Seven inches across is respectable.

The Irish had St. Patrick drive all the snakes out of Ireland. Don't you Brits have an equivalent for huge-ass spiders?

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

QuoteUsing a lighter to kill the bug, he started a blaze that quickly engulfed the gas pump.

He somehow escaped serious injury and the gas station's damage was contained to one pump, which was destroyed. The incident was recorded at a Center Line gas station.

Employee Susan Adams kept calm and hit the gas automatic stop button and quickly called the Center Line fire department.

The man grabbed a nearby extinguisher and put out the flames before firefighters arrived. Later he admitted what he did, saying he spotted a spider on his gas tank and because he's deathly afraid of the critters.

Spiders are learning to work together.

QuoteMerchant said while rare, it is not unheard of that such massive web-works may appear once in a while. For example, he said, in 2007 the media reported about a giant spider web found at Lake Tawakoni State Park, about 35 miles from Rowlett.

"At the time, the discovery of the web was more than creepy – it was a revelation to many arachnologists — spider experts," he said. "That's because spiders typically work alone to construct their webs. So finding spiders working together to build a huge web in what was more of a cooperative or 'communal' scenario was a real surprise for many experts."
