2012 Readers' Choice Game of the Year Nominations
« on: December 13, 2012, 03:09:11 PM »
As the end of the year approaches, I'd like to ask you guys for nominations for Game of the Year.

This is NOT the voting phase, only the nomination phase. We'll open a poll after the year ends to allow for voting.

For now, we're soliciting (stop snickering - I heard that Star) nominations for games that you believe qualify for being voted as possibly the best of the year. Feel free to nominate more than one if you deem them worthy.

I do not believe we need to nominate the entire universe of games. Some games, while good, will not need to be included. We're looking for your thoughts on the best of the best.

This is the Tabletop Gaming forum so if there's enough interest in handheld or console titles we'll host voting on those platforms, though I expect the bulk of nominations will likely be in the PC gaming field.

The categories may be subject to change as nominations come in. We reserve the right to break out or collapse categories depending on how robust the field is this year, however you're welcome to suggest the category you believe your nomination(s) should be considered for.

Keep in mind that many games these days are hybrids of genres. Xcom, for instance, is both a strategy game and a tactical game. I'm leaning toward calling it a strategy game, but if there is enough support for a different category, we'll take that into consideration. This is, after all, Readers' choice, not Editors' Choice :)

Starting categories are:

  • Strategy Wargame
  • Tactical Wargame
  • General Strategy Game
  • General Tactical Game
  • Role-Playing
  • Historical Minis
  • Fantasy Minis
  • Sci-fi Minis

I realize that the minis categories might be vague. Depending on the nominations we may want to break out nominations for best minis rules versus best minis sculpts, for instance.

And with that, let's let the nominations begin.

I haven't picked up that many 'new' items this year.  The only one I can personally nominate would be Bolt Action from Warlord Games.

Strategic Wargame - Thunderbolt/Apache Leader  (I think that would fit here??)
Tactical Wargame - Nuklear Winter '68
General Tactical Game -  Last Night on Earth : Timber Peak (technically it fits...sorta...)
Role-Playing - Savage Worlds : Deadlands Reloaded  NEVER MIND, that's from 2010. Uhhhh...I think the only relevant answer I have here is D&D Next.
Historical Minis - Sergeants Miniatures Game

For board gaming, I would suggest a few more categories :

Reprint - Wiz War
Expansion - King of Tokyo : Power Up

Maybe something for Economic Game if there are enough entries?

And a few just for me :

Holy Crap Is This Box Heavy Now - Railways of the World with the original Eastern US board and cards, plus the Western US, Europe and England & Wales boards and cards.
This Is a Storage 'Solution'??? - Arkham Horror with Innsmouth & Dunwich Horror (boards, rulebooks and player aids in box with Plano box filled with dice and regular use tokens. Big Plano box outside the box containing all the card decks. Big baggie outside box containing all the Investigator and Ancient One cards).

A starting point: BGG search of "Wargame" subdomain, with "year published" set to 2012
it's not everything (missing all of Decision's releases, S&T and Battles! mags, etc), but it's a decent starting point

Strategy Wargame - Andean Abyss , Bomber Command, Next War Korea, Red Dragon Green Crescent
Tactical Wargame - W@W: Into the Breach, Congo Merc, Cactus Air Force
General Strategy Game - Virgin Queen, Rex Final Days of a Empire
General Tactical Game - 1812 Invasion of Canada
Role-Playing - I got nothing to nominate this year, but I also haven't had a chance to dig into First Fable enough yet
Historical Minis - Samurai Battles,
Fantasy Minis - Freeblades series, Dungeon Command
Sci-fi Minis - Dust Warfare
The key to surviving this site is to not say something which ends up as someone's tag line - Steelgrave
