Probably understandable because the ancient times are considered a golden age.  Of course, these folks forget that most everyone lived in a situation where everyone was just this side of disaster.  Life could be brutish and short.

I remember an article in the Stars & Stripes newspaper back in Germany in the 80s about US soldiers who were "proud pagans" and were fighting against the Army's characterization of them as "atheist" just b/c they believed in Hellenistic gods.
