OTOH, if any illegal savage vessels are spotted the allied naval forces in the area could always benefit from more live-fire exercises.

There's a collection of oral histories at the Washington Navy Yard.  About ten years ago, two compilations were put into book form.
One account was by a young sailor on one of Lexington's escorts.
The topside crew was watching the fires and explosions on Lexington in subdued shock.
The kid was surprised when a Water Tender Chief suddenly came on deck from the Fire Rooms.  (Probably breaking protocal by opening watertight doors)
This was the toughest, most hardcore chief on the ship.  When he said jump, you jumped, and no one dared to give him any lip on anything.  Think of the sergeants in prewar Honolulu in From Here to Eternity.
Then the kid was shocked to see tears streaming down his face.
"Chief, you're crying.  Why are you crying?"
"The old Lex is going down, son."
