It's 92 F at Reagan airport right now at 5:30 pm, and peaked at 95 F. My wife is a kindergarten teacher and worked all day without air conditioning because it is broken, like it has been all spring, and like it is every year in the spring. Oh well, school's out in two weeks, so they'll probably fix it just in time for summer break.

Get a giant slurpee and pour it down your shorts.
I did a mountain bike race on a blazing hot hazy humid day one summer. After I finished, I went over to the registration table where there was a big ice chest, grabbed a handful of ice, and dropped it in my shorts. Ahhhhhh. :smitten: The lady working at the registration table looked at me funny, but I didn't care.
Did you steam much?
...did she steam much?
Had to drive to Wisconsin today, when I got to Chicago, it was 94-97F, and then my AC in the car decided to quite working. :tickedoff:

Wow, we got done with school before Memorial Day. Most of the school has no A/C, the third floor gets well into the 90's at times.

AC's been out in my car for a few weeks. I think it just needs a recharge. When it's just me commuting to work it's no biggee - back windows + sunroof = nice breeze for the 30-minute drive. But 8 hours to Ohio w/ kids in the car? Got a little warm...
Nice and cool here in Fla. It's called, 'Thunderstorms'. Steady in the 80's all afternoon with a gentle westerly breeze and overcast. Nice napping weather.

In my case, that's "any change in the weather". Has the sun come out? Time to nap. Is it starting to rain? Time to nap. Is it getting cold? Time to nap. Tornadoes on the way? Time to nap (maybe I can sleep through it).
I like to joke that this is because I was partially raised by cats. Which also explains a number of other quirky habits.
Not really.

I thought Tom was Gisele's Ugg. If not, I volunteer.
Official high temperature at Dulles today was 91F, and the humidity was up there.
For father's day, I shot some sporting clays with my daughters, then we met my my wife for a picnic at a winery. Two hours of walking around and shooting left me pretty sweaty, and another two hours outside at the picnic was more of the same, but at least we had a little bit of shade for that. Other than the heat, it was a great way to spend a day with my family.

Back in 2000 while I was living in Denver, there was a two week stretch when it was above 100 every day. Several days were 110 or above. Doesn't matter if it's dry or moist when it's that hot. It just sucks.

The hottest I've ever been was in 2010 when we did a field test in El Centro CA. If we had done it in March, or November, it might have been pleasant, but instead, we were there in August.
El Centro is sometimes the hottest place in the country, and I while I was there they set a record high for the date. Lucky me.

We were there for about 10 (long) days. Each day we left the hotel at 0800 (when it was usually 90 F), and arrived at the test site at 0900. Some days we were finished by 1800, but a couple of days we stayed until near midnight. When we were at the test site, there wasn't a bit of shade, except for our pop-up tents or our SUV. This was my office:

That reminds me of the trip I took to California 20 years ago. It was August and in San Francisco it was 55 degrees. We drove to Sacramento and got out of the car, and it was ~110.
The difference in temperature is like that between southern Arizona and northern Arizona.

Did you move out to Denver willingly or did you wake up there one day sporting a mysterious new tattoo?
I was in Denver in April 2000 for training with United Airlines. It was nice and cool at the time so it was tolerable. No weed or hippies detected.

I got there in mid-April 2000. Day I landed it was in the 40s and it just snowed. Next day it was 75-80.
Denver was fun. I lived there for a while and didn't work for most of it. Lots of drinking and screwing around. Not sure why I left.
I liked it mainly because I was able to get away, which I never could do at that time, and also because the airline was training me for a job that I could do indoors in the summer. :)

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. There was an excellent chart from several years ago, limning all the official tornado tracks and strengths in the United States (and Canada and Mexico where those were near the border), since records started being kept, and every state had a lot more than I was expecting. Hey OJsDad - you guys OK w/ all the high waters there?
Thanks for asking Brant. All's well here at the house. We ended up with over 3.3" yesterday morning, from between 1-5. The sump pump died about 5:30. We're up on high ground, so it wasn't a major issue, but I did get into Menards and got a new one at 7. Dodged and drove through a lot of water on the roads. It was worse when I came back home. Lot of other people at Menards getting sump pumps and cleaning supplies, so we could of been in a lot worse shape.
Findlay got flooded again. Amazing what happens when you build at the bottom of a hole. Now we'll have to listen to how they want to spend over $100m of our money to fix it.
Big thanks Toledo weathermen. The two we watched the night before said we were going to get .5-1 inch later in the day on Thursday and weren't supposed to get anything over night.

