So......
I've played on various consoles over the years. Not my own, but friends and family and I have to be honest, I never really enjoyed it. I found looking around very difficult to get used to. FPS's were particularly bad for me.
However, with my new phone contract and it came with a free PS4 and the game Uncharted which I was very surprised about because the phone contract is only £18pm.
Well, I had every intention of selling said PS4 for a couple of hundred quid. However, once I got it, I decided to unpack it and give it a go.
Man - have consoles come a long way! The gaming experience was actually quite good and the graphics are excellent.
So now I've purchased my beloved Madden NFL 2017 - a game I really enjoyed until they decided to remove it from the PC 10 years ago in 2007. I've also picked up No Man's Sky as it's a bargain.
It's not going to take over from my PC gaming, but it can be used as a supplement for games I may not get for the PC.
Damn. That's a helluva phone deal.
Seriously. Great deal.
Aye. Virgin Media kind of throw things at their customers from time to time.
Contract is £18pm for 24 months for
- 4G
- 300 minutes
- 1GB Data (I'm in a lot of WiFi hotspots)
- Unlimited texts
Sony Xperia XA1
Sony Playstation 4
...and then £1pm when the 24 months is up. It seemed a crazy deal to me and I was sure I'd call and they'd say "Oh sorry - it was while stocks last and they've gone". To my utter amazement, they had some in stock!
Kind of chuffed.
That's pretty sweet.
Here in the States we consumers really get the short stick when it comes to wireless and internet, and I'll be polite and not say where the short stick goes.
Right up the tookus
Excellent deal JD. Welcome to the wonderful world of console gaming. It certainly won't take up all your gaming time but it's still a good experience.
I guess I'll be firing up No Man Sky tonight - see what all the fuss was about
Wow. Sweet deal!
My son has a PS4 but he never uses it. He has Destiny and Fallout 4. I've been wanting to play Fallout 4 but I don't have time to go get it nor time to play it. :(
I've been done with consoles, honestly, since my old Xbox. I had a 360 but hardly touched it.
Now I really hate Verizon. >:(
I want to get a console at some point but can't decide which to get.
I'm meh about a console...we have Verizon ourselves and haven't really had issues with them. Except for me getting shitloads of robo-calls, ever-increasing, over the last six months or so. Driving me nuts.
I'm due to get a new phone in October. I've had this Galaxy Note 5 for a couple of years. Debating whether I need to switch to an iPhone or stick with my Android.
Nice going JD! :bd:
You can shoot me a friend request if you like; Yskonyn on PSN as well.
Destiny 2 is coming up Sept 6th; really got me hyped!
I'm not registered on the network yet Yskonyn - I haven't looked into that aspect yet. If/when I do, I'll fire a request across. Do you like/play Madden NFL? I'm getting 17 and I imagine playing against a real opponent on that game might be a buzz. But like I said - I haven't looked into online gaming on the PS4 yet...there's a cost, right?
As for No Mans Sky. I played it solid for 4 hours yesterday. That time was spent working out what to do (I had to find things to get my ship fixed and fueled up) and then get off the planet, got to an Alien Beacon and then a space station.
So far, it's pretty much fly here, run around discovering stuff, gathering resources you need...and that's it. It kept me locked in for 4 hours because I wanted to explore the planet and get my ship working. Now that's done and I've been to another planet and noted that whilst it's different, it's the same things, I'm not sure what's ahead in gaming terms.
I'll be on it tonight for a few hours - it strikes me as one of those instances where you think a game has really grabbed you and got that addiction thing going on, only to realise that you saw everything pretty much in the first few hours.
Time will tell.
Games as NMS and also Elite Dangerous are only fun if you are into that kind of experience and are willing and able to write your own story. I play both games and like 'em both for different reasons (atm I am more into ED) but there's certainly a certain circle of actions you are going through again and again. If you can see that as the road which can lead you to your own experience in a really huge galaxy (or universe as it is called in NMS) then it is less an "oh the same things!" feeling but more one step further to interesting stuff that may await you out there. To make screenshots along the way or even small video is a great way to create your personal story. But again, such games are only fun for a special kind of gamer.
Madden 18 was just released today....picked it up but I play on Xbox. Madden is madden....if your not looking for a complete simulation of football, it's still fun to play. Graphics are great this year in my opinion and gameplay good enough. I only play sports games on the console like madden and NHL, otherwise do most stuff on Pc.
Nope, only play Fifa casually but not Madden nor NHL.
I just bought Madden 18 and played it over the weekend.
That game has got deep. The training options themselves are huge, nevermind the RPG element of your players and coach.
I have to be honest, I don't play the defensive game. One thing I always found tricky was playing defence. So I play that option for offence only - a god send for me. As the Broncos I'm 4 and 0 - playing on Rookie mind you O0 - for my first season. As this game goes on, I may well start delving into the defence...but there's so much to take in. The offence practices are trying to give you information on when to play what and why - and there's sooooo much involved. Not to mention learning the various moves that your controlling player can implement.
The defensive side is simply going to add to that mental burden. So I'll stay away for a while. I'm kind of happy at the moment letting the AI play my defence for me.
The game is just huge.
I just grabbed a PS4 myself. I have madden, Persona 5 and Horizon:Zero Dawn.
Not sure what else I may get but that's a helluva lot of gaming for me. Persona 5 is probably the best of the series so far. Characters aren't as good as 4 but the gameplay is a lot tighter.
I got a PS4 last year as well. I'm extremely happy with it, it's such a good console. The whole experience is fantastic, although I will say the online store is a bit lacking; why no wishlist? Why no gifting? And so on. But that's pretty minor.
The graphical capabilities are absolutely stunning. I laugh whenever I see someone criticise the graphics of a new game - even "crap" graphics on a modern PS4 game are usually gorgeous. It's more than enough for me, anyway.
Of all the games I've bought over the last year, the one I've been playing the most is Diablo 3 which I already had on the Xbox 360. :/ My boy has just got into it though, and my lady has always enjoyed playing it with me. I guess I'll be getting a third controller soon so we can all play together.
Oh yeah, and my daughter plays The Sims 4 exclusively on it, despite my getting the super-duper-fabulous (not to mention expensive) limited edition of Persona 5 for her last year. So yeah, we have a top of the line console, and it's used to play Diablo 3 and The Sims 4!
I went on a little bit of a shopping spree the past couple of weeks...
Grabbed Disgaea 5, Bloodborne, and Monster Hunter World.
Don't have much time into any of them but will start putting it in once I finish Xenoblade Chronicals 2 on the Switch.
How did you find Horizon: Zero Dawn? I love everything about it except the combat, I just don't "get" it at all. Whenever I'm knee-deep in a pack of robots they just stun-lock me into oblivion. It's so frustrating because I absolutely love the game otherwise.
Shout out to Nier: Automata by the way - a genuine masterpiece in my opinion!

