Place to discuss all things footie-related for the 17-18 season (and the back half of the MLS season...)

can you imagine a former player in a US sport tweeting this about a coach/manager getting fired?  ;D

US bombed out of the next World Cup. We're not going for the first time since 1990.

Time to focus on the Olympics, and see if we can't steal a Gold Cup or two.

That sucks.
US didn't even qualify for play-off matches?
What went wrong?

Nope, finished 5th in a 6-team group

There's a 20k character limit on posts here, so there's not enough time to elaborate.

Dug themselves a hole with stupid tactics in Columbus vs Mexico that put them in a hole to start qualifying
Played like shit against Costa Rica in New Jersey and lost a game that Costa Rica never should've been competitive in
Lost 2-1 to T&T on the last night when just a tie would've locked up an auto-qualifying place, b/c coach got too cute and put too many attackers out there and left the best central defender on the bench.

I watched an interesting documentary on bbc one a few nights back with Alan Shearer . I remember shearers glory days playing for England , always thought he was a great player :)

This was all about the link between heading the ball and developing dementia later on in life . I thought he handled it really well . It's intresting that the states have banned heading the ball in training for under 11s , I think that's a great idea , I think it should be rolled out in the UK.

Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts on this ? Ban heading the ball entirely , or not ?

can't / won't ban it entirely, but limiting it for younger kids does 2 things - it's a good safety issue, but it also discourages coaches from just kicking high balls toward the kid who happened to hit is growth spurt first, and force them to learn to play the right way

That sounds like it's the best way to coach kids . I don't think heading the ball will ever be banned in the sport , and I think gameplay would suffer if they ever did . But like you said , they probably won't ever ban it .....or can't ban it .

It looks like the FA in the UK are brushing this issue under the carpet though . Probably worried about getting lawsuits for previous injuries , if the link is ever proved about dementia . Meantime , kids in UK suffer .

Glad you guys in the states are taking kids health and safety seriously .

When Jake played I helped coach, I would line the kids up, and toss high balls to them.  No heading.  Try and get control of the ball.  I don't think we ever practiced heading.

That's cool OJ ^.... Is coaching regulated? Because, you were a good coach. But are some kids ending up with coaches who are nutters, and just put kids through dangerous exercise drills? It would be great if coaching was standardised.... Or maybe it is, I don't know.

Not long to go now before the FIFA World Cup begins in Russia on the 14 th of June  <:-)

Ireland got knocked out by Denmark in the qualifiers  :-\  England have qualified , and are in group G with Tunisia , Panama and Belgium . We play Tunisia first on the 18 th June :) I think England and Belgium are going to win the group and get through to the next round ....ENGLAND ! ENGLAND ! ENGLAND !   :D We've got Gareth Southgate as coach ,he played for Aston Villa , and a former player for England as well . I wasn't to sure about that selection at first , but he's proving me wrong and so far seems to be doing a good job of coaching the England side .

His latest decisions on the England line up , also his take on the tensions between Russia and England right now .

So how far can England get in the World Cup this time ? I guess we're about to find out very soon ! I've certainly sat through some heartbreakers  :'(

I'll never forget the penalty shoot out that took us out of the 1990 World Cup against what was west Germany at the time ...old rivals . Paul Gascoigne cried on the pitch , which kind of summed up the feeling of the nation at the time .

This was the World Cup song for England at Italia '90 . It brings it all back ...Pearce missing the penalty , Chris waddle kicking the ball over the net ...Gazza having a breakdown on the pitch ! It's still a cool song though , because it sums up the optimism everyone felt at the time . We had a really good side , the World Cup was in our grasp ....until our nemesis came along ,PENALTY SHOOT OUT ! :pullhair: Anyway ,this is the song . New Order ...world in motion. "We're playing for England ..EN-GER-LAND !!!!

I think Iran are going to be an interesting team to watch during the world Cup. They've won all of their qualifying matches in Asia to get to the tournament. They've got a manager from Portugal who's helped the team to get to a better standard. And the team are hungry for success! I think that combined with their ability to play well are going to make them a team to watch out for.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42222278

They are in group B with, Morocco, Portugal and Spain. No pressure there then!  :o Portugal and Spain are typically the two that I would pick to win that group. But can Iran cause an upset?