The Cape Fear river runs from Wilmington up thru the Sand Hills, which is where Fayetteville is. Wilmington is actually on the river, not on the coast (that's Wrightsville Beach).
Dunn is just down the road on the Interstate.

It has been a beautiful summer here too, with a nice amount of unusually cool days. Felt like early autumn all weekend. Which may not translate well in early November.
This past weekend was perfect summer weather. Warm, but not hot, days with low humidity. Cool nights that made for comfortable sleeping.
TS Emily is shitting all over my Monday. Oh well, nothing to do but play games. :hide:

Same here in West TN. Last week was pretty brutal with heat index just under 120 (from high 90s, not 100 degree weather), but this week we aren't expected to crack 90, and mostly we've been in the low 80s. Feels like autumn early. No complaints from me.

Got plenty of that here. It's fun watching the puppy and kitten chase bugs at night.
Hot as hell up here on the left coast of Canuckistan and fires are burning all over the province. Weird as it was an unusually snowy winter and wet and cool spring.
My dog likes to chase and eat bugs too. He's useful like that.
Feels like mid/late September today. Low 70s, air is dry, strong breeze. Very comfortable after the past week or so of ungodly humidity.
Same here in Nebraska. It can stay this way for the rest of August as far as I'm concerned. O0
Same here in the Adirondacks. Someone warn Toonces. Winter...is not far.
We ran the a/c about 3 days a few weeks ago. Since then...it ought to be a lot hotter by now. Not sure when those ungodly humid days occurred in Maine, but it's been smooth sailing in Newport.
Not real stoked coming home chilled after surfing yesterday...in a wetsuit...in August... :knuppel2:
<sigh>
One more winter...hopefully... O:-)
I seem to remember last year it got really uncomfortably hot here for about two solid weeks around late July. It just hasn't gotten like that this year, other than just a handful of days. And that was mostly because the winds died down. As long as we have a good sea breeze, it just doesn't get that hot. I'm not necessarily complaining, but I like my summers a bit more on the toastily uncomfortable side. I'm not looking for fall weather this time of year.
Pray it is a mild winter.

This has been an unusual summer season here in the Northeast.
The past five or six days in DC have been very pleasant. It almost feels like October instead of the hazy hot humid dog days of August.

Pray it is a mild winter.
I've been doing that since last September. I throw it in at the end as a substitute for, "in Jesus' name."
"...and please God, let it be a wild winter. Amen."
Do that every single day.
Say five 'Mild Winters' every time you have an impure thought. Say ten if you touch yourself as well.
Damn. That's all he'll do.
Jake's praying for snow. Lots and lots of snow. And when that day ends, he wants more. 6-8 day every day all winter long would make him happy. Just he can run that tractor and snowblower.
Snow is something to enjoy as a kid. Before you have to move it or drive in it.
Or walk the dog in it.
Granted, my dog grew up in Hawaii but damn. When he can't actually smell the grass, it is just PAINFUL to get him to pee and poo. I mean, more painful than a soldier going through an advanced training school eating MREs for two weeks. :o
We had a layer of ice on top of 5 inches of snow one time. I had to break through it so the dog could get a grip to take a dump. Otherwise he just slid when he tried.
Maybe all dogs are not like mine, but mine is super-territorial and will only pee if he can smell his spot. So we walk in the snow and he just sniffs and then looks around with this bewildered look on his face like WTF?
And he shivers uncontrollably the whole time, but won't speed things up. It truly doesn't matter how appalling the weather is; he will measure his pee out for the entire walk and if you shortchange him he unloads the excess on the carpet when nobody is looking.
I'm not sure if it comes through, but I am not a dog person. I have the number to the pound on speed dial on my phone. If I was certain my wife wouldn't divorce me, he'd already be gone. Yeah, I said that.
You and your dog seem to be on par for dealing with New England Winters.
I'm dropping him off when I visit Maine. Hope you like the sound of furious barking every time a pickup truck drives by.
We have ways of dealing with that in Maine. Just tell the kids he's at the 'Daisy Hill Puppy Farm'.