I have Neir Automata on the PC. I concur. So far I'm ok on Horizon's combat. Not sure what your doing but I usually try to avoid pulling too much aggro. If i do I run. Being stealthy and using terrain is imperative too.
Perhaps that's where I'm going wrong; drawing too much agro. Aren't you supposed to play it like you're a killing machine then? Because that's how I was trying to do it.
Well it's not a full on stealth game but you also can't BJ Blazkowicz it either.
Typically I try to stealth to a good position, set some traps, and then aim with my best elemental arrow against target's weakness.
If I'm lucky I only aggro the machine i hit and can potential kill with arrows. If I am unlucky but only have the target aggro'd then I run to a trap and then turn and stabby stab. If it goes tits up I RLH and fight some weaker mobs to get parts back.
Hmm OK, I'll give that a try next time I fire it up. Thanks mate.
So I've quickly gotten hooked on Monster Hunter World. It's time consuming and the action component is strong but man is it fun. It also has a frustration factor but typically if you are getting beat you are undergeared so the solution is pretty straightforward.
I quite fancy Monster Hunter World, but currently all of my playtime is dedicated to Warframe and The Division. It's probably next on my list though.

Let me know if you get into it; maybe we can run some hunts.
Add me as well guys! Would love to get some Hunting ! O0
I'd love to group with y'all when I do get it, but it will probably be a while yet. I'm nowhere near level 30 in The Division, and I'll be playing Warframe for months most likely. :)
If you guys want to add me to your friends list. PSN handle is same there as here.

I've been told that if I "only" have one hour to play per session, it isn't worth getting Monster Hunter World. Thoughts?

I'm still loving it.
In all honesty some of the initial story missions may take longer but hunts all have time limits and the max is 50 minutes.
The early game will be pretty tough as your gear sucks and it will take time getting use to all of the systems.
That said, once you figure it out the pattern follows:
Theoretically you can pick a hunt, optimize gear for the monster you will be fighting, eat (this is important), kill said monster, post hunt inventory management and upgrades in an hour.
One thing this does not have is a pause so if you are interrupted a lot that will cause issues. Even if you play offline it runs it like it's on-line. each hunt can be considered an instance.
Anyway, that's my $.02. If I get a hunt or three in a night I'm happy.
Thanks Jamus, I appreciate that. I've never been so conflicted on whether to buy a game or not!
I had some unexpected expense today so it may have a to wait a few weeks, but I'm leaning toward picking it up once again. :)
Fully understand there Huw - I'm on a buying moratorium for now also (although this month's Humble Monthly is tempting). I grabbed MHW before I dropped the hammer on myself.
Well I just did the weekly banking and it turns out things are better than I thought. Also, after wondering whether to buy MHW ever since it came out, I decided that it will bug me forever if I don't just buy the bloody thing. So I did. :)
Nice!
Let me know if your around and we can get on some multiplayer hunts.
Will do mate. My sessions will probably be few and far between but I intend to play whenever possible. I really like what I've seen so far. The combat isn't as janky as I feared it might be and I'm amazed at how beautifully designed the world is. I'm looking forward to learning all the different systems and figuring out my build etc.
Unfortunately I decided to make my character look like the biggest cock imaginable and I regret it now. :DD Maybe I should start again before I do too much.
