So any word on the next doctor?

Benedict Cumberbutch? (come on, he's already in nearly everything, so he might as well be the Doctor as well)

DoctorQuest

I suspect they will keep us in suspense like they do with every regeneration.

Cumberbatch would be awesome but I want him to keep making "Sherlock" episodes. And "Doctor Strange 2."

They conveniently forgot about the limit on regenerations. Otherwise, the one after Capaldi would be the last Doctor.

Oh ye of little faith. Why do I suspect if ratings stay up there they will figure out a workaround.

I vote Peter Dinklage for the next Dr Who. Brilliant in GoT, so he is.

They've already backed off on the regeneration limit.

Dammit Carl!

Wasn't there some handwavey bit during Smith's run where they reset the regeneration limit?

There was something along those lines. They've basically hinted there is no limit.

#8 regenerated into the War Doctor (who kind of doesn't count as a "Doctor" per se); regenerated into Ninth Doctor after the Time War, he lasted one season; regenerated into the Tenth Doctor; who cobbled up a way to regenerate into himself; final regeneration would be the Eleventh Doctor.

However, as he was dying the hiding Time Lords sent him a massive burst of power which restocked his regens. So Capaldi, while the Twelfth Doctor per se is the first of a new batch of thirteen. (In theory, if the show runs that long again and they don't have the character burn out a bunch of regenerations as a plot device. The Doctor's Wife used up all her remaining regenerations. But there are ways around that, too -- the Master showed up in the series back in the Third Doctor's day having used up all his regenerations already, and looking for a way to become immortally all-powerful, but he found ways to shapeshift and body-hack. He hasn't been a Time Lord strictly since... the Fourth Doctor's days?)

Twelve quipped at one point in his first season (fighting a ghost mummy, sort of) that he might just keep regenerating forever if he was slain, but that sounds like braggadochio.

Anyway. Now that Capaldi will be leaving, I'm taking the opportunity to batch up on his run, and I'm one episode away from the two-part finale to his first season. (About to do the instant-forest episode.) Just from hearing and reading things the past few years I know a lot of what the season-arc villain is up to and who she is already.

Capaldi is entertaining, but he's my least favorite of the modern Doctors (including John Hurt's War Doctor). And not high on the list for me including the classic Doctors either. Still, I'm only one season in (almost). He might grow on me in seasons two and three.

Basically there is no limit on regens. The show runners have found any number of ways to justify it.

I think the Master is still a Time Lord. He was given a new set of regenerations by the Council of Time Lords in exchange for his help in one of the classic series episodes.