Maybe you shouldn't have all those pix of Hawaii on the wall of the same room you get drunk in. It can only end in sadness.
Switch 'em out for some groggy snaps like maps and biplanes. Or if need be, giant watches.
And put a window or skylight in, damn.
There's a window on the left, you just can't see anything out of it. Probably because of all the snow, ice, and frozen bodies outside. I donno, looks pretty good to me.... rum, glass with ice as well as coffee mug, warm shoes, hot weather girl on TV, and, very important, a desk that's just the right height to prop your feet up on comfortably. Only thing I would add is a phone within reach cause just when you get comfortable.... I am wondering why no pics of all the Grogs-Brothers around? Feeling... kind of.... hurt right now. :-[

Alert the Commander!!
School starts tomorrow. Temps are going to climb out of the 70's and get into the upper 80's for the start. Always fun times on the third floor with no AC.
I remember a time in West TN when August was The Worst: popcorn thunderstorms every day, heat in the low 100s, heat index in the 120s, just hideous. Naturally this was when I was in high school, so we always got a week of band camp outside in that mess. No doubt the football team had it much worse.
I would be surprised if the average daytime temp for all daylight hours this August is above 83. Lottttsssss of 70 degree weather. In August. The work crew have been joking about it being autumn already; it dang well SMELLS like autumn outside. West Tennessee being the Home of All Allergies, the plants have gotten into autumn spawning gear.
We had exactly one week of high 90s this year. One. The pattern has been steadily going that way for the past 10 years I think.
Not that I'm complaining. Change makes me suspicious, that's all. Even when the change is favorable.
heat index over 100 again here today
feels like walking thru soup just to get to the parking lot
Same here. I went outside to fry an egg on the sidewalk and instead it just evaporated. :o
Last few days have been nice here. Warm but not oppressively so with cool evenings. A few of the trees are starting to show some color.
We need rain badly. Portland is down about 5 inches of rain for the summer and we had a very wet spring. There's been plenty of rain inland, but it hasn't been making it to the coast much.
high 90s here with a heat index of Cuban.

In about 6 months you'll be complaining that the highs are only in the 60's while for some of us it'll the high will be 20.
In DC, our July was one of the top 10 wettest Julys, and August is already at our average rainfall. My lawn is a nice green, whereas normally this time of year it's normally dormant and without much color.
This summer I've been walking around a lot outside. Our summer has been almost perfectly average, but average right now is about 89F with high humidity. A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a meeting in a building that I had not yet been to. I walked right by the building (couldn't see an address on the building) and walked for another block or two before I realized my mistake and doubled back. That's not fun in the middle of the day wearing a suit, and I was pretty damp by the time I entered the full room and wedged myself into the only available seat.
I'm surprised Trump hasn't claimed credit for making DC wet again.
He didn't have anything to grab it by.
Some trees are starting to turn here too which is really, really early...dogwood trees and black walnut, etc. Been on the cool side for weeks. I am nervous for The Commander.
Why is there a scotch shortage.
There's what now?!!!
Clearly The Commander has read the Farmer's Almanac and looked out his window, not liking what he's seen in either.
He can read :nerd:
Allegedly.
We should get him an 'Emergency Survival Kit' together. I'll throw-in a roll of toilet paper and a tube of toothpaste. He does have teeth right?

I appreciate the thought, but no offense...that's a really lame survival kit.
The SouthEast has gotten a lot of rain and it has not been that hot. I drove from Alabama to Asheville, NC. Then through East Tennessee to SouthWestern Virginia. Everything is much greener than normal. Been a hell of a year for corn.
I don't think we had a single day in the 100s in Auburn. Very few days in the upper 90s. Been a pretty pleasant, though muggy summer.
Getting down to the 50s tonight in Galax. Unfortunately, must return to Alabama on Friday.
In Syracuse, NY again for the New York State Fair...50 degrees tonight! 😎
Weather here is supposed to be just about perfect for the next 4-5 days. Highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s.
55 this morning. Left all the windows open overnight. Feels like fall.
We're getting low 60's tonight. The window over my bed will be open. Awesome sleeping weather O0
I noticed yesterday that there are leaves all over my front lawn.
Isn't a bit early for that?
I'm dreaming of a white Halloween.
Look, I'm not investment guru, but if I was y'all, I'd seriously consider buying up some stock in Johnnie Walker. I have a sneaky suspicion they're going to see an uptick in sales this year, particularly right around the first snowfall in Rhode Island.

