friday nights game is big for both teams, but thinking a must win for Tampa at this point....

Agree on the must win.  And the transplants thing, too.  It was worse when they played the Blackhawks last year.  Then, there was no home team, "Let's go Bolts!"  Just constant cheering for Chicago :(

DAM-NIT!!!!!!!!!  F*ing Penguins!!!  I knew  the Bolts were sunk when the studio guy said as the third period was about to start, "The Penguins haven't won a Game 7 in this building ever."

Really fun Finals this year. Two teams who have benefited largely from the development of some young kids this year to finally provide supplementary depth.

If it was anyone but the Pens, I'd be cheering hard for the Sharks to win a Cup.

Not the Cup Finals I was hoping for, but two very good teams. Should be fun to watch.

It will be fun to watch the speed and scoring potential of these two teams....I haven't watched the Sharks much so don't know a ton about them, but from what I saw they look dangerous and playing very good at the right time.

But of course will be strongly supporting the pens!  This might be one of the last seasons where all their core is still intact.....Crosby, Malikin, fluery  (although likely not playing), Kunitz, LeTang.....

Also looks like the majority of experts picking the Sharks.....that's ok, these are the same people who picked New York, Washington, and Tampa over the Penguins as well....hope the streak continues:)

As expected, that was a fast and fun game from both teams and if the rest of the games play the same, it will be a good series.  Glad the Penguins got game one, but I think this series will go back and forth all the way until the end.  Penguins still able to play their speed game, while at the same time piling up a ton of shots.

Looking forward to the next game and hoping Pittsburgh can take both home games before heading out west...

I think both of these teams are capable of getting hot and reeling off a couple of wins in a row, regardless of venue...although certainly being down 0-2 would be a tough hole to get out of, I think they still could do it....I am hoping we get the opportunity to see if they could:)

It was a fun game last night, really seemed like the Pens could have scored 10 more goals with all the chances they had, including wide open nets....but I'll take any victory:)

Would love to see a repeat before some of the older (Malkin, Fluery, Kunitz),  players start to leave or get moved....

I wish the Sharks had won so that Pavelski, Thornton, and Marleau had a chance to win a cup, but I'm not unhappy the Pens won.

If the Pens wouldn't have won it, I could have been comfortable with the Sharks taking it....but besides their goaltender, none of their stars really showed up in this series.

Martin Jones was unreal. San Jose's defense, on the other hand, were awful. They couldn't maintain puck possession in Pittsburgh's end on a consistent basis, and they kept mis-playing it in their own end.
