A very good, if short, review Gusington. No pun intended. Enderal does look delicious but can you start the mod at any level or do you require a new Skyrim start to play?
Title: Re: New Weekly Column - "What's Gus Playing (This Week)?"
Post by: Gusington on October 03, 2017, 07:42:37 AM
Players start as a brand spanking new character, doesn't matter how far you have progressed in Skyrim. Think of it as an entirely new game, built from Skyrim templates and then tempered in mystical Elder Scrolls flames.

BTW the Game of the Year edition of Witcher 3 is available at Steam right now for 19.99...

I can empathize with this poor guy. Killing horrid monsters, sleeping with buxom babes, grabbing ton of cool loot, and wielding a big-ass sword while flying through the air doing killing moves can't be as much fun as it sounds. He probably never gets to have a day off or kicks back and watch the game on the telly while eating some good wings and a beer. And all those potions! Damn. Probably lives his whole life having to pee. And how can he even get to it in all that armor? Poor bastard. But, hey. Beats the shit out of working at 7-11.

The first Witcher was off-putting for me because of the language. I know this came from an eastern European dev, I think, so the English was very odd. It constantly took me right out of the story. The gameplay was alright, but the dialogue was  ???.

Enjoy your segment Gus, keep it up. It seems i have the first two Witcher games[don't remember buying #2] Steam says i have 59 minutes into Witcher 1 but i vaguely remember something about the combat control system bothering me but don't remember what about it that put me off. Is the combat system the same in each game?

It's the month of scares you need to pull out all the stops for your next segment, and go all in on a creepy game, a spectacularly scary game >:D
Title: Re: New Weekly Column - "What's Gus Playing (This Week)?"
Post by: Gusington on October 18, 2017, 08:25:24 PM
^Last week I covered Darkwood! The next one out is not creepy...apologies.

The combat is different in all three games. First game is a top-down, almost isometric game. I enjoyed it a lot. The themes were the same there as in the later games. Dark, eastern European feel, lots of monster variety and bewbs.

I really wanted to like The Witcher 2 but could not figure out the combat at all. It was the game's first foray in to a first or third person point of view. I stopped playing the tutorial after getting my pale white arse handed to me repeatedly and haven't gone back. I would like to one day.

The Witcher 3, for me, is definitely the best in the series. Combat is streamlined (some say dumbed down by I like it) and the game is just bursting with dark lore. Think Skyrim done by Robert Smith.

Probably close to being my all time favorite TW game and the only one I completed two Grand Campaigns to victory as Spain and Holy Roman Empire. Loved the way that gunpowder completely changed the battlefield dynamics. There's now a 'Europa Barbarorum' mod for TW2 BTW. I'm tempted.

Nice read Gus. Was that sex in a rowboat? The Witcher must have SOME talents and skills to do it in a rowboat.  ???  If they really wanted to make it scary, they could've had the babe in the rowboat turn into the wraith in black half-way through. That'd make me soil somebody else's drawers. I think I enjoy you playing this game more than I would.  ;D

I'll get the tech support department on it right away.

Cockles are hard to get working on a Monday after a major holiday. They're usually hung-over and broke after spending all their money on gaming sales and hookers. Cut them some slack. They are no worse than the broke and hung-over garbage collectors that don't show-up on Mondays until about Tuesday.

^Of course you do...don't even try to resist mirth's cockles of rage.

It's just a matter of time until Medieval 3 TW. It might be a few years but it, or some variation of it, is imminent.

Get a copy of Medieval 2 in the meantime and mod it. At 10+ years old it is still really engrossing.

I know, and I'm not really complaining.  I'm actually downright giddy for CA's first "Sagas" title Thrones of Britannia; it will at least partially slake my thirst for a new game set in the period.

Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't still desperately yearn for a brand-new Medieval "Eras" title: with the epic Grand Campaign we so love, a wondrously huge map stretching from Dublin to Baghdad, and with all the excellent improvements & refinements CA has added to the series these last few years.  The entire studio seems to have collectively taken a level in badass (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TookALevelInBadass) with the Warhammer games, and I would dearly love to see them give the same treatment to a new historical game set in medieval Europe/Asia/Africa.

My impression of Medieval 2 was that it suffered two of the same problems as Rome 1 (a game everyone here knows I hate with the fire of a thousand suns): brain-dead AI, and far too many siege battles (even compared to the other games in the franchise).  What say you?

The Stainless Steel mod actually improves the AI. It's not a Clausewitz level braintrust, but it does perform some admirable feats on the campaign map. Not as much tactically, but every now and then it will surprise you there as well.

I was going bug nutty with my assassins and pissed off Hungary and they declared war. Then Novgorod jumped in as I was now a target of opportunity. Then during last night's session Venice jumped in too! But I stymied their plans by obliterating their army 👍

Martok - I may have spoke too soon about Stainless Steel's tactical AI. During several siege battles last night here I was defending, I witnessed the attacking force split their army and try to take my city from multiple points on the tactical map, in attempt to divide my defending force.