It's been a surprisingly mild August so far -- highs have been mostly in the 70's, lower 80's at worst. I've been able to wear my jeans (as opposed to shorts) for the last four days now, which has been a nice change. The only downside (if you can call it that) is that it's rained practically every other day this summer, but I'm not complaining if it means we get cooler temperatures in exchange.

"Invest 92" Is shitting all over my weekend. I got 5 inches of rain last night from dark to about mid-night and more on the way. What did that damned eclipse do to us anyway? :hide:
No one wants a white Halloween. In 2011 we got a foot of snow here on Halloween and with some leaves on some of the trees, it looked like a WWI battlefield. We didn't have power for two weeks. Everyone remembers superstorm Sandy and tropical storm Irene, but almost no one remembers the white Halloween. That storm really fucked us up.
All that said it's going to be in the 40s here tonight (and it was last night) and looks like we have cool weather for the next 7-10 days. Fall arrived early maybe? I fear for the Commander's sanity.
I was on my bicycle in the Virginia countryside at 0730 this morning. Almost felt chilly at the start, even though it's still August. It was a nice day for a ride, so I'm not complaining.
46 degrees overnight here in Orange County NY.

Saw him last summer with Peter Gabriel. It was a really good show. Really hope you enjoy. Have you ever seen him before?
Yeah I saw him two years ago touring with (I think) the London Philharmonic. Last night's show was way better. My only issue is that he did not sing Don't Stand So Close to Me or Fortress Around Your Heart...two of my favorites. He did almost all the rest of his Police and solo songs though. He also looks 35 still.
I saw him on The Soul Cages tour in '91. He was awesome. Glad you enjoyed the show! \m/ \m/

Do they still work after 20 years?
One of my older cousins (on my Mom's side), and lots of my Dad's family, live in central Florida. For most of them, including the cousin, even Cat5 hurricanes won't be a new thing -- but my cousin's little daughter will be there at ground zero this time. Mom wants them to fly her out while there's still time, even if the parents insist on staying, but my cousin won't agree to it, even if we send someone here down to fetch her. :-\
Like I said, much of half of my family comes from Florida, so I get the hurricane defiance thing, sort of. I don't like it and wouldn't do it myself (probably), but I get it. But this is a little girl. :pullhair:
It makes no sense to take that kind of chance when you have little kids. Hopefully your cousin comes around and soon.

Why do you people in the Northeast keep all the cold water for yourselves? Can't you send a little down this way to mix with our warm water and make our hurricanes room temperature at least?

Sept. 24 and it's 29C (84F) here. Normal this time of year is 17C. Come on AGW. \m/
86 F here - it's like August and September reversed themselves.
88 F at Washington Dulles airport.
84 here.
It's 8:20 pm on Sept. 24 and it's still 28C outside. My wife and I are slowly getting pissed drinking ice cold wine. :bd:

I do so enjoy these late September 90 degree days.
High of 89 today. When i get home friday it'll be high of 71
End of the week is going to be seasonable here - low/mid 60s.
I don't mind when it's 90 F, even in late September.
I don't mind walking almost a mile to my meeting.
I (mostly) don't mind wearing a suit, including jacket and tie.
But I don't like all three of these at once.
ETA: Mens clothing is stupid. A suit jacket adds very little warmth in the winter, but is very warm in the summer. And what's up with ties? It's just a piece of flair that chokes us.
You can tell it's Autumn here in Fla. The temps in the 80's all day instead of 90's. Where did I leave my long pants back in March?

No Oj's, my balls are bigger.
I sat in the sun for 3 quarters of the football game in Chapel Hill in the high 80s last Saturday. Of course next week the highs are forecasted for the 60s.
First day all week that it wasn't into the 80s with god awful humidity. Going to drop into the 40s tonight. Finally feels like Fall.
39 degrees here this Saturday night 🤔
High 50's in the higher elevations for the next three nights. SLEEPING WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN!!!

20-25 degrees cooler here than a week ago. We're back to needing rain badly with very little forecast for the next 10 days.
In my little corner of Southern New England it was a balmy 43º this AM. Should be sunny mid-60's by afternoon and rain later in the week.
Some of the leaves are already coming down though...

