Title: oh oh...I just can't stop myself
Post by: JudgeDredd on October 10, 2017, 12:41:27 PM
I've always wanted a Vulcan bomber. I've been waiting to see if anyone was making a new tooling, and then saw this in the local model shop today for £40.

It was between that and the Academy 1/48 scale Phantom Wild Weasel. The Phantom almost got the buy because it was nice and big and only £23...but I WANTED an Avro Vulcan!!

Didn't they just "retire" the last remaining Vulcan? Thought I saw something on TV (hell, maybe here) that was showing her last flight?

I think we have one of the few Vulcans on display in the US. I actually saw one fly at an airshow here in Omaha in the 70s.

https://sacmuseum.org/what-to-see/aircraft/avro-hawker-vulcan/

That should be a sweet model. Keep us posted.

Vulcans used to fly almost daily over my house in Goose Bay Labrador in the 70's. The base there was used for low level training... being much like the terrain in northern Europe and Russia....

Wish my LHS had a better selection of armor. He has planes coming out of his ass, but not enough armor.

Hate buying online but if the selection isn't at the shop, my wallet wants what it wants (and it's a damn near 20 minute drive....GAWD, I'm a lazy bastich)

Unfortunately, a "dry fit" has shown this is going to be a challenging build. It's not snapping together where it should, kind of looking like it's warped in places.

It'll take alot of TLC I think.

I know  :'(  But there wasn't another 1/72 kit out there.

I've been waiting and waiting for a new mould to be made - Airfix is going through it's catalogue and remoulding some kits - I had hoped I would find this being announce (they've just done the Victor)

I couldn't wait any longer...I'll just have to master my filling and modelling skills.  :buck2:

It's started

This thing is needing a huge amount of work. I think there's more plastic on the flash than there is actually moulded for the model. Also, the filler and sanding it's going to need.

This better be worth it!

So I started working on this again. Unfortunately, the nose weight came loose and so I had to stick a load of UPVC down the cockpit through to the nose.

Anyway - that's drying (so far, 12 hours and still drying) so all I've managed to do is the undercarriage.

This is proving to be every bit as difficult as I had originally thought. Worse, it's showing my lack of filling skills.

But - I want this done and on the shelf.

Currently, though you can't see it in the photos, it's white from Tamiya aerosol white primer and I'm not looking forward to painting it Dark Sea Grey and Dark Green because this beast used almost a whole tin of Tamiya White Primer!

The underneath section, bomb bay was an absolute disaster. It only connects at the 4 corners by a very small section and so was loose along the edges...this was made worse by the fact that it was warped (badly) and too small, leaving quite a gap all the way round which needed filling. But the filling wasn't good enough to deal with the warping unfortunately.

The sooner they remould this model, the better

Thanks for the tip.

It's not something I've ever had to deal with...in all other models I've built, I've never seen this. It's an old Airfix kit - it has to go down to that.

I think I'll make sure I buy more modern, less cheap kits in future to prevent having to do more work than should be necessary. I don't mind a bit of filling...but bending moulds back into shape is a step too far for me.

Damn. I just cannot nail spray painting.

This was always going to be a challenge anyway, but the sheer size was always going to make it more daunting to me.

For one, I simply cannot get the paint/thinner mix right. I had to turn the PSI to 30-40 to blast the paint out. Then when I thinned the next cup, it started spidering...too thin. So final cup I thickened and had to up the pressure again.

Result is patchy paint layer and ALOT of paint "dust" which I brushed off which kind of worsened what was already a bad paint job!!

Here's the result. I just don't get it. Worse...once I've made a model, I end up fretting the whole time about painting, putting it off and then eventually getting all the paint kit out and screwing up up...making me even more sceptical next time!

It gets me down man. I love making these, but painting just freaks me the **** out.

Thanks.

As you can tell, I'm not overjoyed with my airbrushing. I just stress so much about it.

It doesn't look tooooo bad...Hopefully weathering will cover some of the scars.

nice work, JD. A clear coat may help. The Vulcans always seemed to have a glossy finish.

To do

I've free-handed camo'd before but with a normal brush. With an airbrush, it's pretty difficult (even taking out the issues I had with thinning)

It really doesn't look bad from the pics.

youre holding the airbrush way to close and the paint isnt thinned enough.
also, to maintain the finish between coats rub the model down with a jersey cloth rag.

O0

I was having a mare. I had to push the pressure way up so paint would come up - once it's in the cup you're kind of screwed - you can add thinner, but it's already down into the gun. Then I would hold the gun close to try and get the camo lines...but that was turning out terrible because I was holding it so close and blowing paint out at 40psi  :DD

I love making these things - but I stress so much when it comes to painting. I never ever felt that way when I was hand painting. Thing is, the final result of airbrush is (when done right) a considerably better finish so I don't really want to sack it...but my old Humbrol enamel paints are calling me

I've just found out the thinner I'm using (UMP Thinner) is meant to be 50/50 mix with Tamiya paint  :pullhair:

Only in the sense that I wasn't mixing it anywhere near that. At most, I was mixing it about 20%

Honestly I find it so stressful to paint now I think I'd give myself a heart attack. If it turned out as bad, I'd be proper gutted. I'm still holding out on the other klear coats, decals and weathering to make it good

So Klear and decals decals

Just the wheels and weathering to do and I can put this one on the shelf.

Well - actually, I think I want to paint the rear engine nozzles.

A few things that are wrong and can't be fixed

I am quite pleased with it considering the nightmare I had painting it. I've got to be honest, though...the Vulcan is so beautiful, it's hard to make it look bad.  :buck2:

I decided I wanted to paint those engine nozzles...so masking and hoping

And done...yaaaay

And then a dark dirt wash
This is always a scary moment. You've invested alot of time and anguish into building your model and painting it - then you're going to do WHAT?

Followed by a cement wash

Power...power...power...WAVE OFF

lol

I'm thinking whatever first model I get should be a 1/35 or 1/48, but also that I might go look at Michael's just to see what they have. They used to have a huge selection, a whole row, and I think they still have several but I don't know. I remember a lot of model boxes being opened, missing shrink, and in various stages of abuse from stupid customers.