It failed, multiple times, but still...good show.

Ugh.  Inquisitors shouldn't even be in the damn series; they're just too powerful.  A neat idea in concept, but they never worked very well when implemented -- or rather, they worked a little *too* well.  I hope that in Medieval 3, they're left out entirely.

Thanks Gus, I appreciate the info.  Trying to take a city at multiple points is indeed an improvement.

Can I be honest with you? I fired it up a few days ago and was just 'this leaves me cold.' I was set to really dig in but just could not get excited. I think that once I actually start playing that may change. I am going to try work it in to my current Viking gaming and reading kick and play as Norsca as my first faction but from afar TW Warhammer doesn't moisten the old loins the way the historical games do. I'm hoping that actually starting a campaign changes that. I'm also very curious about the Mortal Empires campaign but don't wanna drop the cash if I wind up hating it.

Clearly I have given this some thought...too much :/

Barely scratched the surface myself, Dwarves for an 'easy' intro. Close enough to previous titles to play without a lot of new stuff to learn but just a more fantasy take on things. I think the real difference will be the 'evil' factions able to recruit monsters and spreading corruption and chaos. So far the Advisory Tips are very helpful at easing you into the new stuff.

I think your self-assessment is pretty spot-on, Gus -- both in that you're over-thinking things, but also in that you'll start to enjoy the game if you simply dive in and actually start playing it.

A bit of advice:  Ignore all the hype, and set aside your expectations; that's what I did.  I fear you may be under the burden of trying to force yourself to like a game just because so many others (including myself) have lavished praise on it.  Don't place yourself under that burden.

Just play the game, and take it as it is.  You'll either enjoy it, or you won't.  I suspect you will, but that won't happen if you're pressuring yourself (consciously or unconsciously) to do so.  :)

Thanks Martok. l know a lot of guys here enjoy Celtic/Viking/Druid history. And clearly that's a huge component of Hellblade. But an equally big part of it is the psychogical side and I am not sure how many would enjoy that aspect. It is very disturbing. Plus it is very unforgiving and dfficult. It does keep drawing me back though. Other similarly themed games seem cartoony by comparison. Very dark stuff.

I really liked the article Gus  O0 I'm definitely into that kind of history in the game. The game is probably a head trip that I'd sooner not take though! But I can appreciate the game designers trying to get us to see a different, interesting point of view. I'd love to have a try of a similar game, that's just not so trippy. I thought the length of the article was great :) But that's just me, these days I seem to only have the patience for short and snappy articles. I'm sure other guys around here don't mind reading much longer articles :) And to be honest, on a good day, when I can concentrate, I like reading the longer articles too  O0

I enjoyed the read though :) Great review  O0

Nice read Gus. I maybe worse at FPS' than Flight Sims but not by much. I loved the Medal of Honor series on the old PS2 back in the day. So, I'm assuming that your using a game controller to play this?

Damn! A FPS with mouse and keyboard? I was able to play Skyrim that way but I didn't think other FPS' would work like that. And it handled OK for you? Maybe I need to look at some of those games again.

What's frightening to me is how good the AI is in this game. It 'reacts' to my moves and doesn't do stupid things like leave it's armies tied to it's cities or build masses of cheap Butterfly units for me to walk all over. It's trying to beat me Dammit! And it does most times.  :hide:

I got lost in the couch cushions one night. I couldn't tell the difference. Sad part was neither could she. ::)    Anyway.... Too bad about he loss Gus but Norsica's supposed to be tough to play. I want to do an 'Empire' campaign too but I'm still plugging away as the Dwarves. And after trying out the Radious mod, I definitely favor vanilla over it. Radious leads to too much of a 'Bum Rush' from all the factions with huge armies too early. Vanilla is more-better paced. Great game and no shame in the loss-- I've been there.

Prefer vanilla over Radious in this case, eh? Inconceivable.

It's either Empire or Dwarves for me next. Difficult to decide.

I basically write this article for you, Slash. I was whole-heartedly in to the Tomb Kings until around turn 150 when the campaign became really SAMEY. Hoping for more/better luck when I undertake a dwarf campaign, as well as dark elf and vampire campaigns. You can be a constipated Heath Ledger's ghost vexing the souls of tradtional publishing employees if you want to swing that far.

BB I sent you an email on this - in the current Dishonored bit, I mentioned an 'elderly Corvo' - this should be changed to 'elderly Daud.'

Don't feel too bad Gus. I felt the same way you did when I found out GOG was selling SSI's Gold Box series.  :D  Then I tried playing them again and damn, had times changed! The interface was a fight in itself and the graphics that got me all hot just left me squinting at the screen to make out what I was looking at. Plus, it was damned hard. Sometimes you just can't go back man.  :-[