When I started my ride in Middleburg VA this morning, it was in the upper 30s. That was a bit of a shock.
Once I warmed up, it was a fantastically beautiful Fall morning in the Virginia countryside. Green fields, rolled hay, blue skies, fresh air, and even some goats.
Weather has been splendiferous (though not quite deciduous yet) in West TN: mostly clear, a spate of highs in the high 80s a week or two ago, but dropped into the high 70s mid 80s. Crisp in the mornings.
I love autumn. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Ahh crap. I was supposed to go on a three-day biking trip starting Monday. It's been bone dry here for the last month, but the day I'm supposed to start my ride, the remnants of this storm will reach us and rain for several days.
Any storm named, "Nate" has got to be too damned lazy to work itself into anything really troublesome. Now if it was a "Nathaniel" that'd be different. And more respectable. I think "Nate" will just hit New Orleans, eat some Creole, get drunk, fart a couple of times, then lay down and sleep it off.

I spread the other day and mirth demanded I stop.
Ain't nobody want to see a 355-pound man (black, white, pink, polka-dotted, whatever) spread anything. I mean, what YOU do in the privacy of YOUR office cubicle...

But here we are, at 89.
We're going to get back into the mid 70s this week which is damn unusual for the 2nd week of October.

Nate was mostly gone by the time I started my ride on Monday mornng, so only a little bit of rain but plenty of mud puddles to dodge. Both days have been pretty warm (89 and 87 F) and super humid - not what I was expecting when I planned this for October. Tomorrow is supposed to be cool and rainy.

Now
that's what I'm talkin' about!
Take heart, Commander. You had pretty much the worst weather in New England today.
Yeah, it wasn't very nice. I actually got all the way into my little garage gym thingy and was about to start working out. But I really didn't want to, and I haven't been surfing in like two weeks, and it actually looked fun on the cams despite the weather. So I sucked it up.
It actually was mildly fun, certainly worth driving over to Newport for, but just so damn gray. Everything just shades of miserable gray.
Anyway, I got two hours of little waves all to myself, and it's usually nice to just get in the water, so I'll call it a minor win.
Victory can be measured many ways.
Quite.
Doesn't surfing count as a workout?
It does when you wear Uggs.
Hauling all that Ghey around must be quite a stresser.
I'm not sure if it counts, but I counted it.
I always thought surfing was a great workout like swimming. No?
It can be, it just depends. On a day like today where the waves are small, the ocean is glassy, and there's not much current, you're not doing all that much work in between waves. It's a short paddle to the lineup, and then you're mostly just sitting waiting for waves to come. A brief flurry of paddling, ride the wave, and then a short paddle back out. It's not a very vigorous workout.
On the other hand, during a big swell like with the hurricanes, or some of those outside reef breaks in Hawaii, it can be absolutely exhausting. Everything is hard. Getting out to the waves can be just brutal, a test of paddling, timing, ducking under waves, furious paddling to get outside before another set comes in...then you get caught too far in on a set, and have to duck under multiple waves, getting pushed underwater and all over the place, and then when the set lets up, desperately trying to get back out before the next set.
You get a good wave and cover some serious ground, and then you've got to cover that ground back to where you started by paddling.
The whole experience can really take its toll. I've had 3 or 4 hour sessions in good, big surf, and when I get home I am absolutely worthless the rest of the day I'm so tired. So it just depends. That break I used to surf on the south shore in Hawaii was a mile and a half just to get to the waves. That's 3 miles of paddling before you even catch a wave. That was most definitely a workout.
Keep on keepin' on, Sir.

The weather is a complete mess ...
Ophelia hits Ireland and is causing casualties while we, some 800 km away, are having the warmest october days since ever (15° above normal or what is normal for july).
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-41627442
A woman in her 20s has been killed as the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia hit the British Isles.
Part of a tree fell on her car in West Waterford, also injuring another passenger, as hurricane-force gusts battered the Republic of Ireland.
About 120,000 homes are without power in the Irish Republic, where the government has deployed the army.
The Met Office has warned of "potential danger to life", with wind gusts off the south coast of Ireland reaching 109mph (176km/h) at Fastnet Rock.

Christmas decorations in December in shorts is just plain wrong.
Rode my bike to work today. 45 F when I left, which isn't too bad, but I forgot how to dress for that temperature and couldn't find my winter clothes, so I had a chilly ride in. No complaints though -- this is a nice time of year.

Today was a splendid fall day in DC. Blue skies, some color in the leaves, cool in the morning but 76 F at 3pm. I went for a bike ride in the woods this afternoon and it was superb.
Close to 70 today in Portland. Mid to Upper 60s all weekend. Been an incredibly mild October. Set to be the warmest on record here.
